Digital news outlets are in for a reckoning
GREAT expectations attended digital journalism outfits. Firms such as BuzzFeed and Mashable were the hip kids destined to conquer the internet with their younger, advertiser-friendly audience, smart manipulation of social media and affinity for technology. They seemed able to generate massive web traffic and, with it, ad revenues. They saw the promise of video, predicting that advertising dollars spent on television would migrate online. Their investors, including Comcast, Disney and General Atlantic, an investment firm, saw the same, pouring hundreds of millions of dollars each into Vice Media, BuzzFeed and Vox (giving them valuations of $5.7bn, $1.7bn and over $1bn, respectively).
They have had successes. Some became ninjas in “SEO” long before most print journalists knew it stood for “search engine optimisation”. They introduced “clickbait” to the lexicon. Some, like BuzzFeed and Vice, worked out that fortunes were to be made in brand-supported viral hits—or “native advertising” that looks similar to the sites’ own snazzy editorial content. They gave the internet “listicles” like BuzzFeed’s “19 Mindblowing Historical Doppelgangers” (sponsored by Virgin Mobile) and uplifting stories, like those from Upworthy, where “you won’t believe what happened next”.
Receive our Daily Dispatch and Editors’ Picks newsletters.
But a brutal winter is setting in. BuzzFeed will probably miss its revenue target, of $350m this year, by 15-20%, and is to lay off 100 of its 1,700 staff. Vice is also expected to fall short of its revenue target, of $800m. Mashable, a once-trendy site valued in 2016 at $250m, in November agreed to be sold for $50m to Ziff Davis, a print-turned-digital publisher. Other news sites are up for sale, cutting their staff or closing shop, sending ink-free scribes in search of work. Digital media are, in other words, enduring similar woes to their print peers. “There was this hype bubble that convinced everybody that these digitally native companies are different but they are not,” says an executive at one such previously overvalued firm. “People need to readjust their expectations.”
The natives have run into much the same problem as print newspapers have encountered: the duopoly of Alphabet (owner of Google and YouTube) and Facebook. The tech giants rule digital advertising in two ways. First, by dominating the business of selling and servicing ads, they take a healthy cut of those sold by publishers themselves. Second, they get advertisers to bypass publishers and spend directly on their platforms. Such is the demand that AdStage reckons ad prices on Facebook nearly tripled in only eight months this year, to $11.17 per 1,000 impressions. That is still a lot cheaper than native advertising—the bespoke ads made by firms such as BuzzFeed and Vice. Google’s and Facebook’s tools for targeting users strike advertisers as a more efficient, scalable way to reach specific audiences.
The duopoly are expected to get a majority of digital ad sales in America this year, and almost all of the growth. The media firms that supply Google and Facebook’s users with content are mere “vassals”, including digital news sites, says one executive. Digital publishers often act as such, attuning their strategies to the platforms in the chase for clicks. After Facebook prioritised video content last year, so many sites made a “pivot to video” that it became an industry joke. It has not worked out well, as short videos are difficult to make and monetise at volume.
Publishers would be wiser to get users to stay on their own sites, so that they can profit from the relationship. Some are trying to do so with their journalism. Gizmodo Media Group, a group of tech and culture sites, has an investigative team. Vox makes in-depth explainer videos on current events. BuzzFeed regularly breaks big stories. The site holds its audience: the “bounce rate” of BuzzFeed’s visitors—the share that leave after visiting one page—is 34%, which compares pretty well with 54% for the New York Times (the numbers come from SimilarWeb, an analytics firm).
Advertising still provides the bulk of revenue. But publishers are also selling things to visitors, both their own merchandise and other companies’ products, on which they take a cut. The Gizmodo sites (owned by Univision) get about one-quarter of their revenue from e-commerce; BuzzFeed has started doing the same. Membership fees may be another option.
Smaller digital operations are also using a variety of strategies. The Ringer, a sports and culture site in Los Angeles, has established a niche in podcasts, on which it generates millions in sponsorship. The Information, in San Francisco, has more than 10,000 subscribers paying $399 a year for its technology news. At VTDigger, a non-profit site started by a laid-off journalist, dogged coverage of politics and corruption in Vermont has attracted strong readership and a mix of donations, grants and sponsorships from local businesses. There are several clear paths to long-term survival, but not to billion-dollar valuations. Expectations have indeed been readjusted.

