Lorde"s Kanye West "Love Lockdown" Cover in Chicago



Lorde found a creative way to honor Kanye West while performing in his hometown of Chicago. At the Allstate Arena on March 27, the 21-year-old singer performed an a cappella cover of West"s "Love Lockdown" off of his 2008 album 808s & Heartbreak. According to a music reporter at the concert, Lorde also said, "Thanks, Chicago! It must be nice to come from the same place as Kanye West."


The cover is beginning to garner attention for several reasons. For starters, it created a special and truly unique moment for her fans in attendance. Beyond that, however, many have begun speculating whether the cover in any way indicates a rift in her friendship with Taylor Swift, given Swift"s enduring feud with West.


In addition to covering "Love Lockdown," Lorde has also been weaving lyrics from West"s "Runaway" into her live performances of "Liability" off her latest album Melodrama. Instead of reading too much into it, however, we should simply enjoy the unexpected cover because this all can — and likely does — mean nothing.

My Dog Improves My Mental Health and Happiness in the Best Possible Ways



I"ve shuffled through a lot of frames in my life, both euphoric and traumatic. There was the tragedy in childhood that still causes me to jolt at the sound of sirens and the abusive relationship in early adulthood that nearly smothered my sense of self. But there was also the indescribable afternoon spent sipping Rosé while traversing across Napa Valley with my family and the experience of some of my wildest, most ambitious career goals being realized. Through the highs, lows, and everything in between, I have come to know for certain that nothing quite compares to a wet nose bonking up against me at the end of the day.


Five years ago, just days after my husband and I exchanged vows of forever under an oak tree on his family"s 200-year-old property, we made an Autumn drive through the country to find the other love of my life. We would name her Lucy.


She was one of three girls remaining in her litter of long-haired Dachshunds. She looked like a character Walt Disney would have drawn, cutting her gaze from side to side as though she was full of hope but void of expectation. My husband was drawn like a magnet to her, cooing, "Lacey, I like this one . . ." as he scooped her up from her blanket in a box and kissed her tiny snout softly. He then passed her over to me, and she curled her head into my neck. Her brown eyes locked into mine as if to say, "I"m home."


Half an hour later, my husband was jerking the car over to the side of the road because - this time - she had projectile vomited all of her puppy chow onto my neck. And it was sort of ominous. In the months that followed, she urinated into everything from the air vents in our home to my brand-new red suede booties, and once into my freshly blown-out hair while I stretched across the couch. Thankfully, life with her would become less frightful on the other side of puppyhood.



Our bond deepened every time she rolled onto her back, playfully wooing me for a belly rub. It expanded every time her fur stood at attention upon an "intruder" daring to cross our path. She"d bark and hop wildly, once even untying an electrician"s shoelaces when he took a step too close to me. I discovered that, although she has the stature of an oversize squirrel, she has the heart of a lion. And I learned all of the ways she would faithfully show up to comfort me - through silly arguments with girlfriends and inexplicable bouts of self-deprecation to the unexpected visits from thoughts carrying old traumas and the grief of the opportunity on high that dangled like a carrot before me, only to flutter away with the inevitable "sorry, girl - maybe next time."


She has taught me more about forgiveness, love, loyalty, and the sweetness of just being in the "now" than any book, motivational speech, or mentor ever has.

When I"m sick, it"s as though she is trying to conquer my woes with all of the might of her 15-pound body. Not long ago, I was plagued with food poisoning. I spent the night in a fetal position, groaning and shivering under the comforter. My husband rubbed my hand until he fell asleep. Lucy curled onto my pillow, her chin pressing against my forehead protectively. Anytime I dared to toss, turn, or pull away, she"d inch her way back to me, determined to keep her fur pressed against my clammy, aching skin.


When I"m anxious, she senses it. She will search the entire house to find me, then hover over me as though she is my guardian. One afternoon not long ago, I was sprawled across my yoga mat, staring blankly up at the ceiling, caught in a tornado of overwhelm that was brought on by an impossible to-do list. Just as the tears and F-bombs were about to flow, I saw her snout positioned mere inches from my face, her whiskers spread out and glistening in the golden afternoon sunlight like an armor over me. All I could do was let the laughter burst straight out of me.



