The FBI agent at the center of a media firestorm regarding the bureau"s investigations of Hillary Clinton and President Donald Trump contributed to former FBI director James Comey"s remarks to Congress about reopening the Clinton email investigation days before the 2016 election.
According to CNN, Peter Strzok emailed a draft of Comey"s memo to several people within the FBI on Oct. 27. Comey sent the final draft of the letter to Congress the following day.
Comey announced in July 2016 that he would not recommend charges be brought against Clinton for her use of a private email setup during her time as secretary of state. Shortly before the election, however, the FBI learned that emails belonging to Clinton"s assistant Huma Abedin were located on a laptop belonging to Abedin"s husband Anthony Weiner, who at the time was being investigated for sexting with a teenage girl.
On Nov. 6, two days before the election, the FBI informed Congress that Comey would not change his earlier conclusion to the Clinton case after reviewing the emails in question.
Strzok has come under fire for exchanging text messages with another FBI official that were pro-Clinton and anti-Trump before and after the election. Some have speculated that Strzok may have been part of an FBI conspiracy to help Clinton get elected and then, after Trump won, force Trump out of office via the Russia investigation.
Two sources told CNN that Strzok sent text messages around the time Comey told Congress he was taking a second look at the Clinton probe that tried to prevent making Comey"s statement public because of its proximity to the election.
Below is the memo draft that Strzok emailed to FBI colleagues. It closely resembles the final version that was sent to lawmakers on Capitol Hill:
"In previous Congressional testimony, I referred, under oath, to the fact that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had completed its investigation of former Secretary Clinton"s personal email server. Due to recent developments, I am writing to supplement my previous testimony. In connection with an unrelated case, the FBI has learned of the existence of emails pertinent to the investigation. I am writing to inform you that yesterday, I decided the FBI had an obligation to take appropriate investigative steps to review these emails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to assess their importance to our investigation.
"While at this time the FBI cannot yet assess the significance of this material, I believe it is important to update the Committee about our efforts in light of my previous testimony."

On this day in history, this infamous screenshot was taken when an inexplicably awkward exchange occurred between exiting First Lady, Michelle Obama, and incoming First Lady, Melania Trump:

Upon arriving at the White House, Trump handed Obama an unexpected gift, which left Obama awkwardly looking for a place to put it down.
President Obama quickly stepped in, grabbing the gift and bringing it inside the White House, but this left the rest of us feeling like Brad Pitt circa Seven:

AT THE start of 2017, just before Donald Trump was inaugurated as president, a survey of fund managers by Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML) found they believed that being positive on the dollar was “the most crowded trade”. It turned out they were right to be cautious. On a trade-weighted basis, the currency has fallen by 9% against other major currencies in the past year.
It is not clear what the Trump administration thinks about this. At the recent World Economic Forum in Davos, Steven Mnuchin, the treasury secretary, said: “Obviously a weak dollar is good for us as it relates to trade and opportunities.” Although the rest of his statement was more nuanced, it is unusual for anyone in his position to depart from a “strong dollar” line. The greenback duly fell in price.

Mr Trump then followed up with a statement in favour of a strong dollar in the long term, which caused a rebound. Since it was only last April that he referred to the dollar as being “too strong”, the markets can be forgiven for being confused. Never mind singing from the same hymn-sheet, the American authorities are using different tonal systems.
Adding to the puzzle is the administration’s focus on eliminating the trade deficit. The recent package of tax cuts, by boosting demand, is likely to suck in imports and make the deficit worse. The trade deficit tends to fall during a recession, but that is not a desirable outcome. So it may need a big decline in the dollar to effect a cut in the deficit, while keeping the economy buoyant.
If the dollar is poised to experience one of its long periods of weakness, as in the late 1980s or the early 2000s (see chart), what would that mean for the financial markets? Much may depend on why the dollar is weak. If the weakness relates to bad news about the American economy, then that is usually bad for equities and good for government bonds. The reverse applies if the weakness reflects a boom in emerging markets; that would be a sign of investors taking advantage of exciting opportunities elsewhere.
Current dollar weakness seems to be linked to a rebound in the global economy. That also helps explain why stockmarkets have started 2018 in a buoyant mood. A weaker dollar helps American multinationals, as Mr Mnuchin suggested. Not only does it make their exports more competitive, but their overseas earnings are also worth more in dollar terms. BAML says that, in the fourth quarter, 68% of companies with high foreign sales beat analysts’ forecasts of profits and sales. Only 39% of companies with no foreign exposure managed to do so.