How To Find a House Sitting Job & Get Hired Today!
2 days, everyone and their dog (literally) wants to find a house sitting job or find a sitter for their house. House sitting is one of the best ways to enjoy free luxury accommodation all around the world, but finding a house sitting job definitely isn’t easy. We’ve personally found a house sitting job on the beach in Grenada, near sugar plantations in Barbados and in the jungles of Costa Rica. Needless to say, we’ve loved each one.
If you’re looking for the perfect house sitting job, you’ll find it within one of the resources I’ll list in this post. From vineyards in France and beach houses in Barbados, to Castles in the UK and farm houses in the United States, there’s a house sitting job for everyone, you just need to know where to look.

We’ve calculated that we’ve saved well over $24,000 in accommodation costs over the years and have been able to live in some luxurious homes all around the world because of house sitting. We’ve done countless interviews with homeowners and have become experts on how to apply for (and get) house sitting jobs.
In this post, I’m going to help you land the perfect house sitting job! It’s a lot easier than you might think.
Where To Find a House Sitting Job
There are three main house sitting websites online, TrustedHouseSitters.com, HouseCarers.com and MindMyHouse.com. Luckily for you, we’ve already done the research and Trusted Housesitters has more house sitting jobs than all of the other major sites combined.
They also have the best house sitter to homeowner ratio by far, with just 1.5 house sitters for every home listed. That gives applicants great odds in finding a house sitting job!
Because all of the above listed sites have a membership fee, we recommend choosing one instead of paying for multiple memberships. Because Trusted Housesitters is the best by a long shot, there’s no real reason to sign up for one of the other sites.
Want a house sitting job now?
Click Here to see the latest listings and sign up for TrustedHousesitters.com as a house sitter today. Readers of this blog, www.GoatsOnTheRoad.com, get a special 10% discount off of all memberships (use code GOAT10 at check-out).
We paid for our membership a few years back and it was one of the best things we ever did! Between all of the different house sitting jobs we’ve landed, we’ve saved well over $24,000 in accommodation costs. That’s not to mention the fact that most homeowners also let you use their car, so you’ll save on transport costs too, and in some cases, you’ll even get paid for your house sitting job.
How To Land Your First House Sitting Job
Finding house sitting jobs is the easy part. There are literally hundreds of them added to the site every day, but actually landing the perfect house sitting job for you is the difficult part. Even though there are only 1.5 house sitters for every home on the website, there is still some competition amongst applicants, especially for house sitting jobs in desirable places like Europe and the Caribbean. Here’s how to ensure you land the job.
Create a Great Profile That Will Help You Get a House Sitting Job
After you’ve signed up for Trusted Housesitters, you’ll have access to the largest network of available house sits anywhere. It’s important that you build a great profile. Make sure to add as many photos as you can and include lots of pictures and videos of you with animals.

Be extremely descriptive in your personal write-up. The Trusted Housesitters website will ask you a few questions as you set up your profile, so just make sure you’re as detailed as possible. Explain your previous experience with animals, why you love them, any previous pet sitting experience you may have and experience with caring for sick or injured animals.
Also be sure to list all of your other skills as well. Homeowners typically like someone who is handy around the house, well-travelled and excited to visit the country where the home is located, so if you know where you want to house sit, make sure to express your interest in that place (or places) within your profile.
Be The First To Apply For The House Sitting Job You Want
After you’ve completed the profile, it’s important that you turn on email notifications on your phone. Every day, Trusted Housesitters will send out an email that lists all of the new jobs available on their website. These emails typically have dozens of new jobs, but we’ve done the research and it’s almost always one of the first 10 applicants who will get the job.
Bonus Tip: If you want the best chances of landing a house sitting job, then be the first one to apply when new listings are added to the website.
To take this a step further, you can actually apply for the jobs before the email even goes out. That means that you can beat out all of the applicants that are waiting for the email to get that house sitting job.
To apply as soon as new sits are available, after you sign up, go to the listings page at TrustedHousesitters.com and keep hitting refresh. As soon as a new house sitting job appears that you want, apply for it!
Applying For a House Sitting Job
Once you find a house sitting job that you want, it’s time to apply. Simply click on the listing and then click “Contact the Owner”. This will bring up a private messaging screen where you can begin a conversation with the homeowner.
We’ve tested it and by far, the #1 best thing you can do to make sure you get the job is to mention the pet… A LOT. Almost all house sitting jobs are actually pet sitting jobs as well, and pet owners want you to care about their pet, more so than their home.
Ask twice as many questions about the animal as you do about the house and show genuine interest in the pet throughout your application.
Nail The House Sitting Job Interview
The next step in landing the house sitting job is the interview. Usually the homeowner will read through a few dozen applications and filter through the results to a select few. If you’re one of those select few, the homeowner will message you and likely request a Skype call.
This is the final step to landing the perfect house sitting job, so you have to do well on the call! Again, the number one most important thing to do is focus on the pet throughout the call, but also listen to the owner, be honest and personable.

