Giuliani Promises Exiles Trump Will Bring Down Iran Regime

The collapse of Iran’s Islamic regime “is around the corner,” and the U.S. will keep increasing sanctions until it happens, President Donald Trump’s attorney Rudy Giuliani told an exiled Iranian opposition group.

The former New York mayor added at an event near Paris that he was speaking “as a private American citizen,” not on behalf of the Trump administration. Giuliani isn’t known to have inside knowledge of U.S. foreign-policy plans.

Speaking to the Mujahedeen-e-Khalq, or People’s Mujahedeen of Iran, a group that for years was on the U.S.’s terrorism list, Giuliani said European nations and former President Barack Obama had appeased the Islamic regime and said “Trump doesn’t turn his back on freedom fighters.”

“This government is about to collapse, and this is the time to turn on the pressure,” Giuliani told a crowd of about 1,000 flag-waving MEK followers. “Thank God my president turned his back on that very dangerous nuclear deal with Iran. We are not going to do business with the world’s top sponsor of terrorism.”

Europe “should be ashamed of itself” for continuing to buy Iranian oil, Giuliani added. “I can’t figure it out why leaders of Western democracies want to prop up the agreement that will inevitably make an insane dictatorship.”

Palestinian Blame

Since joining Trump’s legal team in April, Giuliani has continued to accept outside speaking engagements in the U.S. and abroad. He declined to comment Saturday when asked about his speaking fee.

In early June, Giuliani spoke at a capital-markets conference in Tel Aviv, where he praised Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, blamed the Palestinians for lack of a peace deal, criticized legal probes against Netanyahu and Trump, and defended the president’s attitude toward women.

Giuliani also spoke to an Iranian anti-government group in Washington in early May, correctly predicting that Trump would pull the U.S. out of the Iran nuclear agreement.

Also on the podium on Saturday were former U.S. House Speaker and informal Trump adviser Newt Gingrich, former FBI Director Louis Freeh, former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations Bill Richardson, former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper, two former French foreign ministers, and five members of the British Parliament.

In Exile

The annual meeting is hosted by the National Council of Resistance of Iran, which considers itself a sort of parliament in exile but is dominated by the MEK. NCRI leader Maryam Rajavi spoke before Giuliani, and said recent economic protests in Iran were signs the regime is near to collapse. The NCRI says it supports a democratic Iran with separation of religion and state.

Giuliani has spoken at MEK events for almost a decade. Trump’s current National Security Adviser John Bolton has attended their events in the past, as has James Jones, who held the same post under Obama.

A Christian Science Monitor investigation in 2011 said the group pays more than $25,000 to its speakers. The MEK denies paying the speakers, saying it only covers expenses, and that officials like Giuliani support the group because they share its vision.

Persian Diaspora

The MEK was formed in the 1960s and opposed both the Shah’s regime and the Islamic Republic after the 1979 revolution. Studies by both the French Foreign Ministry and the Rand Corporation have concluded that the group lost almost all its support in Iran after siding with Iraq in the brutal 1980-1988 war, although Saturday’s meeting included recent footage of protesters unveiling MEK banners across Iran.

The group is based in a heavily guarded compound in a Paris suburb, with its former military wing now in Albania after the U.S. brokered its move from bases it had occupied in Iraq since the Iran-Iraq war. Attendees at the Paris rally were mostly from the Persian diaspora in Germany, France, the U.K. and the Netherlands.

The U.S. listed MEK as a terrorist organization in 1997 because of its history of bombings and assassinations. The group renounced violence in 2001 and began an energetic public relations campaign that resulted in it being delisted by the European Union in 2009 and the U.S. in 2012.

The Best Way to Grill Asparagus

Before I learned this method, my grilled asparagus always ended up stringy, charred, and shriveled. I had all but given up hope that it could ever taste good, unless wrapped in bacon. However, while at a dinner party, I learned a new way of cooking it that is foolproof.

  1. Buy thick, hearty stalks of asparagus. These are less likely to fall through grill grates. Prep the asparagus by snapping off the woody ends and then peeling the stalk skin.

  2. Lightly coat the asparagus in a neutral-tasting, high-heat oil, using your hands to evenly coat each stalk.

  3. In a medium-high grill, place the asparagus stalks perpendicular to the grill grates. Close the top and allow the asparagus to cook/steam for approximately 30 seconds. Open the grill top, use tongs to flip toss the asparagus around, close the top, and cook for another 30 seconds.

  4. Remove from the grill and salt and pepper to taste.

That"s it! You can try leaving the asparagus on longer, if you prefer grill marks, but you will find this quick method cooks the asparagus through while maintaining a slight crunch.

