The Ad-Free "Vero" Puts Users in Control of Their Sharing Experience

"Vero," meaning "truth," aims to set itself apart as a "revolutionary social network" and it is one that is challenging popular platforms by addressing common user concerns.

The app aims to make the experience of "sharing online more like real life" by offering ways for people to express their love of movies, books and photos in authentic ways. As well, the platform serves as a place for people to make purchases and listen to music without having to leave the app.

Users on Vero have the chance to organize their contacts by close friends, friends and acquaintances, ultimately giving them the power to control the content they share and who sees it. The app features no advertisements, algorithms and doesn"t mine data from its users, making it an alluring network for savvy social media users.

Show Creator Says Amazon Told Her To "Tone It Down" About Politics On Twitter

The tweet was in support of the campaign to get businesses to cut ties with the National Rifle Association (NRA) after the Parkland, Florida, school shooting that left 17 people dead. Amazon streams NRATV, the pro-gun lobbying group"s online channel. (Apple and YouTube also carry it.)

Danger & Eggs, which Petosky created with Mike Owens, was picked up to series after being among Amazon"s pilots in late 2015. Speaking with BuzzFeed News on Tuesday, Petosky said that as they started to work on the show in 2016, she was called in to a meeting with two Amazon executives, Aaron Davidson and Melissa Wolfe.

Petosky said they told her a potential writer for Danger & Eggs (whom she would not name) had told them that she "couldn"t be funny based on a deep-dive of my Twitter feed." The executives also her told not to talk about politics on social media, Petosky said.

"They said that I needed to tone it down, that I needed to watch it," she said. "It wasn"t becoming of someone running one of their shows."

Petosky, who is transgender, had tweeted about the appropriate use of pronouns.

"I forget the tweet," she said, "but it was something like: Pronouns aren"t that hard, just figure it out."

She had also been the subject of international news stories in September 2015 after a run-in with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) caused her to miss a flight from Orlando to Minneapolis, an incident that drew attention to the invasive and demeaning ways trans people are dealt with during airport security screenings. Petosky"s story had gone viral because of her tweets about it.

In the aftermath, she said, "I was being very political about the TSA and my experience." That was what Amazon wanted her to "tone down," she added.

According to Petosky, Wolfe asked her how she would feel if someone were posting "pro-Trump messages."

"She used that as an example," Petosky said. "It was a very condescending meeting. But I wanted to play ball, and I wanted to be a good showrunner, so I went with it."

She then deleted a number of tweets.

Amazon Studios did not respond to requests for comment.

Petosky said she was moved to reveal her experience with Amazon because "she felt like there was a little bit of a connection" between how she was treated and the company"s politics.

"I saw the thing about Amazon and the NRA, I was thinking about how their politics affect me," she said.

Petosky added that she grew up in Montana around guns, "but with kids being killed in schools, we really have to do something."

"The head of Amazon did a pro-Trump tweet!" Petosky said. "It made me angry. I"ve been pretty frustrated that I was kind of singled out to not be political. I"ve been very frustrated with being asked to tone down my politics and feminism and transfeminism online."

Amazon Studios has been in limbo since the ouster of Roy Price in the wake of sexual harassment allegations — only recently has Jennifer Salke, formerly of NBC, been hired to take his place. As a result of the company"s purgatory, Danger & Eggs — which has been nominated for several awards and received praise for its representation of LGBT characters — has also been in a state of uncertainty since its premiere in late June.

"We"re just completely in limbo," Petosky said. "We lost our crew. There doesn"t seem to be that much concern or enthusiasm. It just slipped through the cracks."

The show"s fate is up to the new executive team, Petosky said.

"I don"t want to be canceled, but I"ll probably be canceled after this," she said.

Petosky is now working on Twelve Forever for Netflix.

Steep a Fresh, Fuss-Free Cup of Ginger Tea

Steeping ginger tea at home is a practically effortless process, since it only calls for two ingredients: sliced ginger root and hot water. There"s no need to buy prepackaged, dry ginger tea when you can make the fresh, fuss-free version. While you can scrape the skin off the ginger with a spoon if you"d like, I leave the root as is and rely on a fine mesh tea filter to prevent the papery ginger skins from getting into the tea. Talk about easy!

When is the right time to drink ginger tea? Consider ginger the anytime tea for any ailment, whether it"s a cold, stomachache, migraines, or general fatigue. Drinking ginger tea at once invigorates like a strong cup of coffee and soothes like a lavender salt bath.