Too many house sitters keep selling themselves in the interview. This can come across desperate and it takes away from the real reason of the call, to get to know you. Let the owner ask some questions and tell you about what is expected.
Have a nice conversation with the owner. Make it personal. Ask as many personal questions as you do about the pet and the house sitting job itself, and you’ll get the job. Trust us! We’ve done a lot of these interviews and we’ve talked to countless home owners who all agree, the interview is an important part of the process and the house sitter should be interested in the pet, and getting to know the owner during this call.
You Got The Job!
Once you get a house sitting job somewhere, there’s no better feeling. Knowing that you’ll be staying in a beautiful home, taking care of an adorable pet for weeks or months on end is so rewarding!
The great part of house sitting jobs is that, in our experience, they’re almost always available every year. If you prove to the owner that you’re responsible and care for their house / pet, you will likely be asked to return time and time again.
Make sure you get every host to give you a positive review. Good reviews will help your profile show up higher in the results of house sitters on the website, which in turn helps you to get seen and get offers for new house sitting jobs that are posted every day.
Want to spend every winter on the beach in Mexico, or every summer in mountains of Canada? House sitting is a great way to accomplish your travel dreams, without spending a fortune.
It might sound too good to be true, but it’s not. Before we signed up for Trusted Housesitters, we said to ourselves: “No way you can just add a profile on this site and suddenly get free accommodation all over the world”, but the fact is that it’s easy to do.
Homeowners need house and pet sitters and with thousands of people joining the Trusted Housesitters Community every month, there’s a house sitting job available for everyone.
Remember, Sign Up Now and get 10% off using our special Goats On The Road coupon goat GOATS10. Get that first job and then return to this post, comment below and tell us all about it!

What the new Snapchat update gets right about social media
As a parent, I"m a member of more than a few Facebook Groups related to my children"s education. And damn, they can be irritating. You quickly learn that parents frequently disagree wildly on teaching styles, curriculum choices, and even specific assignments. But at least the discussion is directly related the school or the class.
That wasn"t the case for a recent post in the group, where a fellow parent decided to share an article about raising successful girls in today"s political climate. The parent provided virtually no context other than wanting to share it in response to the recent high-profile sexual harassment allegations against famous men.
The article was valid — I agreed with much of it — but I found the act of sharing it to the private group intrusive. The point of this group (which class parents are all but required to join) is for parents to connect and discuss their children"s class, not for general news or political discussion.
Put more bluntly: I don"t care what you"re reading, and even if I did, this isn"t the place to share it.
I couldn"t help but think of that incident when I read Snap CEO Evan Spiegel"s thinking behind his company"s blanket redesign of Snapchat. With the revamp, the app is more clearly separating your interactions with friends from the things you read: Your snap conversations and your friends" Stories will be on the left, and publisher content (like Mashable"s Discover channel) and public, curated Stories are over on the right.
But it was the philosophy behind the big change that rang very true to me. Spiegel said:
The combination of social and media has yielded incredible business results, but has ultimately undermined our relationships with our friends and our relationships with the media. We believe that the best path forward is disentangling the two by providing a personalized content feed based on what you want to watch, not what your friends post.
Think about all the things you read and are interested in, and then think about how many of those you"re comfortable sharing with your Facebook or Twitter networks. Generally I think that the larger and more public-facing your network becomes, the subset of content you want to share becomes smaller and smaller, to the point where you"re either sharing anodyne stuff like food porn or articles you know your followers already agree with.
While that may be fine for those who want to live in their filter bubbles, sharing habits affect everyone on the network. When consuming media in a place like Facebook (and yes, there are many other social networks, but it"s fair to pick on Facebook since it"s by far the largest influencer), what you see is largely driven by what your friends are sharing.
Which brings me back to my original point: I don"t care what you"re reading. Yet Facebook is constantly shoving it in my face, and thanks in large part to the events of the past year, we"re only just now starting to see that mixing media and social relationships together isn"t necessarily natural or even beneficial (although it"s certainly been lucrative for publishers, including Mashable).
Certainly, AI and algorithms have a role to play here, and might even help fix the problem by reducing friend activity as a driver, but given the maturity of Facebook itself and its business model, it"s hard to see things fundamentally changing. AI and algorithms are terrific at surfacing content you"ll click, share, and generally "engage" with, but is it really the stuff you want to see? That you would have sought out absent a news feed?
That"s why Snapchat"s approach of essentially splitting the "feed" in two is the right way to do content on a social network. It still benefits from algorithms, but they"re put to work finding content that you actually want to see and have expressed interest in — something we probably aren"t doing as much under the scrutiny of our Facebook or Twitter friends. Snapchat also has a curated set of media and real editors, which help insulate it from the worst evils of socially driven content, like false stories going viral.
Even though Snapchat"s new approach is philosophically sound, there are potential pitfalls. Snapchat users will still be able to share individual stories from Discover with their friends on the network, so it"s not like sharing content will be completely absent. Moreover, having two distinct functions in the app strongly suggests that Snapchat should split into two different apps. Of course, then the media section wouldn"t benefit from the app"s highly engaged user base. Discover would be the new Swarm.
And none of this is to say it"s impossible mix media and social correctly. Twitter, as more public-facing medium, is more suited to combining news with real-time commentary from people whose views you care about. And by making "news from your friends" the focus, apps like Nuzzel are a good guide to what your social circle is talking about without the risk of getting pulled into the quicksand of a comments section.
But Spiegel and Co. are onto something here, and it may even help change course away from some of the worst developments that networks have wrought upon us: filter bubbles, fake news, and trolls. Initially, social media companies mixed social chocolate with media peanut butter, and the result was definitely delicious at times. But we were so taken by the recipe that we forgot both are often better on their own.

