Adding Colour to Magnetic Ferrofluid Makes for Nightmarish Results

Other than looking pretty neat and being fascinating to watch there aren"t all that many practical uses for ferrofluid. A mixture of oil and iron particles that can be manipulated using magnets. Ferrofluid does however make for some pretty neat desktop ornaments and it also just so happens to be pretty fun to film. But what happens when you drop a little a bit of colour into the mix?
Typically a dark black substance adding colour to ferrofluid doesn"t make it look any less menacing as it shifts and changes shape - if anything it makes it look even more intimidating, as shown in these fascinating experiments from YouTube’s Chemical bouillon. We don"t know about you but we could watch this stuff for hours.

Cucumber Soup

Every year I plant cucumbers in my garden. And every year, my one plant takes over the bed (climbing over trellises put in place for other vegetables) and showers me with a daily supply of lovely cucumbers.
This is all well and good, as long as I remember to pick them daily. As careful as I can be, hunting for cucumbers in the tangle of leaves and vines, I do miss them occasionally, only to discover a monster cuke hiding perfectly camouflaged under a leaf.
Like zucchini, left to their own devices, cucumbers will grow to ginormous proportions, resulting in a thick-skinned, seedy bat.
What do do with extra large cucumbers?
Make cucumber soup!

How Are Jon and Daenerys Related on Game of Thrones?
Finally, after many seasons of speculation, Game of Thrones confirmed R + L = J in the season six finale, and then in the season seven finale, we learn that Jon is legitimate. Jon Snow is the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen, making him Ned Stark"s nephew, not his son. This is a tragedy on many different levels — the first and most obvious being that Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen are related, so if they end up married, it"ll be weird because they are related. Rhaegar Targaryen is Daenerys"s oldest brother, making Jon Snow her nephew and therefore heir to the Targaryen throne. On the other hand, incest is still very prevalent among Westerosi royals and the Targaryens, so the fact that Jon and Daenerys just had sex on the show will complicate things when Jon finally finds out who he really is.

Awhile ago, I showed you how to make slime with Borax. In this video, I"ll show you another recipe you can use, along with more things you can add to it!
DIY SLIME (with Borax):
http://bit.ly/YU3QqS
Ingredients:
• Liquid starch (Sta-Flo, 1/2 cup)
• Elmer"s glue (4 or 5 oz. bottle, clear or white)
• Water (1/4 cup)
• Additions:
- Food color
- Glow in the dark paint
- Glitter
- Wiggle eyes, toy critters
Supplies:
• Bowl
• Measuring cups
• Plastic bag
WHERE TO BUY STA-FLO (US):
http://www.purex.com/store-locator
Look in the aisle with the laundry detergent, fabric softener, and spray starch.
..............................................
BORAX RECIPE:
Find it here — http://bit.ly/YU3QqS
WHERE TO BUY BORAX (US):
http://www.20muleteamlaundry.com/store-locator
..............................................
ALTERNATIVE RECIPES:
If you live outside of the US, look for other brand products that say "detergent booster" or "liquid starch", those may work as a substitute.
I think detergent booster (Borax) and liquid starch (Sta-Flo) have the best results and make slime that is easier to handle. Corn starch recipes didn"t have the same consistency and didn"t work for me. If you have any other recipes, feel free to include them in the comments.
Liquid laundry detergent will work, but only for white glue. This is not my favorite recipe because it makes a sticky slime, but if you absolutely can"t find any of the other ingredients and you really want to make slime, it"s an option:
• Liquid laundry detergent (1/4 cup)
• Elmer"s glue (4 oz. bottle, white)
• Water (1/4 cup)

Behind the ‘zines: Lonely Planet Traveller’s September issue
The September issue of Lonely Planet Traveller magazine UK is hot off the press and packed with inspiration for late summer adventures. This month we reveal France’s best-kept secret spots, take a road trip through the Great Lakes, explore southeast Asia by boat and hunt down the coolest places in London. Take a look behind the scenes as we share stories and photography tips from a few of this month’s features.

With 119 buildings clocking in at 150 metres or higher, Chicago has one of the world’s most epic skylines © Aubrie Pick / Lonely Planet
Chicago, USA
Photographer Aubrie Pick explored Chicago, birthplace of the skyscraper, for our ultimate Great Lakes road trip.
‘I took this photo aboard the Chicago Architecture Foundation River Cruise as it made its way up the Chicago River. I loved the way the blue of the sky reflected in the glass of the skyscrapers, which then reflected in the water. It was a tricky shot, because being low in the water with the buildings so high ran the risk of parallax, an effect where objects appear to veer together. To counteract this, I tried not to shoot up and instead kept my camera level with the horizon.’

