19 Revelations From DeMario Jackson"s "E! News" Interview That Didn"t Air
E! News" two-part exclusive interview with former Bachelor in Paradise contestant DeMario Jackson aired earlier this week, after nearly three weeks of rumors revolving around an alleged incident of sexual misconduct on the show"s Mexico set.
On June 4, the first night of production on Season 4 of Bachelor in Paradise, a sexual encounter between Corinne Olympios and Jackson occurred that prompted two producers to file a complaint. On June 11, news broke that Warner Bros., which produces the Bachelor franchise for ABC, had halted production and launched an investigation into the incident. And then, on June 20, Warner Bros. announced that its investigation turned up no evidence of misconduct and that production would resume on Bachelor in Paradise Season 4. (On June 29, a few days after Jackson"s E! News interview aired, Olympios released a statement that her legal team"s investigation was "completed to [her] satisfaction.")
For the first time since the incident, Jackson provided his take on the incident and what transpired afterward. But there was much more in the full hour and 43 minute interview, which E! posted online Wednesday.
1. According to Jackson, the alleged incident between him and Corinne Olympios happened around 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 4. He said no one was severely intoxicated by that point and also noted that Olympios grabbed him away from Alexis Waters, another contestant on Bachelor in Paradise Season 4 from Nick Viall"s season of The Bachelor. Jackson said that approximately an hour or two after he arrived on the Paradise set, Olympios made the first move. "She snatched me away from Alexis. She did a Corinne moment," said Jackson, who said Olympios "hopped in my arms and I put my drink down... This was probably between like 4:00 and 5:00. You know, it was extremely early ... We"re all arriving, we were like staggering in." In his memory, Jackson had had a mixed drink and three shots at that point. (A representative for Olympios told BuzzFeed News she had no comment about Jackson"s E! News interview.)
2. Jackson said it didn"t occur to him that Olympios could be too drunk to consent, though he also said he wasn"t able to get an erection to have sex. "I get every guy"s biggest fear. I get like straight whiskey dick," he said. "I"m like, kill me, kill me kill, me, and she"s like, "No, it"s okay" ... And then I get out of the pool and I have like my legs in the pool like this and I"m kind of just like hanging out really, and then, this is when she like gets up out of the pool and just like puts her lady parts like right on my face." Jackson also said: "It was nothing that had never been seen on Paradise before. It was something that — there was nothing like crazy or like wild. We were both super coherent. We were both speaking, like... never once did it hit me like, "Man, this girl"s too drunk," because we were still talking. We were having, like, conversations."
Later on in the interview, Jackson said, "I"m on Paradise, it"s not my job to walk around with a Breathalyzer. Unless some chick is like passed out on the ground or something, this isn"t the case. ... And number 1, I"m drunk, so do I not have the same rights? If I"m 10 shots deep and you"re 10 shots deep, and you and I, you know, both make out, I mean, why is it the man"s guilty? Obviously it"s playing devil"s advocate, but why is it just on me? ... If you have two people who are equally at fault for drinking and making out and hooking up?"
3. According to Jackson, it wasn"t until the cast gathered to meet host Chris Harrison that the binge drinking hit a peak. Jackson said Harrison pointed out to him how drunk he was. "We were getting ready to get lined up because Chris Harrison was coming to speak to us… so this is probably around 5 p.m./6 p.m. or so," Jackson said. "Chris comes and talks to us probably like an hour or so later and no lie, between that hour, it was like go time. ... At this point, we’re all drunk." Jackson said Harrison said: ""DeMario, get your shit together, pick your head up, where are you, open your eyes. Corinne, get up."" Jackson also said fellow cast member Derek Peth had thrown up on himself. "We"re just like, ‘Bro, get it together,’ and like, Corinne"s drunk, and like, everybody is, like, just drunk, but it"s not like a bad [thing]," Jackson said. "We"re just in Paradise, you know? It’s nothing that TV has never seen before.”
Jackson said Harrison introduced the cast to the new bartender, Wells Adams from last season of Bachelor in Paradise. When he talked to Adams the next morning, Jackson said, “Wells was like, ‘Dude, when I got in here, you guys were like going for it.’ He goes, "It was very crazy to walk in to because you guys were already at that peak level.’”
5. By Monday, the day after his hookup with Olympios, Jackson already had solidified who he was getting a rose from at the ceremony on Tuesday: Waters. On Bachelor in Paradise, either the men or the women will give out roses to the opposite gender during a rose ceremony, and they"ll switch who gives out the roses during the next. If you are not given a rose, you are sent home from the show. “On Monday, it"s all about locking up the roses, so by now, Monday, Alexis was like, ‘Yo, I’m going to give you my rose." I"m like, ‘Cool!’ So I kind of told all the fellas, ‘By the way, I have my rose already.’ Vinny [Ventiera] is like, ‘Cool, Corinne is giving me hers.’”
6. On Tuesday, Jackson said one of the producers "hyped" him up about his hookups during his confessional (aka "ITM," which stands for "in the moment"). "I discussed this in my in the moment," Jackson said. "[The producer] is like, ‘D! You and Corinne, you and Alexis.’... This is like, my boy. Some producers know how to get me going and once I get going, I"m not stopping. ... He"s like "D! First-day legend.’ ... Like, he"s hyping me." (A representative for Warner Bros. did not respond to BuzzFeed News"s request for a comment.)
7. Jackson believes producers had seen the incident in question between him and Olympios by Tuesday. "At this point ... first day has already been chopped up," Jackson said. "It"s already ready to go to the last form of editing. They"ve already went over it, they’ve discussed it, so they"ve all seen it and nothing’s wrong."
8. But by Tuesday night, Jackson sensed something was wrong right before the rose ceremony Tuesday night, and he thought, ABC is going to fuck me again. "I"m getting ready to like, you know, put on my clothes for like the rose ceremony and all that kind of stuff and I do my ITM ... and [the producer is] like, ‘D, it’s happening again. You know, you had Corinne the first night, now you’ve got Alexis. How"s it going?’ I"m like, ‘You know what? I"m super secure, I"m super confident, but I feel like ABC is going to fuck me again.’ My exact words: ‘I feel like ABC is gonna fuck me again,’ and he goes, ‘What do you mean?’ I go, ‘I don"t know, dude.’ I said, "I feel like something crazy is gonna happen."" (When reached, a representative for ABC had no comment and forwarded BuzzFeed News to Warner Bros.)