Here"s a quick tip in terms of buying ginger: if you have access to Asian markets, then buy your ginger there. The ginger will be plump and fresh from the high turnaround, and it will be sold at a fraction of the price. This large piece would have cost me upward of $5 at an organic supermarket, but it only cost me 50 cents at my local Chinese grocer.

Ready to warm up to your own cup of ginger tea?

Fresh Ginger Tea

From POPSUGAR Food

Notes

If you"re looking for a spicier ginger tea, then steep the ginger in the tea for longer or try grating the ginger rather than slicing it. If you do not own a tea infuser, then strain the tea through a fine mesh sieve to catch the ginger pieces.

Ingredients

  1. 1-inch piece of fresh ginger, thinly sliced

  2. 8 ounces boiling water

Directions

  1. Place sliced ginger in a tea infuser inside a mug. Pour hot water in mug, cover, and steep for five minutes. Remove infuser before drinking.

Killer 3 Stations Ab Workout

How to get six pack abs FAST:
http://sixpackshortcuts.com/rdM

What"s up,

Mike here with sixpackshortcuts. This is a great ab routine to do when you"re with friends. Everyone can get their work in at once -- and it"s very motivating because you"ll have to keep up with the other guys or girls working out with you.

Here"s the breakdown:

-- 30 SECONDS PER STATION
-- NO REST BETWEEN STATIONS AND MINIMIZE TRANSITION TIME

STATION 1: DECLINE SIT-UPS

Use a decline bench, or put plates under one end of a regular bench to create a decline. Put your hands on your head, and sit up by crunching your abs. Do not pull on your neck with your hands, and be sure to control your movement at all times especially if you are a beginner.

STATION 2: LEG RAISE

Use a dip station, or hold yourself on two elevated objects such as two tables or counter tops. Keep your legs almost straight, and kick them up in the air above your waist. Initiate the movement from your abs, it should feel like your body is folding together like a jack-knife.

STATION 3: MOUNTAIN CLIMBERS

Start off in a push-up position. Step one foot up underneath your waist, and then the other. Repeat this for 30 seconds. To make it more challenging, place your hands lower along your body and support more of your weight with your hands.

I preferably do this after my my weight training workout, I try to knock them out as fast as I can so that my heart rate stay high. That way I"m burning fat and getting my ab work done at the same time.

Make sure you get a good feel or squeeze on every rep to really bring out the nice lines and definitions.

Also if you want to get six pack abs fast, watch this video now:

http://sixpackshortcuts.com/rdM

And if you"d like to get a ripped body and six pack abs, my recommendation is start using Afterburn Training. It"s very effective for getting a ripped body and abs because it allows you to build muscle and burn large amounts of calories in the 48 hours after you workout.

I put a free video up on my site explaining Afterburn Training and showing you how you can use it to get abs. Check it out here:

Does money buy happiness? Yes, up to a point. — Quartz

Take three people. All are unmarried, 33-year-old women who live in the United States. One makes an annual salary of $40,000, another makes $120,000, and the third makes $200,000. Who do you think is the happiest?

According to a recently released study (paywall) in the burgeoning field of happiness research, the two higher-earning women are likely to report more satisfaction with their lives than the one who makes $40,000. But, perhaps surprisingly, the psychologists who conducted the study find that the one making $200,000 is probably no happier than the one making $120,000. This is because both the $120,000 and $200,000 women have incomes above $105,000, which according to their research is the point at which greater household income in the US is not associated with greater happiness. The technical term for this cutoff is the income “satiation point.”

The study is based on a life-satisfaction survey conducted on over 1 million people as part of the Gallup World Poll. Respondents across the world were asked to rate their lives on a scale of 0-10, where 0 is the “worst possible life” and 10 is the “best possible life.” (This author would give himself an eight.)

The researchers analyzed the relationship between this score and household income. They find that in every region of the world, after accounting for a person’s age, gender, and marital status, people with higher incomes are happier. But they also find that there is a level of income at which happiness no longer increases with more money. This varies by region, with Australia and New Zealand the highest and Latin America and the Caribbean the lowest. They even find some evidence that in certain places, when incomes rise above the cutoff level, life satisfaction gets lower.

The chart below shows the “satiation point” for different areas of the world. The incomes are converted to US dollars and adjusted for variations in spending power across countries.

