Summer in San Francisco

Last summer, while planning my now-annual visit to California to visit my dad, I added in a new stop that I hope becomes a regular one — San Francisco. One of my hometown best friends had recently moved cross-country to settle in Lower Pacific Heights, and I couldn’t wait to explore the amazing life she’d created for herself out west.

Presidio San Francisco

Golden Gate Bridge San Diego

After a long flight from Albany, where I’d barely caught my breath after my Boston and Martha’s Vineyard trip, I couldn’t wait to give Michelle a squeeze — and enjoy four days in a city I hadn’t properly explored since a school trip when I was thirteen.

San Francisco Nightlife

After losing my mind at the amazing-ness of Michelle’s brownstone apartment (she lucked into the third bedroom of a rent-controlled apartment her two sweet roommates have rented for more than eight years), we headed out for drinks. San Francisco, I’d learned, isn’t huge on rooftop bars — so the heated “roof-ish” patio at Jones was a pretty big deal.

I was immediately glad Michelle had insisted I bring a sweater. You know that famous Mark Twain quote, “the coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco?” THAT DUDE KNEW WHAT WAS UP.

We continued our reunion celebration with dinner at Hops and Hominy and bar hopping what felt like all over the Bay Area. As someone who is often in serious trip planning and logistics coordinating mode, there’s nothing I love more than visiting my friends and just blindly following them around for a few days with little to no awareness of where I actually am. Makes blog writing difficult in retrospect (ha!) but it’s such a treat at the time.

San Francisco Nightlife

The next day, Michelle had an amazingly fun itinerary planned with hiking and brunch and so many of my favorite things. Unfortunately, I was feeling sicker than I have in ages and so was basically a useless blob the entire day — more on that later. But leave it to this super host to find the perfect activity even for an invalid houseguest: a feel-good movie at the fancy Kabuki 8 theater.

The following morning, though still feeling pretty weak, I couldn’t stand the thought of wasting another day on Michelle’s lovely itinerary, and so we set off for a gentle walk through Crissy Field. It was a chilly and windy morning, and fog dramatically clung to the bright red Golden Gate Bridge in the distance.

At the base, we climbed up the Fort Point tower for better views, and could only take our hands out of our pockets long enough to snap quick selfies before they felt like they were freezing again! I could not believe that it was June in California and I was so cold (and yes, in fact, I am writing about this trip nearly a full year later — whoops.)

Thankfully, things started to warm up by the time we got back to the car. The walk had wiped me out but also worked up the first bit of appetite I’d had in over 36 hours, so I was pumped for our next stop — Chestnut Street in Pac Heights.

We could have spent all day strolling this too-cute neighborhood. After evaluating several options, we settled on lunch at Tacolicious, where I nodded in agreement to their signature tagline, “fingers over forks.”

When we emerged from the restaurant, I was shocked by what awaited us outside — bright blue skies! I never would have guessed based on the morning that our day would turn out this way. Michelle was kind enough to drive me back to see the bridge from another vantage point so I could obsessively take photos with this beautiful gift of sun. Ah, tourists.

But seriously… how beautiful is this?!

We ended up going for another wander, this time down to the harbor. The views looked familiar — they were the same I’d seen from my Alcatraz Cruise, my one little pop-in to San Fran since my last proper visit almost fifteen years prior.

But sometimes, when you’re catching up with an old friend, it doesn’t really matter so much where you are or what you’re doing… it’s all just background to a great conversation, anyway.

The morning’s activities left my still-rough-self pretty wiped, but Michelle knew just what to do: a driving tour! I did get out of the car at our two main destinations, but mostly I was quite happy to watch the city go by from the car window, listening to my friend’s narration about her new home.

Perhaps my favorite stop was the Painted Ladies. This famous row of Victorian Houses got its big break in the opening credits of Full House, but fame hasn’t gone to its head.

A little less overwhelming was Lombard Street. In theory, the world’s second windiest road sounds very cool, but in reality it’s actually pretty hard to appreciate (or photograph) unless you’re taking in an aerial view. Still, we drove down it, which was cool, and it was fun to see the huge tour group all angling for the best photo.

That night, we went to Tony’s for pizza and the Warrios game. While the waits are notoriously crazy at this popular eatery, we beat the system by sitting at the bar — a trade off I’m almost always happy to make when dining as a pair.