9. Shortly after that, Jackson said Bachelor franchise executive producer Elan Gale asked to speak with him and told him to take off his mic. Jackson said he had a friendly rapport with Gale, who he said once joked to him, "Oh, you wearing skinny jeans? I thought you were a black man. Where’s your dick at?” Jackson said Gale told him that that night, at the rose ceremony, he should tell Harrison and the cast he"s leaving because he"s "not here for the right reasons." Jackson thought Gale might be playing a joke on him. "I"m like... ‘Elan, why? Why?" He goes, ‘I can"t tell you. ... Let"s just say I know things, and it would just be best.’” (Gale did not respond to BuzzFeed News"s request for a comment.)
10. Jackson said he felt like the producers set him up early on in the current season of The Bachelorette when the contestants played basketball with Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and afterward, Jackson was exposed by an ex. She showed up at the gymnasium where they were filming, saying she and Jackson had been dating when he joined the show. The encounter led Rachel Lindsay, this season"s Bachelorette, to send him home. "They knew that this crazy Bumble girl was gonna be here, but they all lied and said, ‘No, she just showed up to the gym,’" Jackson said. "She specifically called my mother on Facebook. She called my mother and she"s like, "I"m gonna ruin your son, I"m gonna call ABC.’" Jackson wondered why the producers didn"t do more fact-checking. "She called in, but like so many people call in per year, per season about people and you guys never do this," he said. "Why me? Like, what was, like, the beef with me, especially the way they did it was very like, sneaky. It was very like, "Hahaha, like, let"s do this. Let"s make him a villain for the bigger picture," which is Paradise, and I was like, "Okay, cool."”
11. Jackson said that at the end of their conversation on Tuesday, Gale said he"d check back with him in 30 minutes. "I go up to my producer and I"m like, ‘Bro, what"s going on?” Jackson said. "And I go up to Alexis. I told her, I was like, ‘Yo, I don"t know what"s going on." ... So she"s asking around, I"m asking around." Jackson said he found one more producer that he knew from The Bachelorette who also wasn"t able to provide more information. After drinking before the rose ceremony, Jackson said he went to get food and another producer came up to him and said, "Hey, can we speak offline?" "I’m like, ‘Yeah, what"s up?’ And then, all of a sudden, I walk up the hill and you’ve got an executive producer standing right there... he"s like, "Well, we need you to just go back to the hotel room to breathe."”
12. In the hotel room early on Wednesday morning, Jackson was informed of the third-party complaint about him and Olympios. "This is Bachelor in Paradise. Like, people have sex here. We"re all adults. That’s what people do," Jackson told a producer after spending the night pacing in his hotel room. ""If you"re upset about people having sex, go get another job," and he’s like, ‘Yeah, I know.’ ‘So why do I have to go home?’ ‘Well, you know we"re just taking precautionary measures.’ I"m like, ‘What does a third party have to do with Corinne and I? Did she consent? Yeah. Did you consent? Yeah"... I asked him that and he"s like, "Well, she didn"t say anything.’ I was like, ‘So, why are we caring?’ ‘Well, you know, it"s like a workplace environment, man. We take these things seriously.’”
13. The longer Jackson was in the hotel room, the more questions he said he had, and eventually, he suspected it was a racially charged situation. "I"m just asking like, ‘Why? Why me?’ And for me, it’s just, I"m not the kind of person that brings up like, ‘Ah! Black man in America,’ this and that, but at this point, I"m thinking like, what else could it be?" Jackson said. "I asked, "You guys have shown sex before on this TV show?" ‘Yes.’ Like was there anything out of the [ordinary]? ‘No…’ I asked them, ‘Have you guys ever shown interracial..." and he"s like, "Uh, I don"t know,"" said Jackson. ""Because I don"t watch the show.""
14. Later that Wednesday morning, Jackson said he was visited by an executive producer. After an emotional conversation, he was sent home. ""What did this person see that you guys didn"t see? You"re the executive producer. You have 15-plus years in this industry. So you mean to tell me that an assistant producer, who"s been working for one fucking season...?"" Jackson asked the executive. "He goes, ‘I don"t know, because I’ve watched the video a thousand times and yeah, it"s raunchy as shit, and it"s softcore porn in a sense, but it"s nothing bad. It"s not," and I’m like, "What is it?" And again I ask him, "Is it race?" and he’s like, ‘Yeah, you know, I don’t know. I don’t know.""
Jackson said the producer had tears in his eyes. "We spoke about the possibility of 300 people not having a job and I felt horrible," he said. "He was extremely genuine. ... I can tell he was confused. I was confused. I can tell that he really didn"t know the full story himself and it was just a very, like, man-to-man [talk]. And he’s a tall guy too, so he was, like, bigger than me and gave me, like, a big bear hug, and like, I got tears in my eyes, he has tears in his eyes, you know? But I"m still thinking like, ‘Man, this sucks, you know?""
15. Jackson got home on Thursday and the news broke on Sunday night after a producer called him and said, "Hey, shit"s about to get real, real fast." It was shortly after that that he realized he needed a lawyer. "I"m not thinking anything legal," Jackson said of his assumption in the days prior. "I"m thinking like, Dang, I got a little too turnt up, got wild in the pool, and I got kicked off the show."
16. Later, Jackson said, he was told the producer who made the claim "never watched the tape." "She wasn"t even present while this was going on," Jackson said. "She heard over a walkie-talkie later on in the night when Corinne was drunk that Corinne and DeMario hooked up and I"m like, "What about the three other guys? What about them? You know how they say black lives matter, all lives matter? All hookups matter? ... Why was it specifically, "DeMario hooked up with Corinne?""
17. Jackson said he had joined the Bachelor in Paradise cast in hopes of finding redemption after the incident on The Bachelorette, much like former villain-turned-Bachelor Nick Viall. "I tell the producers just like homies, I"m like, ‘Yo, you guys really fucked me. I understand it"s like reality [TV] and like, I get it, but like, you guys really, really fucked...’ and that"s the reason why I did Paradise, because it was the whole redemption," Jackson said. "You get to have the last laugh. I saw how [Nick Viall] was this bad-boy villain for two seasons and then he went on Paradise, and so I saw that, and I respected it, and was like, "Cool, okay, I could do that.""
18. Jackson said ultimately, he views the crew as a family. "We"re really family and even through all this whole process, people have reached out to me who could have lost their jobs talking to me," he said.
19. And he doesn"t harbor any ill will toward Olympios, but he sees her saying she doesn"t remember what happened that night as "a gray area." "I feel bad for her. I feel bad for her family. I feel like she was given wrong information or she was part of something that was much bigger," Jackson said. "One thing that I"ve noticed in all of her real [statements], she"s saying she doesn"t remember and she"s saying she doesn"t blame me, she blames the production. But at the same time, saying you don"t remember... it"s like a gray area. I get what she"s doing. She"s being very smart wording certain things. ... But I don"t know."
He added: "We"re all pawns, we"re all victims to certain degrees."