NEXT VIDS: Eating Brain in Spain Munchies
BARCELONA DAY 2 CITY TOUR
First full day in Barcelona! It starts with the best eggs Benedict for brunch I"ve ever had at Caravelle restaurant. Then we check into an Airbnb , it was $170 per. night with 4 beds. Compared to the hostel dorm beds the night before for $30 per. So if u have 4 people it"s only a bit more to get your own decent apartment with living room.
THEN, FLASHBACK TO AMSTERDAM! Lol. 😝 We hit Remedy coffeeshop / cannabis club / weed shop whatever u wanna call it. U will notice promoters out on La Rambla (main walking street) inviting you to come get weed/cannabis whatever. We google searched the best ones and came up with Remedy, it"s on google maps.
From my understanding they"re "medical" clubs where u have to have a membership. So if you are of age, you can just go in and sign up for a yearly membership for a fee, this one was $20 for a year. Then the buds inside are extra obv, however much u wanna buy, just like a regular dispensary. And you can smoke inside on the couches in the lounge, just like Amsterdam. They even had a gaming room downstairs with PlayStation and Xbox!

Amazon Trumpets Its Cloud Lead With N.F.L. and Other Deals
In a phone interview, Michelle McKenna-Doyle, the N.F.L.’s senior vice president of information technology, called the new game analysis it plans to offer using Amazon “instant quarterbacking,” a nod to Monday morning quarterbacking, the traditional postgame discussions fans often hold. Amazon is also becoming an official technology sponsor of the N.F.L.’s next gen stats, as the league’s initiative is called.
The N.F.L. and Amazon declined to discuss the financial terms of their relationship.
Amazon also announced a handful of other new machine-learning efforts. Customers using A.W.S., as the cloud division within Amazon is often called, will be able to add capabilities that mimic human cognition, such as automatic transcribing of speech to text and analysis of videos. Those services are usually expensive and daunting for many companies to add to their applications
Amazon also said it would begin selling a new camera with machine learning built into it, A.W.S. DeepLens, so software developers can practice with the technology. Amazon said the camera could allow a garage door opener to automatically open when it recognizes a license plate on a car.
A.W.S. started as a curious side project for the internet retailer more than a decade ago. It has since mushroomed into one of the most important technology providers. It brought in over $12 billion in revenue for Amazon during the first nine months of the year, up 42 percent from a year earlier.
More important, A.W.S. generated almost $3 billion in operating income, an enormous benefit to a company which brings in little to no profit from its retail operations.
The chief executive of A.W.S., Andy Jassy, predicted in an interview with CNBC on Wednesday that the company’s cloud business could eventually become the world’s largest technology provider to businesses. To do so, it would have to displace large software companies like Microsoft and Oracle. Mr. Jassy tweaked established technology providers in a keynote speech, describing their treatment of customers as an “abusive relationship.”
Amazon has caught most of the industry by surprise with its growth into a cloud computing powerhouse. Two rivals, Microsoft and Google, have shown the most determination to narrow Amazon’s lead. Both competitors are also investing heavily in giving machine-learning capabilities to customers.
Urs Hölzle, Google’s senior vice president of technical infrastructure, said his company saw the biggest opportunity in winning over the huge numbers of customers who have not yet shifted their computing chores to the cloud, rather than convincing those that have already adopted Amazon’s services to do so.
“For us to grow very quickly, we don’t need to steal A.W.S. users,” he said.