21 Surprisingly Inaccurate Movies That Are Based On True Stories

What the film"s about: The life of celebrated physicist, Stephen Hawking, is chronicled, including his academic achievements, relationship to Jane Hawking, and his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

What happened in real life: While the film doesn"t stray too far from Jane"s book, Travelling to Infinity, it does romanticise a number of key points in their relationship. Although Jane and Stephen are shown to disagree about their beliefs in religion, they still challenge one another in intellectual debates about God"s existence. At one point Stephen even admits to the possibility of a higher existence. In her book, however, Jane writes of those conversations becoming more "personal, divisive, and hurtful" as Stephen"s atheism intensified over the years. When Stephen decides to leave Jane for Elaine, his nurse, the movie depicts their separation as sad but mutual. This is not at all how Jane describes it in her memoir. Elaine and her husband accompanied the Hawkings on a vacation where a heated argument erupted. Afterwards, Stephen announced his decision to live with Elaine. Besides Jane and Stephen"s relationship, there are also some inaccuracies with Stephen"s diagnosis and the manner by which Jane finds out about it.

America Inc and the rage against Beijing

ONE of the naughty secrets about America’s trade war with China is that it has the tacit support of much of America’s business establishment. For the past 20 years big firms’ default mode has been Sino-infatuation. Schumpeter attended a dinner in 2016 between the captains of USA Inc and Li Keqiang, China’s premier, and you could taste the deference in the air more keenly than the beef on the plates. But lately bosses’ mood has flipped into a hostility that risks becoming jingoistic and unhelpful.

While a few Sino-dependent companies such as Apple and Boeing want to lower the temperature, many others consider themselves mistreated by China; for them, it is payback time. This stance has two flaws. The sense of victimhood is over the top; American firms have done reasonably well in China. And it is stoking the White House to escalate a conflict that may spill over from trade tariffs into a war over investment by multinationals.

China may have been bad for steel workers in Cleveland but the calculation for companies is different. Globalised production has lowered labour costs. Since China’s entry into the World Trade Organisation in 2001, profit margins in America have been 22% above their 50-year trend. And companies engage not just in trade, but in cross-border investment too.

It is this investment that riles American firms. China originally promised to open up its vast market, bosses complain, but today it bars companies from some industries and forces them into joint ventures with partners that steal their intellectual property. Chinese firms get cheap state loans. The “Made in China 2025” plan envisions that foreign firms are excluded from new areas such as artificial intelligence. The overall result, bosses grumble, is that American firms are puny in China, making 4% of their global sales there. Champions such as Amazon and Goldman Sachs have either flopped or been largely excluded. Only perhaps a dozen companies make over $1bn of profits a year from China, including General Motors and a few tech-hardware stars.

Such complaints are valid, but the picture is lopsided. Most bosses love China’s state-run model when it involves them getting privileged access to its omnipotent leaders. Other big countries have infuriating investment curbs, both explicit and tacit, including India and France. The transfer of know-how from rich countries to poorer ones, by hook or crook, is an integral part of economic development. Firms often fail abroad—there is no God-given right to triumph. And few bosses bother to calibrate their China problem. They should ask themselves how big their business in China ought to be—or, what would “fair” look like?

Schumpeter has considered four measures of Chinese corporate unfairness, using data from Morgan Stanley and Bloomberg. The first is the weight of China in the foreign sales that American firms bring in. It stands at 15%; if it was in line with China’s share of world GDP, it would be 20%. This shortfall amounts to a small 1% of American firms’ global sales (both foreign and domestic). America Inc is similarly underweight in the rest of Asia, but there is much less fighting talk about South Korea or Japan.

The second test is whether there is parity in the commercial relationship. Firms based in China make sales to America almost exclusively through goods exports, which were worth $506bn last year. American companies make their sales to China both through exports and through their subsidiaries there, which together delivered about $450bn-500bn in revenue. Again, there is not much of a gap. American firms’ aggregate market share in China, of 6%, is almost double Chinese firms’ share in America, based on the sales of all listed firms.

The third yardstick is whether American firms underperform other multinationals and local firms. In some cases failure is not China-specific. Walmart has had a tough time in China, but has also struggled in Brazil and Britain. Uber sold out to a competitor in China, but has done the same in South-East Asia. American consumer and industrial blue chips are typically of a similar scale in China to their nearest rivals. Thus the sales of Boeing and Airbus, Nike and Adidas, and General Electric and Siemens are all broadly in line with each other. Where America has a comparative advantage—tech—it leads. Over half of USA Inc’s sales in China are from tech firms, led by Apple, Intel and Qualcomm. Overall, American firms outperform. For the top 50 that reveal data, sales in China have risen at a compound annual rate of 12% since 2012. That is higher than local firms (9%) and European ones (5%).