United Is Expanding Their Polaris Lounge At Chicago O’Hare
United opened their first Polaris Lounge at Chicago O’Hare late last year. Polaris is the name for United’s new premium cabin experience, which involves a completely new product both on the ground and in the air.
While I haven’t been to United’s Polaris Lounge in Chicago, it looks stunning, and like the best business class lounge we’ve seen from a US airline. Travis has reviewed the Polaris Lounge, as well as every dish on the menu, given that the lounge has a sit down restaurant.

United isn’t the only US airline investing in their lounges. American is also introducing new Flagship Lounges for international business class passengers, which are much better than Admirals Clubs (they also have new Flagship First Dining facilities, but those are for international first class customers).

However, my concern with all of these lounges is crowding. At the end of the day the single most important feature of a lounge is that it’s a quiet space in which you can work and relax, and that requires having a large enough dedicated space.
It looks like United is starting to run into crowding issues with their Polaris Lounge in Chicago. Chicago Business Journal reports that United will expand their Polaris Lounge at Chicago O’Hare Airport by the end of 2017. The Polaris Lounge will be taking over a portion of the Concourse C United Club footprint, which is right next to the Polaris Lounge:
A United spokeswoman said today the Polaris lounge expansion at O’Hare is scheduled to done by the end of 2017, with the adjacent, reconfigured United Club near Gate C16 expected to open “in early 2018.”