ThinkGeek Hatching Dragon Egg Candle
Let"s be real — unlike Game of Thrones" Daenerys Targaryen, most of us don"t have rich friends who can gift us dragon eggs when we marry dashing Dothraki warlords. But since you"re reading this, you do have internet access, which means you too can become the Mother of Dragons. With ThinkGeek"s dragon egg candle ($36), you can "hatch" your own monstrous, reptilian baby as the wax melts; all you need is a flame. Dracarys!
Each scaly shelled candle contains either a black, red, or green baby dragon, so you could feasibly collect three unique figurines to name Drogon, Viserion, and Rhaegal. Picture lighting the candles to burn while you binge-watch GOT or to create ambience next to your piping-hot bubble bath. The khaleesi was right: fire cannot kill a dragon, only help it hatch. Check out photos of the candle, then order some eggs for yourself or as a gift!

What’s wrong with Macron? 6 awkward comments the French leader has made about Africa — RT World News

French President Emmanuel Macron is on an African tour, presenting himself as the leader of a new generation that will not lecture Africans. Nevertheless, he has been handing out quite a bit of advice, and not all of it went down well.
"It’s your president who should deal with electricity"
Speaking with students of the University of Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso, the French leader said that the tradition of African nations reproaching France whenever something goes wrong should come to an end.
“Sometimes you talk to me like I’m still a colonial power. But I do not want to deal with electricity in universities in Burkina Faso,” Macron said, and the audience reacted with laughter and applause. Warmed up by the response, the French leader carried on. “It is the work of the president [of Burkina Faso],” a smiling Macron said, pointing to President Roch Marc Christian Kabore, who was listening to Macron’s speech from the same stage.
At this point, Kabore suddenly stood up and left the room. “He’s leaving… Stay there! So, he went to repair the air conditioning,” Macron said as the president was leaving. Kabore did not comment on Macron’s statement on Twitter, but tweeted that he only had “positive” memories regarding the visit.
A video posted by Macron on Twitter leaves out his “air conditioning” comments addressed to Kabore. However, social media has been flooded with the ‘full version’ of Macron’s speech.
Macron’s former presidential rival, Nicolas Dupont-Aignan, criticized his behavior in Burkina Faso. “Emmanuel Macron was arrogant with the [Burkina Faso] authorities, his behavior borders on racism,” he told Europe1 radio.
‘You owe French soldiers your applause’
Another comment that caused controversy was also made at Ouagadougou University. A female student wondered why the number of French soldiers in her country surpassed the number of freshmen from Burkina Faso in France.
“Imagine that you are a young woman living in Angouleme, France,” Macron, who claims to have been raised as a leader on the speeches of Nelson Mandela, said. “She has never seen Ouagadougou. She may not even have heard of Ouagadougou. And her younger brother fighting alongside French troops died last month to save you. And you? You don’t have a younger brother who is currently fighting on Belgian or French soil.”
“Do not come and talk to me like that of the French soldiers,” he told the girl. “You only need one thing to do for the French soldiers: to applaud them!”
The comment divided people on Twitter, with some praising Macron, and others saying that French soldiers often abuse the population of Burkina Faso rather than protecting it.
‘Who are the traffickers? They are Africans’
Macron also lost his temper in Burkina Faso when he was asked about human trafficking.
“Who are the traffickers? Ask yourselves – being the African youth – that question. You are unbelievable. Who are the traffickers? They are Africans, my friends. They are Africans. Ask yourselves the question.”
Macron continued: “It’s not the French who are the traffickers, it’s the Africans. So everyone should understand the responsibility, and we’ve started to do that, to dismantle them. But stop the argument saying, ‘It’s someone else. Show me a French, Belgian, German person, who carried out trafficking between Nigeria and Libya. This person doesn’t exist.”
Burkina Faso is the first stop on Macron’s first African tour. He will next try to reset French relations with Ivory Coast and Ghana.
"Civilizational" problems & "7-8 children per woman’
Speaking in Hamburg in June, Macron created a social media stir after saying that Africa had "civilizational" problems and one of its main challenges was women having too many children.
“When countries still have seven to eight children per woman, you can decide to spend billions of euros, but you will not stabilize anything,” he said.
Following his speech, critics lashed out at the French leader, accusing him of colonialist and racist views towards Africans.
Joke about death boats from Comoros
While giving a speech in Brittany in June, Macron ironically compared fishing boats to boats used to transport migrants from the former French colony of Comoros in horrible conditions.
“The kwassa-kwassa isn’t really used for fishing; it’s used to carry Comoran,” he said with a laugh. Kwassa-kwassa doesn’t always mean a fishing canoe, but people who die each year while trying to reach the French overseas territory of Mayotte, a major destination for illegal migrants.
Comoran Foreign Minister Mohamed Bacar Dossar called Macron’s migrant boat joke “shocking” and “scornful,” and demanded a public apology. The Elysée Palace later issued a statement, saying that Macron’s “unfortunate” comment was “inadvertently” hurtful.
‘If you are not in danger, go back to your country’
In November, speaking at a charity event in Paris, the French president was confronted by a Moroccan woman who asked for asylum. The woman said that her visa had expired but her parents live in France. The president, however, was not in the mood for charity, as he said that France can’t “welcome all the misery of the world.”
“If you are not in danger, you should go back to your country,” Macron told the woman. “You are not in danger in Morocco. I cannot give French papers to everyone who doesn’t have them. How would I deal with the people who are already here and can’t find a job?”