Champasak, Laos
Voyaging through Laos on the mighty Mekong river, writer Oliver Berry watched the sun set over rice fields near the temple complex of Wat Phu.
‘Rice is a hugely important crop in Laos, and there are paddies all along the banks of the Mekong. We’d spent the afternoon at the temple and later got chatting to a local farmer and his family who were listening to Laotian pop music and relaxing in the evening sunshine. In the distance you can just make out a sacred mountain topped by a dome-shaped rock known as a linga, for local Buddhists and Hindus a holy symbol of Shiva.’

London, England
Acting Features Editor Jess Cole met fish smoker Max in east London while researching our feature on the new makers, producers and creatives making waves across the city.
‘I love the glow of pride that radiates from this photo. Max smokes fish to a secret recipe in an arch near London Fields – so secret, in fact, that he explained to us apologetically that photography was strictly banned inside the smokehouse itself, in case it inadvertently betrayed his unique methods or recipe to any budding rivals! We didn’t mind: the brickwork right outside was the perfect backdrop to match the gritty railway arch theme of our feature.’

These stilt houses on the outskirts of Castro are typical of Chiloé’s wooden architecture © Philip Lee Harvey / Lonely Planet
Chiloé Archipelago, Chile
In this month’s photo story, Philip Lee Harvey focuses his lens on the unique timber architecture and seafaring traditions of Chiloé in Chilean Patagonia. He tells us how he got this shot of capital Castro:
‘Palafitos, or stilt houses, have become a symbol of Chiloé. Originally built as fisherman’s cottages and places to store the catch, many are now hotels and restaurants, as well as homes. The weather in Chiloe is extremely unpredictable and can change in seconds. On my third visit to this view, I got lucky – after a very wet day, the sun appeared. Minutes later the clouds returned and the scene lost its magic. Perseverance and luck – the basis of any photographic career’.

UPDATE 1-Officer Shot to Death in California, 2 Others Wounded
A man with a high-powered rifle fatally shot a policeman at a hotel in Sacramento, California, during a car theft investigation, and two other officers were wounded by gunfire on Wednesday at the same location, officials said.
Officers searching for a suspect in a car theft case were knocking at the door of a room in a Ramada Inn when someone inside fired through the door and walls, wounding two California Highway Patrol officers, Sacramento County Sheriff"s Department spokesman Tony Turnbull told reporters.
Law enforcement officers swarmed the area after the shooting. As they approached, a man exchanged gunfire with police from a rear balcony of the room, Turnbull said.
Sacramento County Sheriff"s Deputy Robert French, a 52-year-old grandfather, was shot by the suspect and later died as he was being rushed to a hospital, Sacramento Sheriff Scott Jones told reporters.
The two California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers are hospitalized in stable condition.
It was not immediately clear if the gunman who opened fire from the balcony was the same person who earlier shot through the door and walls at the CHP officers from inside the room.
The suspected balcony gunman, after exchanging gunfire with officers, got into a car and drove away from the Ramada Inn, with police in pursuit, Turnbull said.
He later crashed the car and again exchanged fire with police before he was struck by gunfire and arrested, Turnbull said. Police did not identify him.
Law enforcement officers have converged on the Ramada Inn and evacuated people from the hotel, as they seek to determine whether any other suspects are inside the room where the gunfire broke out or somewhere else on the premises, Turnbull said.
Two women who were suspected of being involved in the car theft were arrested before the gunfire broke out, Turnbull said. The women, who were not identified either, were taken into custody after a separate vehicle chase.

You Can Feel Like a Kid Again With This '90s Candy From Amazon Prime

As everyone around me gears up to head back to school for the year, I"m reminded of the days - in the "90s - when I was also headed back to school, with my lunch all packed and hopefully a sweet treat inside my lunch box. You see, I"m an "80s baby, so candy in the 1990s was my everything.
I loved Laffy Taffy and Bubble Tape, and it comes as absolutely no surprise to me that I can still find all those "90s gems online today. Thank heaven for Amazon Prime making life a little easier. Amazon stocks all of my favorites that can be delivered to my doorstep in a mere day or two, and I highly recommend all my fellow "80s children start shopping for their favorites right now as well. Even though we"re officially adults now, we can still feel like kids at heart with some Warheads and Nerds, right?