Also interesting to note is that the story quotes a United spokesperson as saying that the Polaris Lounges in Newark and San Francisco should open by the end of 2017.
The story also mentions how American is ahead of schedule on construction of their new 17,000 square foot Flagship Lounge at O’Hare, which could be completed as soon as September. As a point of comparison, the United Polaris Lounge is 15,000 square feet, so the Flagship Lounge will be bigger. I could be mistaken here, but I think United’s international presence out of Chicago is significantly bigger than American’s, so that lounge shouldn’t be too crowded by comparison. Then again, American also lets elite members traveling internationally into the lounge, while United doesn’t.

Palestinian fined $200 for wearing underpants instead of bathing suit on Israeli beach – media — RT News
A long-awaited trip to the sea has turned into a hefty penalty for a Palestinian factory worker, who went to a beach in Israel for the first time in two decades and got fined for wearing underpants instead of a bathing suit, Haaretz reports.
Hakam Habash decided to go to the Herzl beach in the Israeli city of Netanya since he had a travel permit to be in Israel in day hours during the holy month of Ramadan. After he arrived at the Herzl beach with three friends, the group was eventually asked to show their entry permits by a municipal inspector.
However, it was not the permits that left the men with fines of 730 shekels ($207) each. “The above-mentioned came to the sea without a bathing suit,” says a copy of Habash’s ticket, which also cited “paragraph 99.”

“The complainant was on the beach in underpants and not in regular clothing. Enforcement on the seashore takes place with the aim of preserving public order and the safety and wellbeing of the beach-goers, and we reject any attempt to attribute racist behavior or discrimination to the municipality and its employees,” a spokesperson for the Netanya Municipality told Haaretz in a statement.
Habash, a 36-year-old worker at a jeans manufacturing factory in the West Bank, has four children, the newspaper reports.

“I guess I won’t be able to see the sea again, because I can’t make the payment, unless I use my pension or give up eating and drinking,” said Habash, who earns some 950 shekels a month.
The man claimed that Israelis wearing underpants at the Herzl hadn’t been issued a fine.
“I showed the copy of the fine to Jews I know in Samaria and they were amazed,” he said, while a Tel Aviv beach inspector called the fine “illogical.”

Physical Therapy for a Meniscus Tear | Knee Exercises

There are a number of options for physical therapy, when we"re having a meniscus patient, if it"s torn, if the meniscus is torn, the likelihood of them having it repaired is pretty strong, so the doctor will often provide a protocol-based therapy program after surgery, in the case of surgery.
But if it"s a tear to the meniscus that does not require surgery, the patient wants to try to get on with conservative management or the doctor doesn"t think it"s necessary to do surgery, then there are a few things you have to consider. First of all, the fact that there is a tear in there, you"ve got to be real careful and conservative in the beginning.
We typically use as therapists, an acronym called RICE, which is rest, ice, compression and elevation. Usually these patients have are having a lot of pain and a lot of swelling and those first few days are crucial to turn off some of that pain and swelling. So with the rest, the ice, the compression and the elevation that will really be helpful for a few days. Once there is an improvement in range of motion, once there"s an improvement in the swelling and the pain you"re going to move on to some exercises.
And the first couple of exercises are going to to be trying to start pumping the actual muscles of your knee. So we"re talking about isometric exercises for your quadriceps, isometric exercises for your hamstrings. These are easily done on the floor or in bed and you can be doing these at home. There is no reason to be going to a gym for this. Once you"ve done the isometric exercises, you can then move on to your heel slide, which is an exercise you can do on the floor or in bed as well.
This is a simple bending and straightening exercise, very little friction and very little resistance at all with the exercise. After a few days of doing that, you can then move on to doing these same heel slides, but maybe using your hand to assist and create some over-pressure to the pressure. That stage can last someone between one and three weeks. Somewhere in the middle of that stage though however, you can start to do some biking, some cycling at the gym, as well as doing some leg curls and some leg extension exercises, without any weight and then moving on with some weight.
And then lastly, when you"re dealing with a meniscus tear, you"re going to want to start retraining on functional exercises, like your squats and your lunges and even your split squats. This is a higher level exercise that you want to wait until the end of the recovery process to work on. It really challenges the muscles of your leg to work in a functional manner, because we spend most of our day either getting up from chairs or going down stairs. These exercises really allow the muscles to work functionally.
So it"s a four to six week process whether you are doing it on your own or in a physical therapy office, depending on the level of the injury. And again, if it"s a post-operative person, then usually the doctor will tell us sort of where to go and when, in terms of how to time it and how to proceed and these are the options for a meniscus tear.