In essence, my dog"s presence rattles me awake and alerts me to all of the beauty in the world. Each time my husband and I take her for walks, she smiles, trots, and wags her entire body in such a way that, for me, I don"t need much else in the way of a pep talk. She is carried by curiosity and wonder, whisked by the lightness of having breath. Every moment for her is an adventure. She is in awe of the birds, the squirrels, the smells, and the sun - just relishing the wind in her fur. The mere act of witnessing her being so alive, happy, and full of wonderment is enough to invite me to also be that alive, happy, and full of wonderment.


I"m sure some people think my adoration of her is excessive. Because, most of the time, she takes the limelight in my Instagram stories. I dote over her the way most people dote over their newborn babies. But I don"t care what anyone thinks. Lucy is the most abundant and majestic source of entertainment, hilarity, and comfort I"ve ever known. She may be an animal, but she is one of the most profound presences of light and truth in my life. She has taught me more about forgiveness, love, loyalty, and the sweetness of just being in the "now" than any book, motivational speech, or mentor ever has.

Martin Luther King III: Father"s Dream of Justice Not Yet Realized




As the 50th anniversary of the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. approaches, his dream of freedom, justice and equality for all humans still has not happened, his son, Martin Luther King III, said Saturday, pointing to the death of Stephon Clark, an unarmed black man who was shot and killed by police in his grandmother"s backyard.



"We just saw what happened in Sacramento just a few days ago," King told CNN. "A young man was shot, with a telephone in his hand, 20 times. One day, justice must be real for all mankind."



Clark was hit seven times from behind, according to autopsy results released Friday by a pathologist hired by his family. The findings that called into question the department"s assertion that the 22-year-old black man was facing officers and walking toward them when he was killed.



The National Civil Rights Museum in Memphis, where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated, is planning a all-day of remembrance on April 4 to commemorate his life and message.



The event will include performances and speeches, including from the Rev. Jesse Jackson and Rep. John Lewis, D-Georgia, both of whom spoke at King"s March on Washington in 1963.



"My mom always focused on [his] birthday, although on the date of his passing or his killing, we actually would always lay a wreath and have a kind of quiet ceremony," the younger King commented. "But in this context, it is a very interesting set of circumstances because this is right after the backdrop of a major demonstration around guns in Washington, D.C. just a week or so ago."



King said he does think his father"s words and actions still inspire people around the globe, but there is still the fact that the "triple evils of poverty, racism, and militarism and violence" are still in place in the United States.



"We have unquestionably at least 48 million people living in poverty in this country," said King. "That is unacceptable with a $20 trillion economy. We have racial issues that seem to be rising. I still think the vast majority of Americans are not, do not harbor racist views. But we still have work do around that which we will do now because the president raises the issue and finally militarism and violence is something that we have to continue to work on."



Meanwhile, he said he believes last week"s March for Our Lives in Washington was powerful because it was led by high school students, and that he was proud of his young daughter, nine-year-old Yolanda, for speaking.



"I haven"t seen that since 1963, when 3,000 students were arrested in Birmingham ...so how we should be observing this, and I have obviously mixed emotions about it, but it really is about continuing the work."



And when his daughter took the stage, King said seeing her there and addressing the crowd of thousands was "the most incredible feeling in my life other than her being born."



He said the family did not prompt his daughter, but did reach out to the Parkland students organizing the march to offer assistance.



"We then talked about this chant that she does about the future of this generation, and then we sent that to them," King said.



"In fact, we learned at 8:30 Saturday morning that she wanted her to come out and she was going to be a surprise guest," King said. "She had come to her own conclusion as to what she was going to say."



Guns are not a new concern for his daughter, King said. Two years ago, in February 2016, when the family visited the White House to view the bust of Martin Luther King Jr. that was placed in the Oval Office, his daughter then said she wanted to ask the president what he was going to do about guns.

3. Come down as deep as you can or allow the leg press sled to come down as deep and as close to your chest or torso as possible without hurting you lower back. Its inclusion in renowned Israeli chef Yotam Ottolenghi’s 2011 cookbook “Plenty” helped spread the word, and nowadays, Instagram is a steady source of tantalizing shakshouka shots.


While they have no direct connection to each other, Mexican huevos rancheros, Italian eggs in purgatory, and Turkish menemen (in which the eggs are scrambled) are all similar to shakshouka, proving that the combo of eggs and tomatoes is universally appealing, although all you need to do is taste it to know that.