Although equities have been performing strongly, Treasury-bond prices have been falling (in other words, yields have been rising). This may suggest that foreign investors require a higher return to persuade them to put their money in a depreciating currency. Another explanation is that American bond investors think stronger economic growth will eventually lead to higher inflation and are demanding higher yields to compensate.
What about the rest of the world? A weak dollar means a strong euro and thus, all else being equal, tighter financial conditions in Europe. Mario Draghi, the president of the European Central Bank, made some pointed remarks on January 25th about disorderly movements in exchange rates, and their adverse implications for financial and economic stability. He took a more doveish tone on monetary policy than investors expected; the ECB will not want the euro to rise too far. Government-bond yields in Europe have also been rising, so financial conditions are already tightening.
Life tends to be easier for developing countries when the dollar is falling than when it is rising. The Asian financial crisis, for example, occurred during the dollar surge of the late 1990s. Many countries peg their currencies, formally or informally, to the greenback; if the dollar is rising, they may be forced to tighten monetary policy in order to maintain the link. A weaker dollar gives countries scope to cut interest rates, boosting growth.
Of course, all these trends may reverse if they go too far. If a lot of money flows into emerging markets, their economies can become overheated and their exporters uncompetitive in the face of overvalued currencies, leading to an eventual crisis. If Treasury-bond yields rise far enough, that will prompt capital to flow back into the dollar. Furthermore, a sharp rise in bond yields will put the squeeze on economic growth. Investors do not mind a bit of dollar weakness; they just don’t want too much of it.
People love to sparkle, and I"m not just talking about swiping on extra highlighter. This year will be the year of sparkling everything in the world of drinks: from a surge of kombucha-like probiotic waters to an increased desire for guilty-pleasure "sodas" that are actually healthy, 2018 is all about getting fizzy. Perhaps the Kirakira craze has made its way to the food sphere - it"s the edible version of the shimmer-and-glitter phenomenon, if you will. Or maybe it"s just the fact that the word "sparkling" makes everything seem a little bit more fun, cold-brew coffee included (looking at you, Stumptown, which has debuted Honey Lemon Sparkling Cold Brew).
This year, we"ll see more eye-catching sparkling waters on shelves than ever before; La Croix"s comeback was only the beginning. Look out for Alta Palla, the brightly colored cans of sparkling waters and juices, at Whole Foods and Good Idea Drinks, the "Swedish sugar buster" that wants to help kick people"s soda habits one Sparkling Orange Mango Water at a time.
If you"re feeling adventurous, you might go for a pickle-flavored probiotic gut shot that tastes like garlicky pickle soda. Maybe you"ve thought about giving up coffee but still want the caffeine fix, and you"d be able to turn to Phocus, a Kentucky-based company that makes naturally caffeinated, calorie-free sparkling water (the secret is extractions from green tea leaves). Next-level machines will even translate the trend from stores for the masses to homes for the serious aficionados. Drinkmate can carbonate anything from lemonade to wine and will help satisfy seltzer cravings at a moment"s notice.
Spark your interest (see what I did there?) by trying out some of the unique recipes ahead that put an unexpected fizzy twist on classics, like green tea "soda," homemade sparkling cold brew, and a bubbly fruit smoothie. Embracing sparkling everything is just one of the biggest trends of 2018.

"I"m here at Whole Foods and it"s Friday morning at eleven thirty. There"s nothing to complain about in a store like this. I"m looking around for samples because I love the samples. I did not bring a list this time because I really only needed the hair dye, but I thought I"d go through the isles and just search anyway to see what else I could find.
I need some canned corn and I"ve got a couple of choices: there"s the 365 brand or there is the Westbrae organic corn. I can"t imagine there"s a huge different between these two choices, so I"m going to pick the 365 Whole foods can because it"s a dollar cheaper. Wanna take a peek in my cart, let"s see if I can show you.
The only complaint I have is I haven"t found a single sample yet which is really distressing because it"s one of my favorite, favorite things. So hopefully when I get to the cheese area there will be something.
Well, just found a couple of beverage samples: boring! I would love a sample bar like they have at Trader Joe"s, it makes the trip just that much more pleasant. It also gives me a lot of ideas for recipes. So that"s really the only thing that I can think of that I would change."

