Russia Invents Zap Gun to Down Drones

The Russian Defense Ministry has developed a powerful electromagnetic gun that can take drones, Russia"s official news agency Tass reports.

The "Stupor gun" is designed to "counter unmanned aerial vehicles, including copters, under direct visibility," Tass says, adding that a model of the weapon was debuted at the Army-2017 International Military-Technical Forum near Moscow.

The gun reportedly emits separate electromagnetic pulses to suppress channels used to operate a drone, which causes the drone to lose contact with its operator and crash.

Tass says the gun, which can be charged from a car battery, "should not be pointed towards people, manned aircraft, transport vehicles and animals."

Drones can conduct surveillance and conduct air strikes and are used by the military in situations where manned flight is too dangerous.