You’re apt to find shakshouka on even the fanciest brunch menus these days, but while some places may have the nerve to sell it for $20 and up, there’s zero pretension when it comes to the dish. The name means, roughly, “shaken” or “mixed up,” which is reflective of shakshouka’s casual composition. You’re basically just nudging things around a pan (a cast iron skillet is the most common vessel, but whatever works). There are no theatrics, no tricks to master, no pitfalls except maybe potentially burning things, but moderate heat and occasional stirring easily prevent that. You can buy it in meal kit form, but you really don’t need to. You barely need a recipe, and then only the first time you make it.


If you want, whether it’s your first or fiftieth time cooking shakshouka, you can alter the basic dish by adding almost anything that appeals, like more vegetables, from chopped eggplant, peppers, potatoes, artichokes, and squash, to kale, spinach, chard, and other hearty greens. If you want to keep it vegetarian but add more substance, stir in beans, chickpeas, or lentils. And if you want meat, add that too—sausages like merguez or chorizo; ground beef, lamb, or chicken; whole pieces of poultry or meat; even fish or shellfish; anything goes. Season it with your favorite spices. Then sprinkle on as much cheese as you please, or leave it off entirely. Same goes for labneh (thickened yogurt), harissa or other hot sauce, and any garnishes, like olives, fresh herbs, fried shallots, preserved lemon… The choices are many, and they’re all yours.


You can even subtract and substitute for the main components, although it will no longer be traditional (and maybe not technically shakshouka)—but everywhere it’s enjoyed, there are countless variations offered, and personal spins on shakshouka are part of its beauty. In your own kitchen, the most important thing is that you’re making something you want to eat, anyway. So feel free to go with a green sauce based on leafy vegetables and/or herbs if you’re not feeling tomatoes, or swap in silken tofu for the eggs for a vegan version that still feels a lot like the real thing.


Once you’re done tinkering with—or just following—the basic formula, simply add pita, challah, or slices of any rustic bread for sopping up the sauce. You’ll be totally satisfied, and certain to come back for more.

This is a pretty classic version of the dish, streamlined and simple, with diced tomatoes, onion, bell pepper, garlic, cumin, and paprika, plus eggs of course. You can leave the yolks as runny as you like, or cook until they’re set. Get the recipe.

There are many ways to make green shakshouka: nestle the eggs in a mess of collard greens and kale; blend peas and lots of bright green herbs for the sauce; even use shaved brussels sprouts, spinach, and zucchini. But this version is more like a Mexican interpretation, with a sprightly green tomatillo sauce. When they’re in season, you could try substituting green tomatoes for some or all of the tomatillos. This one demonstrates how easy (and delicious) it is to add extras to your shakshouka, like eggplants, leafy greens, and chickpeas. Check your fridge for any languishing produce that would be good to toss in; the dish will be happy to embrace it. Get the recipe.

Shakshouka without eggs is really just a sauce, or maybe a tagine. But if you can’t or won’t eat them, try simmering soft dumplings of silken tofu in the tomatoes instead—for the protein, sure, but also to evoke the tender texture and floating-islands look of the poached eggs in the original. And no matter what kind you make, if you don’t mind cleaning two pans afterward, you can cook grains like kasha, couscous, quinoa, or rice and ladle the shakshouka over top. Get the recipe.

Executive Who Sold Self-Driving Truck Start-Up to Uber Departs

SAN FRANCISCO — One of the founders of Otto, a self-driving truck company founded by former Google employees and acquired by Uber, has left the ride-hailing service.

Lior Ron — who along with Anthony Levandowski sold Otto to Uber in 2016, six months after leaving Google — was in charge of Uber Freight, a truck shipment booking service. Most of Uber Freight’s business does not involve the company’s autonomous trucks.

The departure followed a fatal crash involving an Uber self-driving car in Tempe, Ariz. The police said the car, driving in autonomous mode, had failed to slow down before it struck and killed a woman who was walking her bicycle across a street.

Uber has stopped testing of its autonomous vehicles in Arizona, California, Pittsburgh and Toronto while investigators look into the accident. A week after Uber halted testing, Arizona’s governor ordered the company’s self-driving cars off state roads. Uber also pulled an application to renew its permit for testing autonomous vehicles in California.


CNBC reported Mr. Ron’s departure earlier on Wednesday.

An Uber spokesman, Matt Kallman, said the departure was unrelated to the crash in Tempe, but he would not elaborate on why Mr. Ron had left or the timing of his exit.