They are moving into an industry where the lines between traditionally distinct areas, such as pharmacies, insurers and providers, are increasingly blurry. CVS Health’s deal last month to buy the health insurer Aetna for about $69 billion is just one example of the changes underway. Separately, Amazon’s potential entry into the pharmacy business continues to rattle major drug companies and distributors.
The companies said the initiative, which is in its early stages, would be “free from profit-making incentives and constraints,” but did not specify whether that meant they would create a nonprofit organization. The tax implications were also unclear because so few details were released.
Jamie Dimon, the chief executive of JPMorgan Chase, said in a statement that the effort could eventually be expanded to benefit all Americans.
“The health care system is complex, and we enter into this challenge open-eyed about the degree of difficulty,” Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s founder and chief executive, said in a statement. “Hard as it might be, reducing health care’s burden on the economy while improving outcomes for employees and their families would be worth the effort.”
Taking On ‘the Hungry Tapeworm’
A look at the three companies that announced a joint health care initiative on Tuesday.
The announcement touched off a wave of speculation about what the new company might do, especially given Amazon’s extensive reach into the daily lives of Americans — from where they buy their paper towels to what they watch on television. It follows speculation that the company, which recently purchased the grocery chain Whole Foods, might use its stores as locations for pharmacies or clinics.
“It could be big,” Ed Kaplan, who negotiates health coverage on behalf of large employers as the national health practice leader for the Segal Group, said of the announcement. “Those are three big players, and I think if they get into health care insurance or the health care coverage space, they are going to make a big impact.”
But others were less sure, noting that the three companies — which, combined, employ more than one million people — might still hold little sway over the largest insurers and pharmacy benefit managers, who oversee the benefits of tens of millions of Americans.
“This is not news in terms of jumbo employers being frustrated with what they can get through the traditional system,” said Sam Glick of the management consulting firm Oliver Wyman in San Francisco. He played down the notion that the three partners would have more success getting lower prices from hospitals and doctors. “The idea that they could have any sort of negotiation leverage with unit cost is a pretty far stretch.”
Even the three companies don’t seem to be sure of how to shake up health care. People briefed on the plan, who asked for anonymity because the discussions were private, said the executives decided to announce the initiative while still a concept in part so they can begin hiring staff for the new company.
Three people familiar with the partnership said it took shape as Mr. Bezos, Mr. Buffett, and Mr. Dimon, who are friends, discussed the challenges of providing insurance to their employees. They decided their combined access to data about how consumers make choices, along with an understanding of the intricacies of health insurance, would inevitably lead to some kind of new efficiency — whatever it might turn out to be.
“The ballooning costs of health care act as a hungry tapeworm on the American economy,” Mr. Buffett said in the statement. “Our group does not come to this problem with answers. But we also do not accept it as inevitable.”
Over the past several months, the three had met formally — along with Todd Combs, an investment officer at Berkshire Hathaway who is also on JPMorgan’s board — to discuss the idea, according to a person familiar with Mr. Buffett’s thinking.
The three chief executives saw one another at the Alfalfa Club dinner in Washington on Saturday, but by then each had already had dozens of conversations with the small in-house teams they had assembled. The plan was set.
Mr. Buffett’s motivation stems in part from conversations he has had with two people close to him who have been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, according to the person. Mr. Buffett, the person said, believes the condition of the country’s health care system is a root cause of economic inequality, with wealthier people enjoying better, longer lives because they can afford good coverage As Mr. Buffett himself has aged — he is 87 — the contrast between his moneyed friends and others has grown starker, the person said.
The companies said they would initially focus on using technology to simplify care, but did not elaborate on how they intended to do that or bring down costs. One of the people briefed on the alliance said the new company wouldn’t replace existing health insurers or hospitals.
Planning for the new company is being led by Marvelle Sullivan Berchtold, a JPMorgan managing director who was previously head of the Swiss drugmaker Novartis’s mergers and acquisitions strategy; Mr. Combs; and Beth Galetti, a senior vice president at Amazon.
One potential avenue for the partnership might be an online health care dashboard that connects employees with the closest and best doctor specializing in whatever ailment they select from a drop-down menu. Perhaps the companies would strike deals to offer employee discounts with service providers like medical testing facilities.
