Hip belt squats are a favorite of mine since I"m basically scared to do squats since I never have anyone spot me at the gym but the reason why they may be the best way to squat is because your lower back is taken entirely out of the movement and your legs (butt, hips and thighs) have to do all the work so if you"re used to squatting 400 pounds in the barbell squat...
Do not automatically assume you can belt squat 400 pounds. As a matter of fact you probably want to start off with 60% of your max to be safe just get an idea of how much you can do because in barbell squats your lower back and upper body muscles also contribute in some part of helping you complete the lift.
I usually advocate a lower rep range for increased muscle mass but I"ve gotten results using a high and low rep scheme on belt squats and I do this because I need to start off with high reps as a kind of a warm-up for my knees so my workout usual goes like this and the results are awesome...
Set 1= 20 reps
Set 2 = 18 reps
Set 3 = 15 reps
Set 4 =12 reps
Sets 5, 6 & 7 = 10 reps
Set 8 = 20-to-30 reps
It"s a brutal workout.
I usually tie the belt or the carabineer to the lowest loop on the bar so I can get a full range of motion for my butt, hips and thighs and if you have trouble getting a deeper range of motion then you need to stretch your calves, and hip flexors in order to get deeper but you"ll see that as you get stronger in the belt squat you"ll be able to squat deeper. lower body stretches: http://www.nowloss.com/how-to-stretch-warm-up.htm#butt-hip-thighs-hamstring-calf-stretches