These psychologists, from Purdue University and the University of Virginia, are not the first to study how income relates to life satisfaction. In 2010, the Nobel prize-winning duo of economist Angus Deaton and psychologist Daniel Kahneman, famously found that the satiation point for US households was about $75,000 (about $84,000 in 2016 dollars). This new research improves on Deaton and Kahneman’s work, because the data is able to account for the number of people in a household, has more detailed income numbers, and includes responses from many more countries.

Dan Sacks is an economist at Indiana University who studies the relationship between income and subjective well-being. He tells Quartz over email that he finds the new research compelling, but far from definitive. The primary strength of this paper, Sacks says, is that the researchers have access to a huge dataset that, unlike many previous studies, includes a large number of high-income people. His main concern is that the research relies on flawed survey questions.

The surveys rely on self-reported income, and previous research shows that just because people say they make a certain amount of money, it doesn’t mean they actually do (pdf). “It could be true that on average, people who say they have income of $150,000 are no happier than people who say they have income of $100,000,” writes Sacks. “But I’m not convinced that people who actually have income of $150,000 are no happier than people who have income of $100,000.” Also, it’s possible that rich people have a tendency to underemphasize their happiness compared with poorer people.

People also tend to answer questions about their happiness differently on different days. While a person’s answer on any given day is predictive of what they say a month later, it’s not that statistically robust. Today, I say my life is an eight, but ask me tomorrow and it might be a seven. This measurement error makes it difficult for researchers to assess the income-happiness relationship with great accuracy.

But let’s assume that the research is right, and there is some point at which higher incomes don’t predict greater happiness. Does that mean that if you already make $120,000, you wouldn’t be happier with a $30,000 raise?

Not at all. Research suggests that the average person who makes $150,000 is no happier than the average person who makes $120,000. But it could be that the sort of person who makes $120,000 is different in some fundamental way from the sort of person who makes $150,000. Perhaps, the people who make $150,000 would be less happy if they made $120,000, so their satiation point is higher than the sort of person who is happy with $120,000 and doesn’t want for anything more.

Recapturing the Flavors of My Youth: Nostalgia Tastes Like Chicago Chinese Food

When I was younger, one of my favorite meals was Chinese food. Occasionally, it would even earn birthday meal status! I grew up on three unique restaurants: Hi Howe, Lim’s, and Pine Yard. Hi Howe was a Sauganash Cantonese favorite on Cicero that featured the Hi Howe Sizzling Platter, Lim’s was a Skokie mom-and-pop-takeout joint on Main Street that served chop suey and egg foo young, and Pine Yard was an Evanston restaurant on Church Street known for its Szechuan and Mandarin dishes, along with moo shu. As time went on, Hi Howe and Lim’s closed down. I never quite found the same Hi Howe sweet and sour chicken or Lim’s beef chow tastes again. I tried local favorites, Joy of the Wok on Dempster, and China Chef on Lincoln (both in Morton Grove), but neither of them could replace the tastes I had come to love. I still had Pine Yard, though. Their dishes were prepared differently, and their styles were distinct, but Pine Yard had plenty of other things going for it. I still missed Hi Howe and Lim’s, but I was at peace knowing that I could still get a few of my Chinese favorites in Evanston.

At some point during my adolescence, something scary happened. Pine Yard’s location on Church Street was going to be part of a major redevelopment initiative and they would need to vacate. This was devastating to my younger self. How would I get my fix for Chinese food? Ugh! Before long, however, my worry proved to be for naught. Pine Yard would move into a Davis Street (roughly one block south) storefront and serve again! Personal culinary disaster averted. As the years progressed, my taste for Pine Yard was bolstered by numerous and repeated visits. Then, something magical happened my senior year of college. I moved off campus into a real dump. A dump that was one (ONE!) block away from the restaurant. This meant I could have Chinese food whenever I wanted!