Qantas Is Cutting Dubai Flights, Changing Up Partnership With Emirates
Five years ago Emirates and Qantas formed a joint venture, which has been wildly successful for both airlines. At the time Qantas flew from both Melbourne and Sydney to London via Singapore.
When the joint venture was formed, Qantas began operating their London flights via Dubai instead.
This was brilliant, as it allowed all kinds of new one-stop routings from Australia to destinations in Europe other than London, given Emirates’ extensive route network. For example, previously if you wanted to fly from Sydney to Prague on Qantas you’d have to fly from Sydney to Dubai to London to Prague. Under the joint venture, the same passenger could fly from Sydney to Dubai to Prague.
On top of that, Emirates has a huge fleet of A380s, while Qantas’ fleet is quite small, so their independent growth potential was limited. Qantas has had some of their best financial results in history the past few years, and their joint venture with Emirates is at least partly to thank for that.
So I was a bit surprised today to see that Qantas is cutting their flights to Dubai altogether. But there’s more to this change than meets the eye.
Qantas was already going to change their route network
We already knew before today’s announcement that Qantas is in the process of changing up their longhaul route network. Qantas is about to start taking delivery of their first of eight Boeing 787 aircraft, which will make some new routes possible. Next March Qantas plans on commencing nonstop flights between Perth and London, and at that point they plan on cutting their Melbourne to Dubai to London flight.
This makes sense, especially as it will allow them to refresh their A380s in 2019. At that point the only Qantas flight to Dubai would be their Sydney to London service. But today some more serious changes were announced.
Qantas is cutting Dubai service altogether
As of March 25, 2018, Qantas will no longer operate their Sydney to Dubai to London flight. They’ll instead replace it with a Sydney to Singapore to London flight, which is identical to what they offered prior to the Emirates and Qantas joint venture.
On top of that, Qantas will upgrade the Singapore to Melbourne flight from an A330 to an A380. In other words, passengers can fly from Sydney or Melbourne to London via Singapore on A380s the whole way.
On the surface it sounds like there’s trouble with the Emirates and Qantas joint venture, eh? Not so much, apparently.
Emirates and Qantas have renewed their joint venture for five more years
Qantas put out a press release about their joint venture with Emirates, which they plan to renew for five more years. So why is Qantas cutting flights to Dubai while the two airlines are claiming that the partnership is as strong as it has ever been?
I’ll let Qantas’ CEO, Alan Joyce, explain:
“The first five years of the Qantas-Emirates alliance has been a great success. Emirates has given Qantas customers an unbeatable network into Europe that is still growing. We want to keep leveraging this strength and offer additional travel options on Qantas, particularly through Asia.
“Our partnership has evolved to a point where Qantas no longer needs to fly its own aircraft through Dubai, and that means we can redirect some of our A380 flying into Singapore and meet the strong demand we’re seeing in Asia.
“Improvements in aircraft technology mean the Qantas network will eventually feature a handful of direct routes between Australia and Europe, but this will never overtake the sheer number of destinations served by Emirates and that’s why Dubai will remain an important hub for our customers.”
The way joint ventures are structured, airlines have a revenue sharing agreement where all airlines get some revenue, even if they’re not actually operting the route. The reality is that Emirates can offer almost unlimited capacity, so Qantas isn’t really adding all that much value by duplicating Emirates’ routes from Melbourne and Sydney to Dubai, and from Dubai to London.
Qantas’ small fleet would be much better utilized in other markets to give passengers more options. As you can see above, long term Qantas would look to offer a handful of direct flights from Australia to Europe, maybe a route or two via Asia, and then they’ll leave the rest to Emirates.
Qantas estimates that these changes will provide an annualized net benefit of 80 million AUD starting in 2019. Interestingly those direct flights to Europe, as well as the flight via Singapore, won’t be part of the joint venture with Emirates, so Emirates stands nothing to gain there. Instead their gains would likely come from their increased service between Australia and Dubai.
Bottom line
Ultimately we don’t know exactly how the joint venture between Emirates and Qantas is structured. However, the idea here makes sense. Emirates has a huge fleet while Qantas has a fairly small longhaul fleet. With Emirates more than capable of covering routes between Australia and Dubai, Qantas can focus on other routes that are potentially high yield, presumably while taking a cut on the Emirates flights.
It’s an interesting move that at first seemed counterintuitive, but I can see how it makes sense.
To those who have taken Qantas’ flight from Australia to Europe, do you prefer the Dubai or Singapore stopover?
(Tip of the hat to SINJim)