“Each of those companies has extensive experience using transformative technology in their own businesses,” said John Sculley, the former chief executive of Apple who is now chairman of a health care start-up, RxAdvance. “I think it’s a great counterweight to what government leadership hasn’t done, which is to focus on how do we make this health care system sustainable.”
Erik Gordon, a professor at the University of Michigan’s Ross School of Business, predicted that the companies would attempt to modernize the cumbersome process of doctor appointments by making it more like booking a restaurant reservation on OpenTable, while eliminating the need to regularly fill out paper forms on clipboards.

“I think they will bring the customer-facing, patient-facing thing into your smartphone,” he said.
Amazon has long been mentioned by health care analysts and industry executives as a potential new player in the sector. While the company has remained quiet about its plans, some analysts noted that companies often use their own employees as a testing ground for future initiatives.
The entry of Amazon and its partners adds to the upheaval in an industry where much is changing, from government programs after the overhaul of the tax law to the uncertain future of the Affordable Care Act. All the while, medical costs have persistently been on the rise.
Nationwide, average premiums for family coverage for employees rose to $18,764 last year, an increase of 19 percent since 2012, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation. Workers are increasingly paying a greater share of those costs — they now pay 30 percent of the premium, in addition to high deductibles and growing co-payments.
“Our members’ balance sheets speak for themselves — health care is a growing cost at a time when other costs are either not rising or falling,” said Robert Andrews, chief executive of the Healthcare Transformation Alliance, a group of 46 companies, including Coca-Cola and American Express, that have banded together to lower health care costs.
Other major employers have also sought more direct control over their employees’ health care. Walmart contracted with groups like the Cleveland Clinic, Mayo and Geisinger, among others, to take care of employees who need organ transplants and heart and spine care. Caterpillar, the construction equipment manufacturer, sets its own rules for drug coverage, which it has said saves it millions of dollars per year, even though it still uses a pharmacy benefit manager to process its claims.
Suzanne Delbanco, the executive director for the Catalyst for Payment Reform, a nonprofit group that mainly represents employers, said controlling rising prices is especially hard in markets where a local hospital or medical group dominates. While some have tried to tackle the issue in different ways, like sending employees with heart conditions to a specific group, “it’s piecemeal,” she said.
She added, “There are so many opportunities to do this better.”
The issue is not solely a 21st-century concern: In 1915, Henry Ford became increasingly worried about the quality of health care available to his growing work force in Detroit, so he opened the Henry Ford Hospital. It is still in existence today.
While certainly not a Super Bowl-specific food, queso will surely show up on lots of tables this Sunday. If you have an urge to make the classic cheese dip a little healthier, there are several ways to go about it without losing flavor.
The most popular recipe is probably the one involving a whole brick of plasticky orange Velveeta, which is admittedly delicious when melted to its perfectly gooey, salty state, especially if there’s a can of Ro-Tel involved. But if you have misgivings about highly processed foods, or if you’re trying to stick to a plan of healthier eating in general, or if you can’t eat any dairy at all, there are several other appealing options to satisfy your queso craving. Let us count the ways.
While a bowl full of various dairy products may not be the healthiest thing ever, if you’d rather avoid preservatives and additives, make high-falutin’ queso with high-quality cheese and whole milk, organic by all means. Just keep stirring and you will eventually achieve the smooth texture you’re after. Get our Texas Queso Dip recipe.
There are plenty of “skinny queso” recipes out there, usually involving things like low-fat cheese and skim milk, or even a combo of almond milk and non-fat Greek yogurt. If you’re willing to subvert your expectations, you could try this creamy Chilled Chile con Queso Dip recipe made with cottage cheese and diced avocado. Okay, so it’s not the ooey-gooey, lift-a-chip-three-feet-in-the-air-to-watch-the-cheese-stretch-forever queso you may dream of, but it is an interesting, relatively healthy choice with plenty of flavor from jalapeños, onion, garlic, cilantro, and cumin.
It can do so much, from standing in for wings (as in our Buffalo Cauliflower with Blue Cheese Dip recipe) to serving as rice—it should be no surprise that people have figured out how to make dip with it too. This paleo version combines blended cauliflower with coconut milk, nutritional yeast, and seasonings, for a perfectly creamy dip you can serve warmed up or at room temp. Feel free to add more spices if you like things hotter. Get the recipe.
