Writer Oliver Berry visited Beer’s Beach at Lyme Bay in Devon for our feature on the best of this glorious English county.
‘We were chatting to the owner of Beer’s fish shop, who was reminiscing about the wreck of the MSC Napoli nearby – it was a huge event at the time, with TV crews and containers everywhere, and it happened to be the tenth anniversary that week. I like this shot because it illustrates that Beer’s fishing is still done in the old-fashioned way, in small boats launched straight off the sand’.

Features Editor Orla Thomas discovered imperial splendor and Soviet history galore for our feature on the historic city – including the colourful Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood.
‘Photographer Gary Latham and I had seen pictures of it before, but most were taken from a similar vantage point. We became fixated on finding a fresh angle for this exuberant piece of Russian architecture, and visited no fewer than five rooftop bars. There were two venues with great views – PMI bar and the Kempinski Hotel Moika 22’s top-floor Bellevue Brasserie. We toasted our success at the Kempinski with a couple of its house Negronis’.

Writer Christa Larwood was exploring Havana’s old town, Havana Vieja, for our insider guide to the city when she met this local smoking a cigar.
‘Havana really is a place that fulfills all the best stereotypes of Cuba. You do encounter people dancing in the streets, hear music all day and all night long, and see people smoking cigars – not only because they enjoy smoking, but because it’s a point of national pride.’

This month’s photo story features Tyler Haughey’s series on the mid-century modern motels of New Jersey’s Wildwoods – including the Monaco, pictured. Tyler explains how he got the shot:
‘Neon is best observed at night, and with night comes long exposures. With this motel sitting just a few metres off the beach, it was extra windy and I had to pull down on the centre column of the tripod while I pressed the shutter release to ground my camera and stave off any movement during exposure. I positioned my camera as square to the motel’s facade as possible, to diminish perspective distortion and allow the building to shine in its mid-century glory.’