The gap between India’s richer and poorer states is widening
COUNTRIES find it easier to get rich once their neighbours already are. East Asia’s growth pattern has for decades been likened to a skein of geese, from Japan at the vanguard to laggards such as Myanmar at the rear. The same pattern can often be seen within big countries: over the past decade, for example, China’s poorer provinces have grown faster than their wealthier peers. India is different. Far from converging, its states are getting ever more unequal. A recent shake-up in the tax system might even make matters worse.
Bar a few Mumbai penthouses and Bangalore startup offices, all parts of India are relatively poor by global standards. Taken together, its 1.3bn people make up roughly the third and fourth decile of the world’s population, with an income per head (adjusted for purchasing power) of $6,600 dollars. But that average conceals a vast gap. In Kerala, a southern state, the average resident has an annual income per head of $9,300, higher than Ukraine, and not...Continue reading

Corinne Olympios Says She Doesn"t Blame DeMario Jackson For The "Bachelor In Paradise" Incident
On Tuesday night, ABC interrupted the dating doings of Bachelor in Paradise to air host Chris Harrison"s interview with Corinne Olympios, who, nearly three months ago, was at the center of a sexual incident on the first day of filming that turned into a major news event. Two Bachelor in Paradise producers submitted complaints to Warner Bros., the studio that produces the Bachelor franchise for ABC, about Olympios" sexual encounter with fellow contestant DeMario Jackson. As a result, production was shut down. Though the complaints never became public, the subsequent Warner Bros. investigation, which ended up determining that no impropriety had taken place, clearly focused on whether Olympios had been too inebriated to consent to sex.
Last Tuesday"s episode of Bachelor in Paradise featured Harrison"s talk with Jackson, but since Jackson had already spoken with E! News in late June, there was little new in the discussion. Olympios, however, has remained silent until now, other than issuing statements through her publicist, the first of which stoked media coverage when she referred to herself as a "victim" who had "little memory" of what had happened between her and Jackson.
When Bachelor in Paradise resumed filming, neither Olympios nor Jackson rejoined the cast, but both agreed to appear during the season to sit down with Harrison. (As far as whether either of them was financially compensated to do so, or was paid off in any way, a spokesperson for Warner Bros. declined to comment.) In the interview with Harrison, Olympios repeated that she didn"t "remember much of" that first day of filming. She "definitely over-drank," and she said she had recently begun a new medication that does not mix with alcohol. When Harrison pointed out that she seemed like "normal Corinne," she agreed. "Yeah. Like, it can look like you"re totally present and you"re totally there, and your mind is just not anywhere near," she said. "I mean, it impairs your judgment." (Olympios did not name the medication.)
When Harrison asked Olympios how she felt about Jackson on Day 2 of production, she said things were fine. And then he asked — and this question was teased relentlessly while promoting the interview — as to whether she feels Jackson did anything wrong. No, Olympios said she doesn"t. "I mean, there"s no way for you guys to know that, like, she"s, like, mentally checked out," she said, referring to herself in the third person. "Like, Corinne is not here right now. You know? Which is beyond scary, but, you know, just — it is what it is, I guess. I don"t think it"s anyone"s fault."
Olympios did say that she had been angry with Jackson for going to the media first — presumably referring to the E! interview — before she had a chance to "gather my thoughts and collect myself." And why did she think he did that, Harrison asked. Her answer symbolizes the muddle of this interview: "I can"t help but feel like maybe he felt like I thought that he did something to me," Olympios said.
Harrison emphasized throughout the conversation that Jackson — who was vilified on The Bachelorette, and impugned further because of the allegations — had a terrible time of it. Olympios was shown a clip of Harrison"s interview with Jackson in which he cried. "I mean, it was hard for me to go through something like that, too," she said. As for what she wants people to know, Olympios said, "I really just want people to know that I don"t blame DeMario. I never pointed fingers at DeMario. I never said a bad word about DeMario." The interview closed with Harrison thanking her for her candor, and Olympios thanking "everybody that did support me."
Missing from the interview were any specifics about why the shutdown occurred, and how it was carried out by producers. Harrison also did not say that because of this incident between Olympios and Jackson, not only have the drinking rules on the show been changed, but so have the rules about medications. (According to TMZ, they now need to be dispensed by a nurse.) And though Harrison carried on a conversation about consent with the returning cast of Bachelor in Paradise in the Season 4 premiere, he didn"t discuss the issue with Olympios, who had just told him she can"t remember her sexual encounter with Jackson.
Olympios"s interview was the final chapter of the Bachelor in Paradise scandal and it played out the same way it did on television — with exploitative teases, and a frustrating hollowness.