How To Open and Prepare a Coconut
Coconut milk is currently one of the food world’s culinary darlings, but in spite of its popularity, cracking the coconut and separating the snow white flesh from its shell can be an intimidating prospect. And once we’ve won the battle with the shell, there’s also the question of how to separate the meat from the tough brown layer it’s attached to.
In spite of how intimidating cracking a coconut can be, with a little kitchen know-how and a few simple tools, it’s not as challenging as it first appears. In addition to how flavorful fresh coconut meat can be, there’s also the added bonus of its high nutritional content.
Coconut is high in fiber, potassium, magnesium, calcium and copper. Coconut water is an efficient way to stay hydrated and may be a way to combat diabetes, kidney stones, and certain forms of cancer.
Coconut water is not the same thing as coconut milk. To prepare coconut milk once you’ve separated the flesh from the shell, blitz it in a blender at high speed with enough filtered water to achieve the consistency you desire. The result is a healthful drink that is perfect for smoothies or enjoyed just as it is.
Here’s how to crack that (coco)nut:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
- Coconut cracking veterans might advise to break open the shell using nothing but a sharp knife and a deft blow, but because of the fruit’s shape and hardness, it’s best to play it safe by using a flathead screwdriver and hammer to get inside. Locate the three “eyes” at the base of the coconut and tap each one with the screwdriver to determine which is the softest.
- Once you’ve located it, place the screwdriver firmly at its center, hold the coconut firmly with one hand, and twist the screwdriver until it’s made its way through the flesh of the coconut. Tap the screwdriver with a hammer a few times if the coconut shell proves too firm.
- Turn the coconut over into a bowl to collect the residual water, reserving it for a nutritious drink later on. Return the screwdriver to the hole and pry the shell open until it splits in half.
- Arrange the shell halves, open-side-up, on a baking sheet and bake for ten minutes. This step will loosen the meat from the shell.
- Once the coconut is cool enough to handle, use the screwdriver or a butter knife to separate the meat from the shell and enjoy.

Stefano Boeri has Designed a Plant-Covered City to Fix China"s Smog Problem
Italian architect Stefano Boeri designed a concept that hopes to eliminate China"s smog problem.
His concept for a vertical forest city would feature nearly 40,000 trees and over 1,000,000 plants to combat air pollution. The greenery is designed to cover skyscrapers, balconies and rooftops. The entire city would span 175 hectares of land along the Liujiang river. Due to its location, the concept is called the "Liuzhou Forest City." The city would be home to some 30,000 residents and would include retail and commercial spaces. Stefano Boeri"s green city would eat up 10,000 tonnes of CO2 and 57 tonnes of pollutants per year while producing 900 tonnes of oxygen. In this green city, the temperature would be cooler and quieter because of the plant and animal life abundant in the area.

Adele confirmed to fans that she may never tour again as she started her final set of world tour gigs in her hometown, London, on Wednesday night.

The singer has spent the last 15 months travelling the globe to places like Australia, New Zealand, North America, and all over Europe. When she performs her fourth and final London date of the trek on Sunday night, she will have completed 123 shows since she started touring her latest album, 25, last year.
But fans who are attending her London concerts at Wembley Stadium over the next few days may be the last to see her perform live, as she left handwritten notes in all of her tour programmes revealing that she may never tour again.
So this is it. After 15 months on the road and 18 months of 25 we are at the end. We have taken this tour across UK + Ireland, throughout Europe, all over America and I finally got to go to Australia and New Zealand too. Touring is a peculiar thing, it doesn"t suit me particularly well. I"m a real homebody and I get so much joy in the small things. Plus I"m dramatic and have a terrible history of touring. Until now that is! I"ve done 119 shows and these last 4 will take me up to 123, it has been hard but an absolute thrill and pleasure to have done. I only ever did this tour for you and to hopefully have an impact on you the way that some of my favourite artists have had on me live. And I wanted my final shows to be in London because I don"t know if I"ll ever tour again and so I want my last time to be at home. Thank you for coming, for all of your ridiculous love and kindness. Stepsister, Yes; Grandma, No: U.S. Sets Guidelines for Revised Travel Ban
The meaning of “bona fide relationship” was not precisely explained, and the phrase has created much uncertainty for migrants and others seeking to travel to the United States from the six countries — Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen — singled out in President Trump’s revised travel ban, issued in March. (An earlier version of the ban included Iraq.)
The Trump administration has now made the definition explicit.
According to a diplomatic cable obtained by The New York Times, “close family” is “defined as a parent (including parent-in-law), spouse, child, adult son or daughter, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, sibling, whether whole or half. This includes step relationships.”
But it went on to state that “close family” does not include “grandparents, grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, brothers-in-laws and sisters-in-law, fiancés and any other ‘extended’ family members.”
It is not clear how the administration arrived at the new definitions. United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, an arm of the Department of Homeland Security, defines “immediate relatives” as spouses, children under 21 and parents of adult citizens.
A bona fide relationship with a “U.S. entity,” according to the cable, “must be formal, documented, and formed in the ordinary course, rather than for the purpose of evading the E.O.,” or executive order.
The new guidelines make clear that someone who has accepted a job offer from a company in the United States or an invitation to deliver a lecture at an American university may enter, but that a nonprofit group may not seek out citizens of the affected countries and count them as clients for the purpose of getting around the ban.
“Also, a hotel reservation, whether or not paid, would not constitute a bona fide relationship with an entity in the United States,” the guidelines note.
Immigration rights advocates who had challenged the travel ban in court said the ruling this week meant the vast majority of people seeking to enter the United States to visit a relative, accept a job, attend a university or deliver a speech would still be able to do so.
But Omar Jadwat, the director of the American Civil Liberties Union’s immigrants’ rights project, said on Thursday the new guidelines troubled him, particularly as they could be read as creating arbitrary definitions of family relationships.
“Initial reports suggest that the government may try to unilaterally expand the scope of the ban — for example, by arbitrarily refusing to treat certain categories of familial relationships as ‘bona fide,’ ” he said. “These reports are deeply concerning.”
If the United States immediately starts enforcing new rules, Mr. Jadwat said, “it means that everybody is going to be in the situation of kind of scrambling to understand whatever they put out, and work through the issues.”