Jennifer Lawrence Opened Up About Dating Darren Aronofsky
“Dating the director was different.”
As part of Variety"s Actors on Actors series, Jennifer Lawrence sat down with Adam Sandler to discuss their movies and acting and stuff.
In the talk, Jennifer talked about her relationship with the writer/director of mother!, Darren Aronofsky.

Jen said normally, once she"s done promoting a movie, she"s done with it when she gets home.
Variety
But because she was dating the director, things were different.
Variety
Once Darren and Jen went back to the hotel, Darren wanted to talk about mother! more.
Variety
Jen said she gets it, though.
Variety
Still, she said she definitely struggled with being a "supportive partner."
Variety
Honestly, I get that. That movie is all sorts of fucked up and if I was consumed by it like Jen, I would need a break too.

Martian Beer Experiments : bus on mars

With "Bud on Mars," Budweiser is Sending Barley Experiments to the ISS
As well as brewing beer here on Earth, Budweiser has its sights set on another planet entirely with "Bud on Mars." Ultimately, Budweiser hopes to become the first company to brew beer on Mars. To initiate this plan, the brand will be sending two barley-based experiments via SpaceX’s upcoming cargo supply mission to the International Space Station.
These experiments will focus on barley seed exposure and testing barley germination in preparation for beer-brewing on the Red Planet. As Budweiser notes, they research conducted also has the chance to "provide valuable information on the production of barley and the larger agricultural community here on earth."
For the development of its microgravity beer, Budweiser is working with the Center for Advancement of Science in Space (CASIS), which manages the International Space Station U.S. National Laboratory.