Now, you might be wondering how a college student could afford to eat out, like, ever. In normal circumstances, that might be a reasonable ponderance. In this situation, however, I was made in the shade, most notably because of two things. First, because I was living in a real dump with five roommates, my “room” costs were minimal, which meant my tuition refund check allowed for ample “board” expenditures. Second, Pine Yard was known for having one of the best lunch specials around. For about eight bucks, you could get a crispy egg roll, a heaping spoonful of vegetable fried rice, a plentiful portion of an entree, a bowl of wonton soup, and a fortune cookie. If you were anyone but me, you might have had enough for two meals. It was a lot of food, and a great deal.

crispy Chinese egg rolls with sweet and sour dipping sauce

Chowhound

Once I graduated, though, things were going to change, right? Wrong! I went to work for Northwestern as the coordinator of the Undergraduate Leadership Program. This meant my Pine Yard lunches continued! In fact, they continued so regularly that the staff inside knew me and my order, wishing me to enjoy “my favorite lunch” every Friday. Of course, all good things must come to an end. I left my job at Northwestern for grad school in Champaign, and upon completing the program and getting a job at a southside charter school, moved to Printer’s Row. My weekly lunches were over, but the connection in my brain of what I came to understand Chinese food to be was solid as a rock, cemented forever.

I managed to get north from time to time and indulge in the comfort food that was my favorite lunch, but that all changed in 2013. Disaster struck, and Pine Yard closed suddenly. An electrical fire torched the building. My sister and I mourned the loss of a childhood favorite that became an adulthood staple. Without a proper send-off, where the restaurant announces its closing, and you get to visit as much as you can before it closes its doors for good, we were left stunned—craving food we may never have again.

Chicago Tastes Like...

Giardiniera: Chicago’s Condiment
How Chicago Became a Coffee Roaster’s Town

As we read articles about the blaze, we maintained hope that Pine Yard would rise again. It had to! What would we do for Chinese food if it didn’t? Still, despite what we read, we knew it was a real possibility that the restaurant wouldn’t make it back from this. The hospitality business is tough. I don’t know how many spots I’ve seen temporarily shutter with a sign on the door that says “closed for renovation” that never opened again. As the months passed, it became clearer and clearer that Pine Yard would join that list. I’d check online every once in a while, still holding out hope. After a few years, still nothing. What once was a favorite meal was no more. I rarely ate Chinese food. I’d try a place hoping to find a replacement, but it never measured up. I’d emptily remark to my wife, “I could really go for some Chinese tonight,” knowing full well that I’d be out of luck. I needed to move on, but I couldn’t. Ever the persistent character, I remained watchful, yet unhopeful. One day in 2017, after three or four years of searching, I googled “Pine Yard,” expecting to find nothing new. Much to my surprise, however, a link from TripAdvisor popped up. It was titled, “The Owners of Pine Yard Restaurant in Evanston – Mei Lin House…” What. In the heck. Is this?!

I clicked on the link and read the review. Allegedly, the owners of Pine Yard opened up a carryout location in Wilmette. Is this true? I hope it’s true! It can’t be true. Can it?! Why would they call it Mei Lin House? Why isn’t it called Pine Yard? Ugh, why isn’t this more obvious and definitive? Filled with equal parts hope and skepticism, I remembered the original owners had sold Pine Yard about six months prior to the fire. Maybe they couldn’t name their new place Pine Yard. Maybe they sold those rights. Maybe this is what I’ve been looking for! After visiting their website, and checking out their menu, I texted my mom and my sister. Pine Yard might be alive, though with a different name. Still, I couldn’t bring myself to head up there and verify it. What if it wasn’t the same, despite the nearly identical menu? What if they changed things? What if what I loved burned down in that fire? Finally, I had enough. I needed to know. I headed to Wilmette, ordered my favorite lunch, and hoped. Lucky for me, I found what I was looking for. It was a long few years, but I finally got what I craved. I ate that meal with contentment, and an odd feeling of accomplishment. I suppose it’s because I tracked it down, persevering for years. Regardless, in those moments, I was happy. I found my Chinese food.

Pixabay

Some of you might think I’m exaggerating a bit, perhaps being overly dramatic. I’m not, and here’s why: I had been to Pine Yard so many times, from such a young age, that it was Chinese food, and Chinese food was Pine Yard. They were identical, equivalent, and exclusively so. The brain is a funny thing, huh? But I doubt I’m alone in experiencing something like this. Think about something your mom (or dad!) made for you growing up. It might be a meatloaf, or a spaghetti sauce, or an oven-fried chicken breast (all classics from my childhood). Think about a favorite dish from a favorite restaurant—maybe a veal parmesan, or a prime rib. When you try to make one of those dishes yourself, or order it at another restaurant, what happens? Chances are, it falls flat, and you wish you had made something else, or ordered the other dish you were considering. Why? Because your brain associates meatloaf or veal parmesan, not with the general concept of the dish, but with a specific preparation, and when you don’t get that exact and precise preparation, you’re not only left with the craving, you’re disappointed.