Herrenchiemsee Castle / King Ludwig II's island retreat
King Ludwig II of Bavaria is one of the most colorful characters in German history. Widely regarded as insane, he was certainly a troubled individual and not well suited to the demands of a monarch’s life. Although as a ruler he was neither effective nor well-liked, he is remembered fondly today primarily because of his contributions to the future economy of Germany: his castles, which attract huge numbers of tourists each year. Of the three castles Ludwig had built, Neuschwanstein was the most famous, with its fairy-tale pseudo-medieval design. But even more ambitious was Herrenchiemsee Castle.
Sup-Versailles It
At the foot of the Bavarian Alps lies the Chiemsee, a large lake with a number of islands. To reach the largest island, Herreninsel, you take a ferry from the shore. Hidden from view by trees until you reach the island is what appears to be an exact replica of Versailles. And in fact, that was just what Ludwig was after. He didn’t like the thought of being outdone, and fancied himself as one of the great kings of Europe. So he studied Versailles carefully in order to make his version as close as possible to the original. Herrenchiemsee lacks the two side wings of Versailles, has a somewhat different interior layout, and is located in a much more secluded setting. But the overall design of the architecture—and even the choice of artwork, fabrics, and décor inside—reflects the sensibilities of French royalty.
It is not always apparent from photographs, but Herrenchiemsee was the largest and most lavish castle Ludwig had built. Construction began in 1878, financed by the king’s personal fortune. Like Neuschwanstein, this castle was never completed. Its structure was built in just a few years, but only a fraction of the interior rooms were ever finished. Visitors are uniformly impressed by the ornateness of the furnishings and attention to detail—gold and marble are everywhere you look. Unless, that is, you look very closely. A great many surfaces that appear to be marble are merely painted, and much of the gold is nothing more than a thin leaf over wood. Ludwig was not known for economy, and it is thought that the faux finishes were more a reflection of the design aesthetic of the time, just as wood-veneer plastic was considered very modern a couple of decades ago.
Leave Me Alone, I’m Eating
Ludwig was notoriously shy and reclusive. When possible, he avoided interacting with members of his own government, and though he was an avid fan of music and theater, he always demanded private performances. Such was Ludwig’s passion for privacy that he not only dined alone, but wanted to avoid even seeing kitchen staff before and after meals. (In all likelihood the staff didn’t want to see him either: he reportedly had terrible table manners.) This led to the most talked-about room at Herrenchiemsee: the dining room. Ludwig had an elaborate mechanism designed to lower the dining room table through the floor to the kitchen below so that it could be set and raised into the dining room without any need for the king to encounter human beings. One of the king’s other castles, Linderhof, has a similar arrangement, though at Herrenchiemsee the kitchen is open to tours so you can see the mechanism beneath the table.
According to our tour guide, Herrenchiemsee included one more bathroom than Versailles (for a grand total of one). And it is quite an extraordinary bathroom. The circular tub, if you can call it that, is the size of a small pool. Ludwig was known to be an excellent swimmer, but also, in his later years, quite rotund. So the tub (or pool) may have been designed more for the king’s bathing comfort than for exercise.
Herrenchiemsee shares another historical trait with Neuschwanstein: despite the huge sums of money spent on it and the years it remained under construction, Ludwig never got to enjoy it. He stayed there for a total of just 16 days in 1885. Shortly thereafter, construction was stopped due to a lack of funds. With three major castles simultaneously under construction and no sense of fiscal responsibility, Ludwig had exhausted his considerable resources and gone deeply into debt.
The Decline and Fall of Ludwig II
Even though the castles were not funded with state money, Ludwig’s cabinet was deeply concerned about his expensive obsession. They were concerned for other reasons too. He rarely communicated with his staff or attended to matters of state; he had frequent affairs with young army officers; he appeared to suffer from hallucinations and delusions. But more important than all these issues was the rumor that Ludwig was planning to replace his entire cabinet. In order to remain in power, the cabinet members hatched a secret plan to remove Ludwig from power. They had a detailed report of Ludwig’s troubling behavior compiled and signed by a psychiatrist named Dr. Berhardt von Gudden, even though the doctor had never even met Ludwig at the time. According to Bavarian law, the king could be removed from power only if shown to be incapable of performing his duties, and this report served that purpose. In June of 1886, Ludwig was deposed and arrested.
Just one day later, while still under custody at Berg Castle, Ludwig went for a walk on the castle grounds, escorted by Dr. Gudden. When the two did not return after several hours, a search began, and the bodies of both men were soon found floating in a nearby lake. Official reports called Ludwig’s death a suicide; Gudden, whose forehead was badly injured, was assumed to have been killed by the king before he drowned himself. However, there is considerable evidence to suggest that both men were murdered by the conspirators who removed the king from power—to be sure he never regained it. Yet another theory suggests Ludwig may have killed Gudden and then died while trying to escape by swimming across the lake. Ludwig’s death, like his life, will always be a mystery. —Joe Kissell