The next day was the first that I truly had my appetitive back, a terrible thing to lose in a city so famous for its cuisine. Michelle was working from home this day and it was so nice to just have side-by-side laptop time. As someone who often works alone, it really makes you appreciate the silent company of someone else doing the same. Other than a quick lunch outside on the street at The Grove, we chilled from our office on the couch all day.

And suddenly, it was my last night in San Francisco. We ran around town meeting up with various friends — dinner with Michelle’s roommate, drinks with my childhood neighbor and friend — and discovered two gems in the process. The first was Smuggler’s Cove, an intensely-themed pirate bar that would put most tikis to shame. While the night we visited was a little weird (there was no music playing, which I hate in a bar), I’ve had enough personal recommendations for this place to conclude that we just had an off night. I’d love to give it another chance and really work my way through the rum menu someday!

And our next stop was Chambers Bar, which looked like it was made for Instagram. Though we arrived not long before closing, this was one of my favorite finds from the whole trip, and also left me itching for a return.

We turned in after, as the next morning Michelle was back to the office, and I was on to San Jose for a night with my friend Abby before flying to Los Angeles. I always love visiting Abby — when travel bloggers get together they do boring stuff like go to the gym and go to nondescript restaurants and sit on the couch and watch TV and basically do nothing but catch up and gossip about our weird and wonderful industry. Well, at least these travel bloggers do. (And clearly, based on the zero evidence I have of these 24 hours with Abby, we don’t take many photos either.)

Five days in Northern California flew by.

They did so in large part due to the illness I mentioned before… which wasn’t just a bug.

I really hesitated on if I wanted to write about this or not, but I am pretty sure that I was drugged on our first night out. I have many reasons for thinking so, the primary one being that at our last stop for the night, Michelle and I were approached by a sketchy guy who tried to sell us drugs. We laughed off his dancefloor sales pitch (um yeah NO THANKS) but he wouldn’t quite leave us alone. Michelle says she noticed I started acting funny and the guy started speaking to me in Spanish, and I replying in it, so she couldn’t follow what was going on. I don’t remember any of this — because him buzzing around us like a fly you just can’t swat was my last memory of the entire night.

And so I also don’t remember that shortly after, as Michelle was putting us in an Uber, that same man muscled open the door or our car and forced himself into the vehicle just as we were pulling away. Michelle screamed that he wasn’t with us, and our driver screeched to the side of the road, yanked the guy out of the car and onto the curb, and hightailed us home to safely.

I was violently ill for two days; nauseous, weak, and unable to keep food or even water down. While I definitely considered the possibility that I was having a very weird hangover (for better or for worse, at this point I know my body’s reaction to excessive partying pretty well, and vomiting just isn’t party of the equation) but a call to my doctor back east confirmed that my symptoms were in line with those of date rape drugs. He encouraged me to go to a hospital for testing and treatment and  to file a police report, which in retrospect I wish I had done. But I didn’t have health insurance at the time and was worried what it all would cost, and I was also fearful of the reaction of whoever I might report what happened to, considering nothing really happened.

It was a reminder that with all the far flung, exotic destinations I travel to, terrible things can happen anywhere and women especially must always, always be vigilant when it comes to their personal safety. While it was a very unsettling experience and I can’t remember the last time I felt so physically terrible, I am so grateful to have escaped the situation relatively unscathed and to have had Michelle take such good care of me while I recovered.

Golden Gate Bridge San Diego

As for all the things I missed while I was healing… I’ll just have to go back. I’ve got the perfect host to crash with, after all.

Till next time, San Francisco…

Cozy Cannabis Retailers : High West Cannabis

Colorado"s High West Cannabis Dispensary Resembles an Elegant Residence

While most cannabis dispensaries feature sterile or clinical decor, Colorado"s High West Cannabis shop is more cozy in its look and feel. Resembling an elegant living room, the dispensary promotes comfort and relaxation with its layout -- consisting of an oversized couch, rustic wood coffee table, leather-upholstered armchairs, and a large shag rug.

Next to a comfortable lounge space, visitors can find the dispensary"s front desk, and product sampling areas. Though accessible to consumers, these areas remain discreet, fitting with the retailer"s overall aesthetic feel.

As marijuana legalization efforts continue across the United States, stereotypes related to the medicinal plant are being challenged. In addition to a variety of luxury cannabis offerings, design-conscious dispensaries like High West Cannabis are also on the rise -- illustrating just much this industry has evolved in recent years.