I think this phenomenon is pretty common—especially with certain foods. A few years ago, we were at my aunt and uncle’s place eating a deep dish pizza from Pizzeria Due (they lived two blocks away, so carry-out worked great). I grew up on Due’s (for a treat) and Lou Malnati’s (more regularly), so this is what deep dish pizza was supposed to be. My uncle, who grew up out west, wasn’t quite as enthralled. Surprised, I rattled off a few other pizzas, asking if he preferred those. Still, ambivalent, I became nonplussed. He finally told me that the only place that takes care of his pizza cravings is the place he grew up on out West. Now, I’d bet head-to-head, it wouldn’t hold a candle to the pizza we have in Chicago. But for him, that didn’t matter. For him, what he grew up on was pizza, and pizza was what he grew up on. They were identical, equivalent, and exclusively so. When I heard it, I didn’t get it. Incredulous, I dismissed him and his preferences. But as I think about Pine Yard, I realize I was probably a bit unfair because I can relate. Don’t get me wrong. I still think, objectively, our pizza is probably better, but I now realize that subjective preference has little to do with objectivity. It’s why Barnaby’s in Niles for thin crust pizza, Due’s and Lou’s for deep dish, Herm’s Palace in Skokie for hot dogs and fries, Carson’s for baby back ribs, and Pine Yard for Chinese food will always be special to me. I grew up on them. And while my brain was building and strengthening neural connections between terms and tastes, preferences and templates for comparison were being constructed.

fortune cookies and red chopsticks

Pixabay

Does this mean I can never like another Chinese restaurant, rib joint, pizza place, or hot dog hut? No. It just means that, despite any effort on my part, the places I grew up on likely will be influences on my palate for the rest of my life. They’ll lead me to come back to have a craving satisfied from time to time. They’ll shape and determine new places I might try and like. They’ll comparatively inform my distaste for others. They’ll even motivate me to track down food I never thought I’d taste again. You probably have your places too. It’s only natural. They carry with them so much history, and so many memories. Sure, I can expand my horizons, build new cravings, and form new preferences. I hope I’ve done that. I think I have. I’m sure you have too. But these places I grew up on will always be with me, and that’s okay by me.

http://www.jukasorganic.com/ Organic Red Palm Oil Cooking Recipe Quick and Easy! Any one can make this 15 minute meal. As seen on the Dr. OZ show, of course from my ancestors too that have been cooking with this heart healthy oil for centuries. I was able to come up with a non-African recipe for those that just want something quick and easy. Juka"s Palm Oil is from Africa, it is one of the best Organic and Pure Red Palm Oil in the market. Identify pure red palm oil by looking at the color of the oil, not the color of the bottle, the consistency and taste. "Our bottle is transparent, what you see is what you get". Interesting Thing of the Day

Caleta Valdés

The Argentinean portion of Patagonia comprises five provinces, of which the northernmost one is known as Chubut. You have to fly about two hours southwest from Buenos Aires to get there, yet it’s still over 1,000km (about 600 miles) from the tip of the continent—just barely into Patagonia when you consider its overall scale. This impossibly dry, windy, and desolate area is as far south as Paul Theroux got in The Old Patagonian Express. He felt he was nowhere, and it was here that he experienced his much-quoted epiphany that nowhere is a place. Although I was to discover a much more varied and inviting landscape a few days later as we traveled deeper into Patagonia, I have fond memories of the quiet, empty, and rugged steppes of Chubut.

Wonders Around Every Corner
Our guide had arranged for us to spend an entire day visiting one of the region’s most popular areas, Peninsula Valdés, a provincial park that is home to more wildlife than you can shake a camera at. This peninsula is really more like a large island connected to the mainland by a narrow isthmus. In certain seasons—though not when we were there—whale watching is the peninsula’s big industry, as migrating southern right whales and orcas frequent the waters just off the coast. We did see plenty of elephant seals and sea lions and a variety of birds, not to mention astonishing numbers of sheep. But the thing I found most interesting on Peninsula Valdés was the view from a rest stop.

We had been driving for quite some time through an endless expanse of Nowhere on our way from Somewhere to Somewhere Else. We had a schedule to keep, but we could afford perhaps 15 minutes for a quick rest stop. As we pulled into a restaurant’s parking lot, our guide mentioned that if we walked down this trail to the right, we could see (still more) elephant seals; if we took the trail to the left, we’d be able to see a most unusual sight known as Caleta Valdés, or Valdés Creek. The left-hand trail was a 15-minute round trip, which meant that we were supposed to choose between using the restrooms and beholding a natural wonder. I opted for a hasty restroom visit and a jog down the trail on the left.