We Solemnly Swear We Are Up To No Good: A Harry Potter Bachelorette Party at Universal Orlando
One thing I’ve been hearing from you guys is that you want to hear more about my current travels right after they happen. Well, ask and ye shall receive! I’m jumping in to start sharing some posts from Florida and Tennessee, a trip so fresh I just unpacked from it. This post is brought to you by Universal Orlando Resort.
If there is one wedding trend you will never hear me grumble about, it’s destination bachelorette parties. A chance to get away with a group of my best gal pals? Sign me up! Let’s face it — the opportunities for girlfriend getaways are fewer and far between as time goes on, families get started and responsibilities pile up. So I’m all for making the most of indulgent time away well we can.
Plus, you know I can’t pass up an opportunity to raid the closest arts supply store! If my girl Angie’s Bachelorette Bonanza in Bonaire was any indication, it’s not a Wanderland-stamped bachelorette bash unless it’s replete with crafted and curated goody bags and coordinating outfits.
When I first told our dear family friend Ashlee that I was working with Universal Orlando for the year, she nearly fainted with excitement at the mere thought of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Not long after, she got engaged. My travel-idea wheels started turning, and soon a Harry Potter Bachelorette Party for Ashlee, my sister Olivia and I was born.
Both girls arrived on a Friday afternoon, and we spent a low-key evening enjoying dinner and girly giggles at the Royal Pacific Resort. I’d had a big week at Volcano Bay, and so I was thrilled we were having an early night in to prepare for the big day out ahead!
While we had a few delays in the morning and weren’t the first ones banging down the gates at opening time, we did take advantage of the extra hour of park admission for onsite hotel guests. We were visiting on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, so crowds should have been crushing. But by planning out our route and taking advantage of onsite guest perks, we really did make the most of our visit to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter!
My advice? Check to see which parks have early admission — on this particular day, only Islands of Adventure did. (Remember, Hogsmeade is in Islands of Adventure, while Diagon Alley is in Universal Studios, and they are connected by the Hogwarts Express ride. Thus, a park hopper pass is required to visit both in one day.) So we started our day in Hogsmeade, and rode all three rides there as soon as we arrived, waiting only for Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey — which in retrospect, we totally should have sprinted to first out of the three rides, since it’s the only one that doesn’t accept the Express Passes that we received included in our stay at Royal Pacific.
Harry Potter and the Forbidden Journey is definitely the standout of Hogsmeade, and it truly left me speechless! Dragon Challenge is a traditional crazy coaster that you could ride twice and have two totally different experiences, and the Flight of the Hippogriff is a more family-friendly roller coaster.
Once we had all the rides under out belt, we wandered in and out of the beautifully themed shops, took a million photos, and giggled while Ashlee did spells. While neither Olivia nor I are huge Harry fans — though believe me, it’s growing on me! — we seriously were having a blast and loving how much fun Ashlee was having.
“Is this what it’s like to be parents?,” Olivia mused, as we watched Ash waving her wand around with huge smiles. While I’m normally not much of a souvenir-buyer, wands are an absolute must for the true Potter-head. They allow you to perform spells at mapped locations all over the Wizarding World!
While this was my third trip to Universal Orlando, I had never truly experienced Hogsmeade before, so it really was a blast for me. After a Butterbeer toast to seal the morning, we were off on the Hogwarts Express — which again, thanks to our Express Passes, magically had no line!
And after a whirl on the world’s only inter-theme park ride, we arrived in Diagon Alley! I was so excited to see the girl’s reactions to this truly magical place, one of the greatest themed lands I’ve ever seen in any theme park anywhere in the world.
Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts was down temporarily, so we wandered the alleys doing more spells, splitting an ice cream, and checking out all the fab little shops and details.
Throughout the day, we were overwhelmed with super sweet and sincere compliments from Universal employees on our outfits, and Harry Potter glasses specifically. Considering they’ve seen it all, we were pretty dang proud of ourselves. The best part was, since I’d had to order an eight pack, we had extras to hand out to strangers who asked us about them — so fun!
Next up, it was time for a lunch — and air-conditioning! — break at The Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar in CityWalk. I’d heard raves about this spot and while we were all boring and ordered (super delicious) salads and soda waters, I am totally coming back some night for their craft cocktails and signature Burgushi®.
After lunch, we headed back into Islands of Adventure to hit my favorite area of Universal Orlando… Seuss Landing! The girls humored me with spins on both The Cat in The Hat (which I’d been on before) and theThe High in the Sky Seuss Trolley Train Ride (which I hadn’t.) Neither had more than a two minute line.