Explore Beatles" Innovative "Penny Lane" in "Sgt. Pepper" Doc Clip

PBS will explore the creation and profound musical influence of the Beatles" Sgt. Pepper"s Lonely Hearts Club Band, with a new hour-long documentary, Sgt. Pepper"s Musical Revolution, premiering Saturday, June 3rd at 8 p.m. ET. In an exclusive clip, British composer-broadcaster Howard Goodall unpacks Paul McCartney"s groundbreaking Baroque-rock hybrid "Penny Lane," piece by piece.

The host opens by dissecting the construction of McCartney"s elaborate piano arrangement. "Paul made his own contribution to the subdividing of beats," he says. "He takes Little Richard"s eight even beats to a bar and makes them into four even beats in a bar, which is a musical version, I suppose, of replacing jogging with walking."

Goodall then isolates each of the song"s four layered pianos to demonstrate how the parts work together harmonically and tonally. "We can follow the trail of them all by unpicking the track, layer by layer, like an archeological dig, in the original masters," he says. "It"s a fantastic demonstration of how the Beatles put together their songs by using the studio as part of the creative process."

McCartney"s true genius on "Penny Lane" was melding a rock backing track with non-rock instrumentation – he used the 19th-century foot-pumped reed organ the harmonium on the track – and classical elements.

"Paul and John [Lennon]"s magpie-like search for instrumental colors that were unusual, half-forgotten or unexpected is one of the most distinctive features of the Sgt. Pepper project," Goodall says. "Alongside classical woodwind and brass, "Penny Lane" also gives pride of place to a so-called piccolo trumpet, a sound that was last fashionable in 1750."

McCartney"s inspiration for the song"s piccolo trumpet solo was watching a performance of Bach"s Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 on TV. David Mason"s regal fanfare remains a unique sonic surprise on Sgt. Pepper"s.

"When this Baroque-style melody is superimposed on the throughly contemporary backing on "Penny Lane," it creates, like so much on Sgt. Pepper, a new hybrid sound," Goodall enthuses. "Not a copy. Not a clone. A totally new combination."

Sgt. Pepper"s Musical Revolution features material previously unaccessible outside of Abbey Road Studios, including recordings of studio chatter and isolated instrumental and vocal tracks. The documentary also traces the evolution of other key tracks on the LP, along with the band members" personal stories and biographical connections to the music.

The doc coincides with the 50th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper"s. Last week marked the release of a massive reissue of the LP, featuring a new stereo mix by late producer George Martin"s son, Giles Martin, and 34 previously unreleased recordings.

Is "Wonder Woman" Any Good? Here"s What The Reviews Have To Say

DC has wisely forgone an ensemble flick this summer and is taking a shot at the Wonder Woman movie fans have wanted for decades. With Patty Jenkins (Monster) in the director"s seat, Gal Godot (the Fast & Furious franchise) as our super-powered star and Chris Pine (Star Trek) as the sexy sidekick, has DC delivered a respite from their universe"s usual grim-dark depression? Here"s what the reviews have to say:

You"re In For One-Part Origin Story, One-Part War Movie

It has a wobbly opening on a women-only island where hot chicks in fabulous Ancient Greek sandals appear to have wandered in from a Dolce & Gabbana ad campaign. This is Themyscira where the Amazon tribe have lived in peace for thousands of years[...] The island’s tranquillity is broken by the arrival of a cocky American soldier played by ‘Star Trek’ actor Chris Pine, who is adorable.

[Time Out]

Ares, she’s convinced, is the cause of the all-consuming conflict Steve’s described to her — World War I. She believes the only reason "the war to end all wars" could be happening is due to Ares" influence, and that once she defeats him, the violence will be over.

[Buzzfeed]

Once back in England, Diana and Steve are forced to go rogue, since Steve’s mission to stop German general Ludendorff (Danny Huston) and the deadly chemical warfare of Dr. Maru (Elena Anaya) would interfere with the pending armistice.

[The Wrap]

Gal Godot"s Portrayal Of Wonder Woman Is Uniquely Hers

Gadot’s Diana/Wonder Woman is brilliant but unsophisticated; brave but sometimes reckless; compassionate yet stubborn; idealistic yet capable of deadly force when there’s no other choice; endowed with astounding powers but as yet unsure of how to harness and master all her gifts.

[Chicago Sun-Times]

The film plays up Diana’s naiveté (without making fun of her), and when she and Steve arrive in war-torn London, her stranger-in-a-strange-land schtick reaches charming heights.