Catching the Drift
What we saw from an overlook at the end of the trail was a long, thin strip of land—basically an overgrown sandbar—running parallel to the coast. At the far end, about 30km (20 miles) north, this strip of silt is connected to the peninsula. Here, at the southern end, is the only inlet to the so-called creek—a channel about 150m (500 feet) wide. Less than 10 years ago, the channel was 600m (2000 feet) wide. This geological feature, known as a coastal cord, tends to trap a bit of sediment every time the tide goes out. For the past couple of years, observers have predicted that it will close up entirely “any day now.” Unless another outlet forms—which seems unlikely—Caleta Valdés will soon change from a creek to a salt lake. And given the shallowness of that lake and the area’s extremely low humidity, it could dry out completely in several more years.

Caleta Valdés is thus the only spot on the continent where the coastline is growing; everywhere else it’s either being eroded slowly away or receding due to rising ocean levels. It’s almost as though this little strip of land is thumbing its nose at continental drift, growing out toward the east as the whole continent slips slowly westward. This small wonder was well worth an abbreviated rest stop. —Joe Kissell

Who Will Die After Jack on This Is Us?

The TV mystery of the last couple years has been solved: we now know how Jack dies on This Is Us. Our hearts still hurt, but the show must go on — but one thing we"re worried about with this show is that the show will go on to kill another beloved character. Now that we know the series will dabble in flashforwards into the future, we"re kinda freaking out about who"s next. Yes, everyone on this show will eventually die, we know, but This Is Us toyed with our emotions regarding Jack"s death for so long that we think they may rely on this storytelling device. While we hope not, honestly, let"s prepare ourselves for the worst anyway and examine which character"s death may inspire the next big mystery.

Know The 5 Stages Of Sleep For Better Rest

We get it. There’s nothing better than an extra 30 minutes of sleep on a warm, cozy bed.

But did you know that it could actually make you more tired?

I know, it sounds counterintuitive. More sleep = more tired doesn’t seem like an equation that makes sense, but hear me out.

After launching my language learning company, Rype, my sleep was completely out of wack. Some nights I would only get 2-3 hours of sleep, while other nights I would get 10, and still feel exhausted. If you can relate, I hope to share the 5 different stages of sleep we all experience, and some actionable tips to help you sleep better!

The 5 Stages of Sleep

It turns out that there are 5 major sleep stages that we all go through during the night. Starting with…

Stage 1 (NREM)

In this first stage, you’re in a NREM (non-rapid eye moment) stage. This is when you’re floating in and out of consciousness. It’s that moment when you feel awake but you also notice your mind is drifting away. You may also feel your muscle jerk that wakes you up into consciousness, also known as hypnic myoclonia.

Stage 2 (NREM)

Stage 2 is when you start to enter the lighter phases of sleep. About half of our sleep time is spent during this NREM stage. This is when your muscle and heart rate begins to relax, and your brain slowly dwindles down.

Stage 3 & 4 (NREM)

These next two stages are combined as they have very similar effects on your sleep, called slow wave sleep (SWS). This is known as the deepest part of the sleep cycle, and one must not be woken up during this stage. If you’ve ever been abruptly woken up in a groggy state, you were probably experiencing slow wave sleep.

The other reason why SWS is vital is because the body rejuvenates itself during this stage. Growth hormones are released, which is used to heal muscle and tissues, and provides important oxygen and nutrients to the body.

Fun fact: these are also the stages when children (or adults) experience sleep walking and bedwetting.

Stage 5 (REM)

This is the final stage of the sleep cycle, and the only stage where you experience REM (rapid eye moment) sleep. While we only spend 20% of our time during this stage, it’s when the brain is most active. It’s likely the most important stage as well because the brain is revitalized for daytime functioning.

The majority of our dreams are also occuring in this final stage of sleep, and the brain waves appear as if we’re awake.

How to Improve Your Sleep Quality

The real question is, how do we actually sleep better? I’ve spent hundreds of dollars and hours experimenting with different solutions, and these are the best tips I have found to be helpful.