Uber executives have said self-driving car technology is a key to the company’s future. But the effort had become a headache long before the crash in Arizona.

ABC Has Renewed "Roseanne" Because Duh










Roseanne has been renewed for an 11th season after the huge ratings for the Tuesday premiere — 18.4 million viewers in Nielsen"s live-plus-same-day tally, a number that will climb with delayed viewing — surpassed ABC"s internal estimates and stunned television pundits. Roseanne"s premiere ratings were the highest for any comedy on any network since September 2014, and have since achieved mythological status, with President Trump calling Roseanne Barr to congratulate her, and a New York Times story recounting how ABC executives met the morning after Trump"s election to strategize about how to appeal to his voters.

Without saying Trump"s or Hillary Clinton"s name, the Roseanne premiere illustrated how the election has divided families, with Roseanne having voted for Trump and her sister, Jackie (Laurie Metcalf), being a supporter of Clinton (though she actually voted for Jill Stein in a panic). Barr has been a vocal Trump supporter, and a promoter of far-right opinions and conspiracies on Twitter. It"s the show"s symbolism in the Trump era that has launched a thousand thinkpieces and tweetstorms, with Roxane Gay pointing out in the New York Times that the show promotes the myth that the working class voted for Trump. (She cites the statistic that "41 percent of voters earning less than $50,000 voted for Mr. Trump while 53 percent voted for Hillary Clinton.") And as Mark Harris noted on Twitter, "the only confirmed Trump voter is crazy old white grandma. It can almost be read as a demographic insult."

Apart from its own success and renewal, the show has inspired some great writing and analysis. Whether it changes television programming going forward remains to be seen.

The current season of the revived Roseanne will include nine episodes; Season 11 will have 13 episodes.

Post-16-Mile-Run Leg Twitches



I"ve been running for 2 1/2 years and I"d hoped it would help relieve Restless Leg syndrome. Not so much. Even running marathon distances doesn"t relieve the restless legs. Now, after runs, I get to be a freak show for the kids by showing them the "possessed leg muscles". Anyone else experience this? Anything to be concerned about? Even if I tense up the calf muscle (basically causing a cramp) the twitching doesn"t subside for hours.

Palestinians launch massive #GreatReturn protest on Gaza border (PHOTOS, VIDEOS) — RT World News





Thousands of Palestinians are gathering along the border of the Gaza Strip and Israel for a massive, six week-long, protest calling for the right of return for Palestinian refugees to what is now the Jewish state.

The ‘Great Return’ got underway on Friday as Palestinians gathered to hold a mass rally to commemorate Land Day, which marks the killing of six unarmed civilians by Israeli forces in 1976.

Hamas said as many as 100,000 Palestinians will take part in Friday’s massive demonstration. The protest coincides with the week-long Jewish holiday of Passover, which could lead to an increase in tensions in an already-volatile region.

Tent cities have been set up by Palestinian activists, backed by factions of Fatah and Hamas, at five locations along the border. They feature medical facilities, media zones, portable toilets, running water and electricity. Thousands of people had already started to gather on Friday morning.

The protests are set to culminate in May as Israel celebrates the 70th anniversary of its independence, which Palestinians call Nakba (castastrophe) day.

The Israeli military has massed soldiers along the Gaza border in advance of the demonstration. Special forces, tank units, infantry and more than 100 snipers have been deployed in a significant show of force.

“We have deployed more than 100 sharpshooters, who were called up from all of the military’s units, primarily from the special forces,” Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot said, Ynet news reports. “If lives are in jeopardy, there is permission to open fire.”

A Hamas official warned that there will be a reaction to any Israeli provocations. "We don"t want to see a bloodbath. Just a quiet protest,” he said to Israel Hayom, warning that "if there are Israeli provocations and if Israel deliberately harms protesters or our people we will mount a harsh response.”

15 Amazing Food Storage Containers That Aren’t Plastic Wrap

After you spent the last hour whipping up a healthy dinner, just looking at the leftovers piled in pots and pans leaves you exhausted.


Clean up is the worst. Why can’t those leftovers magically put themselves away? You want to wrap those extra veggies, that half of an avocado, and that leftover pasta in the bowl in plastic wrap and go binge watch Netflix.


But even though the undeniable convenience of plastic wrap pulls at you, you know you won’t use it. (You’d give yourself a guilt complex for days.)