[IndieWire]

Whether she’s reacting to the unfamiliar sight of automobiles or constricting early 20th-century women’s fashions, she takes it all in like a fish-out-of-water naïf. When she has her first taste of ice cream, she swoons and enthusiastically tells the salesman, “You should be very proud,” as if he’s performed some kind of miracle. Gadot sells the innocence and humor in these moments every bit as convincingly as Daryl Hannah in Splash.

[Entertainment Weekly]

Chris Pine And Company Are A Blast To Watch

Pine"s been ill-served by blandsome hero roles in the past, but he looks perfectly comfortable here as the supporting character to a more luminous lead. (So comfortable, in fact, that I fear someone will see Wonder Woman and try to give Pine another Jack Ryan-style role.) He"s charismatic in a way that makes it easy to understand Diana"s fascination with him, and the script gives their flirtation just enough of an edge to make their romance seem genuinely sexy, not just sweet.

[Mashable]

War has yet to be eradicated from either the movieverse or the real one, so it’s not news that the situation ends up being more complicated than she assumed. Which comes as a shock to no one but Diana herself, after she finagles a way out to the front with Steve and his trustiest mercenary friends — the silver-tongued Sameer (Saïd Taghmaoui), the Scottish sharpshooter Charlie (Ewen Bremner), and the Native American smuggler Chief (Eugene Brave Rock). They’re a seen-it-all crew who, of course, reveal their hearts of gold right when Diana’s confidence is shaken and, along with it, her conception of mankind as fundamentally good unless tainted by forces of evil.

[Buzzfeed]

The Film"s Pacing Isn"t Perfect (Director"s Cut, Please?)

The rest of the world realizes that it is Diana"s duty to stand out, to preach the idealism that has been obliterated by the horrors of war. The film, however, takes forever to unleash her ass-kicking goddess within – and suffers for it.

[Rolling Stone]

It would be nice one of these days if some heroic editor just lopped off the last 30 minutes of all of these things.

[Entertainment Weekly]

Had it really broken the mold and come in below the two-hour mark, Wonder Woman could have been a thoroughly transporting film. As it stands, it’s intermittently spot-on, particularly in the pops of humor and romance between the exotically kick-ass yet approachable Gadot and the supremely charismatic Chris Pine as an American working for British intelligence, the first man the Amazon princess has ever met. With eager fans unlikely to bemoan the film’s length or its lapses in narrative energy, Wonder Woman will conquer their hearts as it makes its way around the globe.

[The Hollywood Reporter]

There"s Action, Spectacle... And Real Consequences

Jenkins and her team have great fun showcasing the Amazons" distinct fighting style, which emphasizes precision and agility over brute force (though they"re also more than capable of packing a punch when the occasion calls for it). Her eye for action serves Wonder Woman well until its climax, which eventually and unfortunately devolves into the dreary CG nonsense we"ve come to expect from big-budget blockbusters like these.

[Mashable]

It’s often said that there’s no such thing as an anti-war movie, since combat is so cinematically exciting, but director Patty Jenkins (“Monster”) gets closer to that goal than most: when we see war here, we see destroyed men who have lost limbs, devastated countryside, and yowling orphans who will never be reunited with their parents. And unlike so many 21st century adventures, the sacrifices here stick; there’s no take-backs in the final minutes.

[The Wrap]

This Is The First DC Movie That Feels Fun

What’s striking about her turn in the spotlight in Wonder Woman, beyond its milestone status as a female-centric studio superhero feature directed by a woman, is the movie’s sense of elated lightness.

[Buzzfeed]

Wonder Woman is smart, slick, and satisfying in all of the ways superhero films ought to be. How deliciously ironic that in a genre where the boys seem to have all the fun, a female hero and a female director are the ones to show the fellas how it’s done.

[Entertainment Weekly]

Watching Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman, I felt that same sense of overwhelming good emitting from Gal Gadot’s portrayal as I did with Christopher Reeve’s Superman. Again, there’s no hint of cynicism coming from Gadot’s Diana (Jenkins — who we interviewed recently — thankfully doesn’t even try to come up with a reason why anyone would refer to Diana as “Wonder Woman,” so that title is never spoken) – we just know she stands for good. And, my gosh, is that a refreshing surprise.