1. Block blue light

In the digital world we live in today, the majority of poor sleep quality is due to what’s known as blue light. Studies show that we spend on average 10.5 hours a day in front of our screens (i.e. smartphones, TV, laptops) 1. Each of these screens emit harmful blue light that suppresses melatonin, our sleep hormone. In short, this tricks our brain to feel ‘awake’ when we should be in relaxed mode.

The best way to combat this effectively is to invest in a pair of blue light blocking glasses (also known as computer glasses) that you can wear while you work, and 90 minutes before you sleep.

Recommended: iGOTHAM Eyewear

2. Adjust your room temperature

Sleep experts have shown that room temperature between 60 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit is ideal for the best sleep. A room with extreme temperatures leads to more frequent awakenings and lighter sleep.

This can be extremely difficult if you have a sleeping partner, which is why I recommend Chilipad. It’s a heating and cooling pad that you place underneath your bedsheets. Best of all, you can place it just on your side of the bed so you can customize the best temperature for you, without disturbing your sleeping partner.

Recommended: Chilipad

3. Optimize for REM sleep

Given how important REM sleep is in our sleep stage, we should optimize our sleep time around it. The best way to do that is to

It turns out that our sleep cycle contains a REM stage every 90 minutes. That means if you know when you want to wake up (ex. 6 am), then you want to work backwards in 90 minute increments to find out when to sleep.

If your goal is to wake up at 6 am, then you will likely need to fall asleep at 10:30 pm or 12:00 am to meet the 90 minute rule. You can also use a sleep calculator to make this process more automated.

Recommended: Sleepyti.me (sleep calculator)

Next steps

I hope this was useful for those of you that struggle with getting quality sleep in your life. As someone who has struggled with insomnia, these tips are dear to my heart.

Like many of you, I procrastinated on taking action in improving my sleep. But I can tell you from personal experience the positive impact it has had in my life, once I put these tips into action.

My recommendation is to try out at least one of these tips. Once you notice the positive effects in your sleep, you can try another, and so forth.

If you are a struggling night owl, read here to learn tips on how to get more rest.

We Asked Jaden Smith About The Environment, Millennials, And Water

JS: It felt like I had been lied to my whole life, and that people actually weren’t telling me the truth about what world I was living in.

And it feels kind of terrible. Those microplastics [in the ocean] break down, fish swallow them, and then we eat the fish, and those microplastics end up in our gut.

That’s what happens. So people need to realize that the effect of climate change is serious and in 2050 there will be 50 million climate change refugees if we don’t do anything about it.

Description:

Raw food author and chef Jennifer Cornbleet shares how to prepare a delicious dairy-free ranch dressing using soaked cashews. From her DVD, Raw Food Made Easy.

Having a delicious, creamy salad dressing on hand makes it easier to get everyone in your household -- from finicky kids to stubborn grown-ups -- excited about eating their vegetables. In this video, Jennifer Cornbleet shares her raw, dairy-free version of the all-American favorite: ranch dressing.

Soaked raw cashews give this raw salad dressing its velvety texture.

Salt is a key ingredient in this simple recipe, so Jennifer explains how to select a good quality salt and reveals how the color of salt can indicate the presence of healthy minerals.

The iconic "ranch taste" is achieved with tangy lemon juice and onion and garlic powders which provide a smoky, muted flavor. Commercially bottled dressings generally get their flavor profile from chemicals and artificial ingredients.

Since there is no mayonnaise base to this dressing, it"s perfect for when you want to eat raw on the go. It keeps for hours at room temperature with no concern about spoilage.