25 Awesome Things to Do in Thailand
There are so many things to do in Thailand, you could spend a lifetime there and just barely scratch the surface. It is a dream destination for many travelers, and for good reason. The Kingdom of Smiles checks so many boxes that make it an excellent destination for all types of travelers.
You’ll find bustling cities, sandy beaches, lush jungles, and ruins of ancient kingdoms. The cuisine is some of the best in the world, and the nightlife is the stuff of legends. Your money goes far here, ensuring a great trip without breaking the bank.
The only problem with planning a trip to Thailand is that there are so many things to do. To make your life a bit easier and to show you just how awesome a country it is, here are 25 things to do in Thailand.
1. Temple Hopping in Bangkok
Let’s start out with the most sacred site in the entire country. Wat Phra Kaew, also known as the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, is the grandest and most important temple in Thailand. It’s believed that the Emerald Buddha was found after lightning struck a temple in Chiang Rai way back in 1434.
The sacred figurine had quite the journey over the centuries, eventually ending up in the newly constructed temple in Bangkok in 1784. Only the King of Thailand can touch the image, and he does so three times a year during important ceremonies.

In addition to Wat Phra Kaew, you should also be sure to check out Wat Pho (Temple of the Reclining Buddha) and Wat Arun (Temple of the Dawn). It’s easy to visit all three in one busy day if you’re motivated. Take a lunch break down by the Chao Phraya River to break it up in the middle, and then relax in the large Sanam Luang park when you’re all finished.
2. Ride the 1,864 Curves of the Mae Hong Son Loop
If it’s an adventure that you seek, head to the north and rent some wheels to tackle this famed loop. It’s said that there are 1,864 curves in the road that takes you from Chiang Mai through a few other towns and back, but you’ll probably lose track trying to count them. Along the way, you can stop off in a national park and scenic small towns for hiking, hot springs, caves, and so much more.
It’s possible to travel the MHS loop by public transport, but just be ready for locals who can’t handle the many curves to be constantly losing their lunch. You’re much better off riding your own bike, as intimidating as the roads may be. Bikes and maps are readily available in Chiang Mai. This is definitely one of the coolest things to do in Thailand!
3. Party on Ko Pha-Ngan
You’ve probably heard of the Full Moon Party that goes down every month, but that’s not the only shindig on this Thai island. In addition to the monthly lunacy of Full Moon, there’s also the Jungle Experience. It’s a much smaller, chilled out affair, but it’s tons of fun. Where else will you watch a DJ spin out of a neon-lit cheetah head?
The island also hosts half and new moon gatherings and a waterfall party, so if you stay for a few days you’ll probably catch one. Of course, you’ll also find a wide range of bars around the island for those nights when a party isn’t going on.
4. Jungle Trekking
While traveling in the north, you’ve got plenty of options for great multi-day treks into the jungle. On a 3-day trip out of Chiang Mai, you can swim in waterfalls, hike to epic temples, sleep in remote villages, and do a bit of cliff diving.

You’ll also learn a lot about the Thai jungle and the plants and animals that call it home. It’s a great break from the busy tourist centers and a chance to disconnect from the modern world for a short while.
5. Chatuchak Weekend Market
Shopping is one of the top things to do in Thailand. This Bangkok market is the largest in the country and one of the biggest in the world. It’s like being inside the Internet, as you can literally find everything here. There are thousands upon thousands of stalls that are supposedly organized into 27 categories. It’s also quite popular, attracting over 200,000 visitors a day.
Wandering around the maze-like structure, you’re sure to get lost. That’s half the fun, though! Bring your camera and your best bargaining skills and you’ll have an awesome time. I personally hate shopping and absolutely love visiting Chatuchak.
6. Fall in Love With Pai
Whether or not you ride the Mae Hong Son loop, you should definitely pay a visit to the town of Pai. This little hippie town is in a beautiful corner of Thailand with lots to do. You can play in waterfalls, hike in a canyon, and soak in hot springs all within a half-hour motorbike ride.
Back in town, there’s an awesome night market, several art galleries, great cafes, and plenty of bars for some fun after dark. Check to see if the monthly art & music party is going on when you visit, it’s tons of fun.
7. Eat All the Foods
One of the best things to do in Thailand is sample the local cuisine. There’s a reason why Thai food is famous all around the world, and there’s nothing like the real thing. Whether it’s khao soi from a street vendor or a fancy Bangkok restaurant, it’s all mouth-wateringly delicious.