“More people are realizing every day that the plastic they throw away has long-lasting consequences for our oceans, our soil, our drinking water supply, and the health of our bodies and our planet,” says Sarah Kaeck, founder of Bee’s Wrap, which makes reusable organic cotton wrap as an alternative to plastic wrap. “If we don’t make changes to the amount of plastic we’re consuming as a society, we’re on track to see more plastic than fish in the oceans by 2050.”


One study found that of the 6.3 billion metric tons of plastic waste we’ve generated, only 9 percent has been recycled, only 12 percent has been incinerated, and the vast majority—79 percent—has built up in landfills or the natural environment.


And one-time use plastic wrap and baggies have much to do with that problem.

“Plastic wrap or sandwich baggies are used for such a short period of time. And they’re difficult (and impossible, in some places) to recycle,” Kaeck says. “Most end up in the trash. And then, despite being used for just a brief period in one’s home, they persist forever in our environment.”


So, What’s That Plastic Wrap Doing to Your Health?


Besides adding unnecessary waste to the world, storing food in single-use plastic means worrying about your health.


“I always knew that plastic was crappy for the environment. There’s no evidence to suggest it ever biodegrades. But until my wife and I had kids, I didn’t really consider what effect it had on our health,” says Steve Reble, Co-Owner of etee (Everything Touches Everything Else), which makes beeswax and essential oil reusable food wraps.


“A little bit of time and digging taught me that it may also leach toxins into our food, which means we’re ingesting it,” he says. “While we wait for 100 percent confirmation from the scientific community, I’d rather keep plastic off my boys’ food.”


Kaeck says she also felt concern about the health effects of plastic. “I was worried about the implications of plastic for both my family’s health and the health of the planet,” she says of why she wanted to eliminate plastic wrap from her kitchen.

Move over plastic wrap. So many better, more sustainable options exist. And many of these already live in your kitchen.


1. Mason jars



Oh, the mason jar. What can’t it do?


Mason jars work great as food storage containers. Whether you’re putting away the leftovers from dinner or storing dry goods, like rice, beans, and flour.


“We use a lot of mason jars and glass jars at home,” Kaeck says.“They last forever, are perfect for transporting beverages or soups, and serve all kinds of purposes in our kitchen.”


Reble also uses mason jars regularly. “My favourite (We’re Canadian. We add extra ‘u’s whenever we can.), plastic-free food storage—aside from etee—hands down is the glass mason jar,” he says. “Every single day I make a giant batch of smoothies and split it up into multiple jars for the fam to share. I’d be lost without my mason jars.”


2. Leftover jars from other food


Guess what? You don’t need to buy anything new to get awesome food storage containers.


Head out to your recycling bin and grab your extra glass jars from pickles, olives, pasta sauce, and salsa.

And, you can drop wax paper in your compost pile, but only if you have a soy-based, biodegradable wax paper. (You don’t want paraffin wax in your compost. Yuck!)


7. Aluminum foil


While you don’t want to use aluminum foil all the time for food storage (that’s not very sustainable), this shiny kitchen staple works well in a pinch.


Rinse off any food residue and you can reuse a piece of aluminum foil multiple times. And some curbside recycling programs even accept it. (Hint: Clean it off first.)


8. Paper bags


Use paper bags to store fragile produce in the fridge, like berries, dates, and figs. Paper bags also work well to ripen produce. Speed up ripening by placing avocados, tomatoes, and pears in paper bags and set them on the counter.


Paper bags aren’t super reusable but you can compost them.


9. Dish towels


Need to keep a salad cool while you finish making dinner? Covering a plate or a bowl in a dish towel works great for short-term food storage.


10. Cheesecloth


Besides using cheesecloth to make your own ghee butter or cold brew coffee, you can also use it to store foods that need a little ventilation, like certain produce and herbs. And cheese, of course.


11. Cloth napkins


Wrap up sandwiches, fruits and veggies, and pretty much any food that’s not liquid, in a cloth napkin for quick storage.


12. Fabric bowl covers


You already have a bunch of bowls. So, why buy more food storage containers?


Use bowls and fabric bowl covers for simple food storage. Cover berries, pasta, a salad, and whatever else with a fabric bowl cover and you’re good to go.

15. Reusable food wrap


Perhaps the ultimate plastic wrap alternative is reusable food wraps.