BARON HOT SAUCE

This video is about BARON HOT SAUCE
My name is Nancy Lou Capizzi and this is the story of my father, Nunzio Capizzi.
On September 20, 1920, my Sicilian grandparents, Annunziata Gatto, from Bronte and Nunzio Capizzi, from Catania, were married in St. Paul’s Church, Philadelphia, PA. They soon bought a house on Stella Street The following year, on August 29, 1921, their first of four children, my father, Nunzio D. Capizzi, was born.
As a teenager, with his movie star good looks and sense of style, Nunzio’s friends nicknamed him “The Baron”.
In 1942, on his 21rst birthday, Baron joined the U.S. Marine Corps and, as a member of the 3rd Marine Fleet Corps and the Marine Amphibious Corps, was quickly deployed to the World War II Pacific Theatre, where he participated in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands campaign. There, he experienced hand to hand combat. He was an anti-aircraft gunner in the occupation and defense of Okinawa and the Ryukyu Islands.
In 1947, Baron married Nicholina Pizzuro. Soon after, they started a family with the birth of two daughters: myself, and my sister, Annette. Mom cooked on weekdays, Dad cooked on the weekends. Sunday spaghetti and meatball dinners were usually spent with our Capizzi relatives on Stella Street . The crowd was usually large, so we ate at the dining table in their basement. My grandfather’s homemade wine was always on the table.
In 1956, our parents moved from Philadelphia to North Miami Beach, Florida, where they opened up Baron’s Barber Shop and Nickie’s Beauty Salon.
Customers were treated like family in both the barbershop and beauty salon, where one could always count on a great haircut, good conversation, a fresh cup of coffee and those little Italian sandwiches, made with eggs, potatoes and salami, that Baron whipped up in the kitchen. No one ever went home hungry! Sadly, after 51 years of marriage, Nickie passed away in 1998.
When he is not with customers in his shop, Baron can be found tending to his garden, where he grows assorted vegetables and a wide variety of hot peppers, from which he produces and bottles his own organic hot sauce.
My sister and I know we will be passing on to future generations, the recipes for Baron’s Hot Sauce, the relish made from the pulp of the peppers, as well as the dried ground pepper.
In May of 2013, his only granddaughter , Nicole DeMeo, was chosen to present her Senior Thesis, “The Baron”, as a photographic exhibition at Fordham University’s Center Gallery in New York City. ). It was an emotional moment for all of us, but in particular, to Nicole and her Grandfather
At the age of 94, our father is still cutting hair in his barbershop. His greatest joy is having the ability to serve 5 generations of families that come through his doors. His only disappointment is that he has managed to outlive most of his regular customers.

Fascinating Map Shows How Long It Takes to Learn Different Languages

Learning a second language is often on everyone"s to do-list, but sadly the daily grind of everyday life seems to always get in the way no matter what - because as everyone knows, there"s never enough hours in the day. The problem is learning a new language takes time. The good news however is some are easier to learn than others and this simple colour-coded map shows which languages are easiest to pick up and which ones will take you the longest.

Languages based upon Latin, such as French, Spanish and Italian are some of the easiest to pick up and are placed in ‘Category I’ languages with an estimated learning time of around 6 months. Languages such as Japanese, Korean and Arabic are placed in ‘Category V,’ and can take considerably longer and an estimated 2 years to master properly. Check out the rest on the map below.

Gluten-Free Vegan Allergy-Friendly Chocolate Banana Cupcakes

Growing up, my mom always made her famous chocolate potato cake for each of our birthdays. I know, I know: it sounds very odd, but the truth is you never actually tasted the potato and it really just ensured that the batter was super moist, which I probably never appreciated as a kid but certainly do now.

These days when birthdays arise in our household, I’ve found my own tricks to achieve a really moist, super chocolatey cake and cupcakes. This recipe uses one of our son’s favorite foods: bananas.

When it comes to strength training, there are many things that can either enhance or subtract the benefits that come with lifting weights. Whether you’re doing strength training for women or bodybuilding for men, the same general rules apply.

Be consistent with your fitness model. Stick to your workout plan, do your best each time, and strive to make improvements along the way.

Don’t assume that heavy lifting is necessary to build strength, tone up, and achieve weight loss. You can burn fat and lose weight with basic exercises such as bicep curls, deadlifts, squats, ab exercises, buttocks workouts and lower body exercises, as well as doing a circuit that incorporates cardio, HIIT, or Tabata.

You can get a great full body workout at the gym or do home strength training. Home workouts are just as effective as gym workouts as long as you find a routine that works for you. Online workout videos are a great way to increase motivation and get a great workout at home.

Diet is crucial, so make sure to keep it clean by eating healthy, whole foods that contain plenty of nutrients to give you the energy you need to burn fat and build muscle effectively while boosting your metabolism. Protein, healthy fats, and fiber will keep you full longer and help you build lean muscle.

Listen to your body and do what works for you. Don’t assume that you have to follow the most ripped bodybuilder or trainer you see. You don’t have to lift or bench a million pounds or join crossfit to get fit and healthy.

Fitness is personal, so try different things to build your power, strength, and balance. You can start with quick and easy routines that use bodyweight / no weights and are low impact, then gradually build up to more intense routines that incorporate weight lifting and even cardio HIIT with weights.

Ultimately, you have to experiment by combining many elements into a fitness blender and eventually you will tone it up and slim it down, sculpting your best body ever while living a healthier, happier life!