8. Scuba Dive on Ko Tao
If you’re not already scuba certified, the island of Ko Tao is one of the best places in the world to get certified. There are tons of dive centers here offering a wide range of courses, and the competition ensures good quality and low prices.
Unlike other places where you’ll train in a pool, you can actually get out in the ocean to practice the basics here. After a few days, you’ll have your certificate in hand and be ready to explore the other 70% of the planet.
9. Watch a Ladyboy Cabaret Show
There are a lot of shows you can see in Thailand. Some of them are classy, while some are anything but. A ladyboy cabaret show falls somewhere in the middle. At the very least, it’s a good time and one of the more unique things to do in Thailand. Plus, it makes for a good story when you get back home.
10. Get Wet and Wild During Songkran
Thai people like to have a good time, plain and simple. If something is not sanuk (fun), then it’s not worth doing. This attitude really shines through during Songkran, the Thai New Year. Joining in the party is hands down one of the best things to do in Thailand.

While the first two days are about visiting family, going to temples, and making merit, the third day is a massive water fight and a raging party. It happens every year from April 13-15, with the biggest celebrations taking place in Bangkok and Chiang Mai.
11. Participate in a Buddhist Holiday
In Thailand, around 95% of the population is Buddhist. To understand the importance of Buddhism in Thai culture, try to be in the country during one of the major Buddhist holidays. There are several throughout the year, so be sure to check the calendar.
Join the crowds and head to the biggest temple wherever you are. Thai people are very welcoming and are happy to have you there. Just be sure to dress and act appropriately. No flip-flops and singlets in the temple, folks.
12. Go Rock Climbing in Railay
The province of Krabi is home to tons of majestic karst mountains. The beach towns of Railay and Tonsai are somewhat of a climbing Mecca, with hundreds of routes to choose from. If you’re a beginner, there are schools where you can train using a wall first.
When it comes to choosing where to stay over here, Railay is a bit more upscale and touristy. Tonsai is a backpacker hotspot with plenty of budget accommodation so you can spend more money on enjoying the climbing.
13. Visit the Heaven and Hell of Architecture
Near the northern city of Chiang Rai, you can visit heaven and hell in a single day. First up is the White Temple, which is the brainchild of a famous Thai artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. There are thousands of temples in Thailand, but none quite like this one. Come here to see how Neo from “The Matrix,” Hello Kitty, and George W. Bush fit into a Buddhist temple.

On the other side of town, you’ll find the Black House. Built by another artist (the late Thawan Duchanee), this complex is now a museum of his various collections. We’re not talking about Persian rugs and fine China here. Instead, you’ll see plenty of animal fur, skins, bones, and teeth. It’s creepy, but awesome.
14. Try a Fish Spa
Ever wondered what it feels like to have hundreds of tiny fish eat all the dead skin off your feet? You’re in luck, because so-called “fish spas” are plentiful in Thailand. Grab an ice cold Chang beer and enjoy the silly experience. On the one occasion where I tried it, I couldn’t stop laughing the entire time.
15. See or Train in Muay Thai
Martial arts are a big deal in Asia. China has kung-fu, Japan has karate, and Thailand has Muay Thai. This style of kickboxing is Thailand’s national sport, and it has been around for thousands of years. It’s often called the “Science of Eight Limbs” because of the many ways you can attack.
There are plenty of places to catch an evening of Muay Thai bouts around the country. You can even join a program to train in Muay Thai if you’re looking to get in the ring. It’s one way to work off all that pad Thai and mango with sticky rice you’ve eaten.
16. Explore Ko Tarutao National Park
Thailand is such a popular destination that it’s hard to imagine there are still places where you can find a totally empty beach. Welcome to Ko Tarutao National Park! This island in the far south was once a prison (crocodiles and sharks ensured prisoners didn’t try to escape), but it’s now a hotspot for adventure.