U.S. Supreme Court Rejects Assault Rifle, Open-Carry Appeals
The U.S. Supreme Court steered clear of the intensifying gun debate after the mass shootings in Nevada and Texas, turning away two appeals from firearms advocates, including one that sought a constitutional right to own a semiautomatic assault rifle.
The justices, without comment Monday, left intact a ruling that upheld Maryland’s ban on assault weapons. In a separate case, the high court refused to require Florida to let handguns be carried openly in public.
The Supreme Court has repeatedly rebuffed gun advocates since it ruled in 2010 that people across the country have the right to keep a firearm in the home for self-defense. That case represents the last time the high court heard arguments on the reach of the Second Amendment.
Opponents say easy access to guns is to blame for continued mass shootings in the U.S., including the Oct. 1 massacre of 58 people at a concert in Las Vegas and the slaughter just a month later of 26 people in a Texas church.
In the Maryland case, a federal appeals court said assault weapons, including the popular AR-15, aren’t protected by the Second Amendment. The appeals court pointed to the Supreme Court’s 2008 Heller decision, which included a line suggesting that states and cities could ban the M-16 rifle, a military version of the AR-15.
‘Weapons of War’
"We have no power to extend Second Amendment protection to the weapons of war that the Heller decision explicitly excluded from such coverage," Judge Robert King wrote for the majority. The appeals court voted 10-4 to uphold the ban.
Maryland enacted its assault-weapon ban after the 2012 shooting that left 20 children and six educators dead at an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut. The measure also bans detachable magazines that have a capacity of more than 10 rounds.
A group of residents, gun dealers and associations challenged the restrictions with support from organizations that included the National Rifle Association.
"Maryland has banned the most popular semiautomatic rifles and magazines -- arms that are indisputably in common use for self-defense -- from the homes of law-abiding citizens," the appeal argued.
The Florida case involved Dale Lee Norman, who was arrested in 2012 while walking on a sidewalk with a handgun in a holster. Florida permits the carrying of licensed handguns outside the home, but the state requires the weapons to be concealed.
In urging the court not to hear the appeal, state officials said Florida, South Carolina and Illinois are the only states that allow carrying concealed weapons but bar carrying guns openly.
The cases are Kolbe v. Hogan, 17-127, and Norman v. Florida, 17-68.

"Love, Actually" Wasn't Supposed To Be A Christmas Movie And We Are Shook
Wait… What?!
According to Love, Actually director, Richard Curtis, the movie wasn"t originally supposed to take place at Christmastime.
This is bananas.
Universal Pictures / Via buzzexpress.co.uk
AND I HAVE QUESTIONS.
????
Universal Pictures / Via dailymail.co.uk
First, would Rowan Atkinson be rendered useless?
He could be wrapping a Valentine"s Day gift, but then we"d lose the "bloody holly" line and that WILL NOT STAND.
Universal Pictures / Via cosmopolitan.com
What would be the point of the pageant?
This movie takes place in London, so Thanksgiving is off the table.
Universal Pictures / Via zoowithroy.com
St. Patrick"s Day, maybe??
Nothing screams "love" quite like March 17th.
Universal Pictures / Via irishtimes.com
Why would Sarah and Karl be dancing, if not at a Christmas party?
Actually, maybe our lives would be better if this devastation never happened.
Universal Pictures / Via giphy.com
Would Jamie have skipped Easter with his family instead?
"I hate Uncle Jamie" would be a strong sentiment if he"d just left with some Cadbury eggs.
Universal Pictures / Via quickmeme.com
Without the opportunity to send a Christmas card, how would the Prime Minister know to go after Natalie?
Is it an Arbor Day card? Do British people even celebrate Arbor Day? Does anyone celebrate Arbor Day? I DON"T KNOW!
Universal Pictures / Via bullyscomics.blogspot.com
Why would Harry give Mia a necklace? Is it her birthday?
But that wouldn"t really explain all of the other gift-giving movie moments. AHHH MY BRAIN.
Universal Pictures / Via buzzfeed.com
I mean, I guess Sam could"ve chased Joanna through the airport during the summer...
NOT AS ROMANTIC, THOUGH.
Universal Pictures / Via buzzfeed.com
...and it would have been nice for Colin to experience the Midwest in the spring.
But then why would the women bring him home if it"s not a "cold, cold night"???
Universal Pictures / Via bustle.com
What would Billy Mack have changed the lyrics to???
"If you really love Good Friday, come on and let it... shine?" UGH THIS MAKES NO SENSE.
Universal Pictures / Via fictionmachine.com
If it"s not the season for carol-singers, how would Mark convince Juliet to lie to his best friend/her husband?
Oh, wait, they don"t sell Girl Scout cookies in the UK. THEY LITERALLY ONLY HAVE CHRISTMAS.
Universal Pictures / Via buzzfeed.com
Let"s be grateful that Richard had a Christmas epiphany because the movie just wouldn"t be the same without it.