[UPROXX]

TL;DR

"Wonder Woman" is as much about a superhero rising as it is about a world deserving of her, and Diana’s hard-won insistence on battling for humanity (no matter how frequently they disappoint) adds the kind of gravitas and emotion that establishes it as the very best film the DCEU has made yet. There’s only one word for it: wonderful.

The Discovery of Radium / Marie Curie's miracle cure

by Morgen Jahnke

One of the central paradoxes of scientific research and technological development is that while every new discovery brings previously unknown possibilities to light, these discoveries can also have negative effects that may not be readily apparent. For example, certain medicines may provide exciting new treatment options, but it’s only later that their side effects come to light. One of the most glaring examples of this was the thalidomide scandal in the late 1950s, when thousands of women took this drug to combat morning sickness during pregnancy, and it was later found to cause birth defects. Similarly, in the 19th century, opium was thought of as a cure-all before its highly addictive nature was fully understood.

Along the same lines, Marie Sklodowska Curie’s discovery of the element radium in 1898 at first seemed to lead the way to a variety of novel medical treatments, but as the properties of radioactive materials became better known, radium’s health benefits came to seem more limited. Once added to everything from toothpaste to face cream, radium’s reputation went from cutting edge to dangerous within a few short decades.

The Element of Surprise

Marie Curie’s eventual discovery of radium was first set into motion by the research of French physicist Henri Becquerel, who noticed that materials containing uranium produced rays that fogged photographic plates. Looking into this phenomenon further, Marie Curie found that not only uranium, but also the element thorium, caused these effects regardless of their physical state (for example, dry or wet, crushed or solid), and from this deduced that the rays were part of the elements’ atomic makeup. She coined the word “radioactivity” to describe this property of these two elements, and along with other scientists of the time, opened the way to a new understanding that the atom was not the smallest unit of matter, but that even smaller particles (notably electrons) existed within it.

Building on this information, and on her observation that two uranium-containing compounds, pitchblende and chalcolite, produced much more radiation than uranium alone, Marie Curie speculated that there were other, as yet unknown, elements in these compounds. After extensive experimentation, aided by her husband Pierre Curie, Marie Curie was able to identify two new elements in pitchblende, which she called polonium (after her native Poland), and radium (after the Latin word for “ray”). Although the process of isolating radium involved processing a ton of pitchblende in order to obtain just a fraction of a gram of radium, even with similar levels of effort, the Curies found that it was impossible to isolate polonium. Later on, when the principle of radioactive decay was developed, scientists realized that the short half-life of polonium—138 days—was the reason for this problem.

Radium Reign

With the help of industrial partners who could produce radium much more quickly in their processing facilities than it was possible to do in the lab, the Curies began to develop new uses for this marvelous material. However, the Curies never became rich because of their discovery, but as a service to the scientific community and the rest of the world, freely shared their method of obtaining radium. One of the first uses of radium was as an anti-cancer treatment, owing to its observed ability to damage tissue. The resulting treatment, known as Curietherapy in France, and radiumtherapy elsewhere, is still used in some instances to treat cancer today.

However, as with any health fad, there are those who take it too far, usually for financial gain. Because radium was seen as providing health benefits in one area, its use was expanded to other areas for which there was no proven benefit. This was especially the case in the 1920s, when advertising campaigns for face creams with names such as Tho-Radia and Radior claimed that “the amazing Energy of Radium has proved a boon to the human skin.” What purchasers of these products didn’t realize was that the “glow” they were seeking was not necessarily the kind they would actually receive.

Losing Its Glow

In fact, the luminescent property of radium was precisely what made it attractive to manufacturers of clocks, watches, and other technical instruments, for whom its glow-in-the-dark ability was commercially advantageous. However, the use of radium-based paints for such applications was eventually found to be extremely dangerous, after many workers exposed to the paint died from the effects of radiation.

The growing awareness of radium’s toxicity made it seem less and less suited to general use, and when Marie Curie died in 1934, it was speculated that her exposure to radiation played a part in her death. Scientists now know that radium damages bone marrow particularly, because the body treats it as calcium, depositing it in the bones and providing it easy access to the marrow.

Although the benefits of radium fall far short of what it was once believed it could do, with careful handling radium still proves useful in medical treatment and scientific research. In addition, the story of its discovery is inspiring and laid the groundwork for many other important advances in science. But the next time you hear something being praised as a miracle cure-all, remember that the truth may be more complicated than it seems.—Morgen Jahnke