Turns out the train ride has some of the best photography vantage points in the entire park — it’s so cool to see it all from above! So whether you’re a Seuss fan or not, if you’re coming with a camera you might just want to hop aboard for a spin.
After, we headed for my favorite ride in the park — Jurassic Park River Adventure. At this point, the late afternoon holiday weekend crowds were at their peak, so we decided to head back to the hotel for a dip in the pool and a nap before the rest of the day.
My big regret of the trip? Not taking the girls on my beloved Hulk coaster and not trying out the two water rides, Dudley Do-Right’s Ripsaw Falls and Popeye and Bluto’s Bilge-Rat Barges, when it was blazing hot! Sure, we could have fit it all in if we’d stayed in the park from open to close, but with a long weekend of fun ahead, we chose to pace ourselves — which is the exact reason I’d recommend travelers invest in at least a three day park-hopper pass so they don’t burn out while trying to enjoy all Universal Orlando Resort has to offer (which is, if you haven’t picked up on it already, a lot.)
Thankfully, by the time the sun set we were well rested for a night on the town — the town, in this case, being Universal’s CityWalk! One of my favorite things about a Universal vacation is you don’t have to get in a car once if you don’t want to.
You can eat, stay, play all in one compact, well-connected resort without fussing with rental cars, cabs, or Ubers. It actually makes it the perfect bachelorette bash port of call — between the security checks into CityWalk, the free water taxis back to the onsite hotels, and the peace of mind of keeping everyone in one place in a big group, you really couldn’t ask for a more worry-free destination for a girl’s night out.
CityWalk is bursting with dining options, which made it hard to narrow down our dinner reservations, though we finally settled on Antojitos for a festive Mexican meal. It did not disappoint! The modern and colorful interiors left us swooning — table for three in a birdcage? yes please! — and the menu left us drooling.
Don’t miss the ginger mojitos or the fresh guacamole made to your specifications right at the table!
After dinner, we rushed back into the park for Harry Potter and the Escape from Gringotts, which we literally sprinted to when I read on the Universal App had reopened! With late summer hours, you really can make the most of your day — and night. Diagon Alley looks totally different at the dark, which made the ride being closed earlier in the day actually feel like a blessing in disguise. We got on what must have been one of the very last runs of the evening, and exited right as the nightly fireworks were going off. Talk about timing.
After, we strolled back into CityWalk ready to dance — and sing. We kicked things off at my personal favorite venue, Rising Star Karaoke, where you can croon with a live backup band and backup dancers. Unfortunately we arrived right as the band went on a lengthy break so the girls didn’t really get to experience Rising Star in all it’s glory, but our friendly waiter conceded that on a busy weekend you really need to arrive at opening to have a good chance of singing, anyway.
After a few drinks and sing-alongs, we were off to check out CityWalk’s two nightclubs, The Groove and Red Coconut Club. As very dedicated researchers, we did a thorough comparison of both — and while the dancefloors were packed and we had a blast at each, Red Coconut won out as our favorite for the retro kitsch decor (The Groove was more general-Myrtle-Beach-nightclub in comparison.) Both were totally unpretentious, with an all-age crowd all just looking to have a good time. And if you’re staying onsite, you’ll get free entry to every CityWalk venue by showing your room key — so why not check out both?
Not so much for the club scene? There are also some great bars in CityWalk — Bob Marley–A Tribute to Freedom has great live music (and Jamaican specialities on the dinner menu), Pat O’Brien’s boasts dueling pianos (and cajun food), and Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville has, well, a margarita-filled erupting volcano (and cheeseburgers in paradise, duh).
CityWalk’s last call is 2am, but make sure you close out your tab a bit earlier to grab late night slices at the Red Over Pizza Bakery. We took them to-go and hopped on the last water taxi of the night back to Royal Pacific, which turned out to be one of my favorite moments of my entire eight days in Orlando. Why?
When we boarded the boat, I noted that the professional young captain was a girl around our age. The only other group on the boat was another crew of ladies coming back from a big night out. As we pulled away from the dock, the captain wordlessly turned on a speaker and started blasting Madonna’s classic hit Lucky Star. When she started busting some serious dance moves at the wheel, we excitedly began belting backup from out seats. We might not have made it onstage at Rising Star, but the boat become our grandstand, the seven of us aboard rocking out for a one-song headline.
When we docked, we laughed and thanked our lovely captain for an unimaginably perfect ride home. “Well, I figured it was just us girls,” she said with a wink.
Just us girls indeed! It was the perfect day at the parks, and a bachelorette for the books.