Cashew nuts commonly replace cream cheese in vegan cheesecakes, and it turns out they can also make a killer vegan queso. It’s just a matter of soaking them until soft, then blending them really well with a few other ingredients, including jalapeños, nutritional yeast (there’s a good reason it’s in so many “cheesy” vegan dishes), and spices. Creamy, cheesy-tasting, and a lovely yellow-gold, this one’s a clear winner. Get the recipe. (Or you can do cashew queso blanco if you prefer.)
If you have your heart set on a truly cheesy dip, you can still add some vegetables to the mix, like in this Spinach Queso Blanco recipe. Baby spinach is sautéed with garlic and roasted Anaheim chiles, then stirred into a warm, smooth, gooey blend of white American cheese and whole milk. Feel free to double the amount of greens, so you have something more akin to Tex-Mex warm spinach dip—because nobody doesn’t like warm spinach dip. Adding fresh pico de gallo bumps the vegetable content even higher, so you can feel a little more virtuous even as you’re scraping the bottom of the bowl. If you’re not a spinach fan, consider stirring in other stuff, from corn kernels to diced sautéed bell peppers and onions.
7. Serve it with healthier chips (and chip replacements).
Greasy, crunchy tortilla chips are a perfect partner to queso, but it’s alarmingly easy to eat about five times the recommended serving size. Choose healthier chips at the store (whole grain, for instance, or black bean chips for your gluten-free folks), but also offer a vibrant assortment of raw vegetables—anything crunchy, from carrots and bell peppers to broccoli and cauliflower. If you’re doing the Whole30 thing, you can also bake homemade plantain or sweet potato chips to go with your legitimately delicious dairy-free queso.

Luke Bryan will spend the early part of 2018 weaving his What Makes You Country Tour dates in between his obligations as a judge on ABC"s rebooted American Idol, which premieres March 11th. At the close of the season, Bryan will mount a supersized version of the tour – dubbed What Makes You Country XL – bound for stadiums in the U.S. and Canada with an all-star lineup.
Kicking off May 31st at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, the What Makes You Country XL Tour will visit 13 total stadiums in the midst of Bryan"s previously announced spring and summer tour. The itinerary includes famed ball parks such as MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and Heinz Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with double headers lined up at Boston"s Fenway Park and Chicago"s Wrigley Field. Director Oliver Stone took a swipe at the Washington Post and Stephen Spielberg’s “lame-brained” film, The Post in a Facebook tribute to the late journalist Robert Parry on Sunday.
Stone commended the Consortium News’ founder for breaking from the “tyranny of mainstream media conformity” and his breaking of the Iran-Contra scandal.
Stone then pointed to the fact that the Washington Post’s publisher Katharine Graham, who is the subject of ‘The Post’, “deliberately ignored” that story.
“Note how she’s now being lionized in Spielberg’s lame-brained ‘The Post’,” he said of the character played by Meryl Streep.
‘The Post’ follows the period in 1971 when the Washington Post debated reporting on the Pentagon Papers after the New York Times had been prevented by doing so by a court order.
The Pentagon Papers was a Department of Defense study outlining the history of the US role in Vietnam dating from World War II to 1968. Leaked to the NYT by whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg, it revealed the government lied about secret military operations including the bombing of Laos and Cambodia.
Graham’s decision to side with her editors and report on the Pentagon Papers in June 1971 is depicted as heroic in Spielberg’s film, despite her enjoying relationships with establishment political figures such as the Kennedys and Henry Kissinger.
Parry, who was a correspondent for the Post-owned Newsweek in the 1980s, said he witnessed “self-censorship because of the coziness between Post-Newsweek executives and senior national security figures” during his time at the publication.
"On one occasion in 1987, I was told that my story about the CIA funneling anti-Sandinista money through Nicaragua’s Catholic Church had been watered down because the story needed to be run past Mrs. Graham, and Henry Kissinger was her house guest that weekend,” Parry told FAIR in 2001. “Apparently, there was fear among the top editors that the story as written might cause some consternation.”
“As audiences, we"re inundated with the surface of events but seem unable to interpret them correctly,” Stone continued, “With intelligent, common-sense repetition (not the continual Russia-bashing of NY Times and WaPo), we learn and remember.”
Stone is known for a vast body of films portraying political figures and subjects, Including the Vietnam war in ‘Platoon,’ John F Kennedy in ‘JFK,’ Richard Nixon in ‘Nixon’ and George W. Bush in ‘W.’ He also directed the acclaimed Snowden movie about NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden.