Spend a few days here cycling, hiking, and spotting wildlife. You can also take a boat ride through the mangroves to explore a cave. It’s the best place to have a Robinson Crusoe-esque trip in Thailand.
17. Cycle Around an Ancient Kingdom
History and culture buffs should be sure to include a visit to one of Thailand’s two ancient kingdoms on their itinerary. You can choose between Ayutthaya or Sukhothai, or just check out both! Rent a bicycle and spend a day cycling around the ruins of once grand palaces and temples.
It’s possible to do Ayutthaya on a day trip from Bangkok, but you’ll probably want to spend at least a night in the area if you choose to visit Sukhothai. Whichever you choose, this is one of the best things to do in Thailand.
18. Take a Cooking Class
After eating nothing but delicious, authentic Thai food, it will be hard to go back to your bland old comfort food. Why not take a cooking class and learn how to make classic Thai dishes yourself?
In tourist hubs like Phuket and Chiang Mai, you’ve got tons of options for a culinary course. Learn to whip up some papaya salad or Massaman curry and throw a Thai dinner party when you get home.
19. Stay in a Luxury Villa
Hostels are great and all, but sometimes you just need to feel like you’re on vacation. Thanks to sites like Airbnb and VRBO, it’s possible to rent your very own luxury villa on the Thai islands for about the same price as a night in a major hotel chain.
Grab a bottle of Sangsom rum and a coconut to fix up my personal favorite vacation beverage, a coco-rum-onut. Sit back, relax, and enjoy your own private pool with a good book. Save the dorm rooms for the cities.
20. Volunteer at an Elephant Sanctuary
Elephants are an important part of Thai culture. They even named their most famous beer after them! Enjoy a great day out while helping to protect these magnificent creatures by volunteering at an elephant sanctuary for the day.

Unfortunately, many of the tourist focussed elephant camps in Thailand have extremely poor records of animal welfare, and elephant rides and shows are still relatively common. However, by visiting an elephant sanctuary you’ll get to see these beautiful beasts up close while bathing and feeding them, and be lending a helping hand to the preservation efforts at the same time.
21. Poi Show + Buckets
If you’re traveling on a Thai island, chances are you’ll end up at a bar that serves drinks in beach buckets and has a fire-spinning poi show. Sure, it’s a bit cliched at this point, but when in Rome, right? You never know when you’ll catch a poi spinner who absolutely blows your mind, and it’s a fun night out either way.
22. Fly Through the Jungle
For an action-packed, adrenaline-fueled day, try one of the zipline courses outside of Chiang Mai. You’ll spend a few hours flying through the jungle on various ziplines, walking across sky bridges or abseiling between them. Chances are you’ll also get hilarious guides who show off their fearlessness on the course.
23. Ride in a Tuk-Tuk
No trip to Thailand would be complete without a tuk-tuk ride. These colorful three-wheeled taxis are ubiquitous in Bangkok, and they make for quite the thrill ride. Be sure to bargain on the fare, and then hold on for dear life as you zip through the city’s intense traffic.

It’s also possible to arrange for a tuk-tuk driver to take you on a tour. Hiring one driver for a day or a few hours is a great way to pack a lot of sightseeing into a short time period, and it’s the most uniquely Thai way to travel around.
24. Experience Bangkok’s Nightlife
For night owls, there’s no place quite like BKK. Pound cheap drinks with other backpackers on the infamous Khao San Road. Sip craft cocktails on a fancy rooftop. Hang out with expats at the popular Cheap Charlie’s before taking in some live music at Bangkok Beat. Order a beer from an old VW microbus that’s been converted into a bar. The world is your oyster come nightfall in Bangkok.
25. Take the Slow Boat to Laos
When your Thailand trip comes to a close, why not keep the journey rolling into neighboring Laos? The 2-day slow boat ride along the mighty Mekong River is incredibly scenic and sure beats cramming onto a budget airline. Cruise into Luang Prabang and start a whole new adventure.
We’re just getting started with all the incredible things to do in Thailand. There’s so much going on here that you’ll definitely want to maximize your stay. Many nationalities are granted 30 days on arrival, so why not just go ahead and spend an awesome month in Thailand? Chances are you’ll be left wanting more even if you do that, as Thailand is the travel gift that keeps on giving.