The final measure is whether American firms are shut out of some sectors. This is important as China shifts towards services and as the smartphone market, a goldmine, matures. The answer is clearly “yes”. Alphabet, Facebook and Netflix are nowhere, and Wall Street firms are all but excluded from the mainland. Chinese firms, however, can make a similar complaint. The market share of all foreign firms in Silicon Valley’s software and internet activities, and on Wall Street, is probably below 20%. America’s national-security rules, thickets of regulation, lobbying culture and political climate make it inconceivable that a Chinese firm could play a big role in the internet or in finance there.

The great wail about China

Far-sighted bosses know their stance on China must reflect a balanced assessment, not a delusional vision of globalisation in which anything less than a triumph is considered a travesty. But their voices are being drowned out. The shift of the business establishment to hawkishness on China has probably emboldened the White House and also led the Treasury and Department of Commerce to be more combative. Most big firms are blasé about tariffs; they can pass on the cost to clients. Few export lots to China. But soon China will run out of American imports to subject to retaliatory tariffs; in a tit-for-tar war, beating up American firms’ Chinese subsidiaries is a logical next step. USA Inc’s Sino-strop would then end up enabling the opposite of what it wants.

The best places to find queer joy on Instagram

This post is part of Me, online, Mashable"s ongoing series digging into online identities.

If you were a queer kid growing up in the early "10s, Tumblr, not school, was where you found community.

Tumblr was home to some of the internet"s gayest Disney Princess memes. It was where you went for the best transmasc fashion, queer Harry Potter fan fiction, lesbian spells, and sometimes even a little bit of love. Queer teens disproportionately used the platform, studies found.

But Tumblr"s financials are bleak, and its role in queer culture has quietly diminished. Instead, it"s Instagram — an equally visual medium somewhat sheltered from Reddit"s trolls, Twitter"s bots, and Facebook"s morons — to which queer culture has moved.

And it"s a beautiful thing. There"s just so much greatness to witness, experience, and fave.

Here are a few of the best queer accounts on Instagram, from queer Appalachian meme culture to LGBTQIA+ astrology— and some non-tearful reminiscing about queer platforms past.

1. For "All things dyke and beautiful," aka, vintage photos of K.D. Lang, Godimsuchadyke

Unlike many queer accounts on Instagram, the account"s founder chooses to keep Godimsuchadyke anonymous. The result is less a glimpse of one person"s life than it is a bird"s-eye view of queer women"s culture, history, and art.

It"s hands down the best place on the web to find hot vintage photos of Ellen and contemporary paeans to Lena Waithe. Think of it as a collage board of 21st- and late 20th-century queer women"s life.

"When I started Godimsuchadyke, it transformed Instagram from a platform that I didn’t find very useful beyond content consumption to a platform where I felt that I could share freely," the account founder told Mashable. "I think a lot of that sense of freedom has to do with my decision to keep the account anonymous and also to keep the posts curatorial, as opposed to sharing images of myself or my personal life."

It"s a phenomenal account for anybody, but particularly those in the Xennial queer community desperate to see images of "90s dykes other accounts lack.

While @Godimsuchadyke is proud of their work on Instagram, they"re also making a call for increased representation on the platform, namely: "more archival and cultural accounts that are run by QPOC, trans people, and people with a wide array of experiences with diverse bodies, socioeconomic backgrounds, gender expressions, and sexual identities."

2. For nerds who love to read about LGBTQIA+ history: queerbible

Account founder Jack Guinness solicits people to write about their favorite LGBTQ heroes for queerbible, then posts snippets of their always poignant essays on Instagram. There"s also really charming original art, for those of us who hate to read more than 100 words on Instagram.

As a queer person, I"m not afraid to admit I always like to read about other people like me throughout history. Queerbible provides the super-gay history my high school textbooks just didn"t.

PETER HUJAR: CHRISTOPHER ST PIER, 1976 Today on The Queer Bible: ‘Harald Smart here, taking over to introduce a selection of photographs by Peter Hujar, accompanying my essay on his life and work, now live on The Queer Bible. // Our penultimate photo is Christopher Street Pier #2 (Crossed Legs) taken in 1976 // During the 1970s the shipyards of Manhattan’s Lower West Side, which had fallen into postindustrial dilapidation, became a virtually lawless annexe for communities living on the margins of society. Hundreds of gay men explored and occupied the spaces that were made available there during this time, turning the haunting, broken buildings into makeshift canvases for radical art, and into a sprawling sexual cruising ground shot through with danger. Hujar’s photographs of this precarious pre-AIDS utopia illustrate crumbling, deserted interiors - walls covered in poetic verse or lewd, witty cartoons - contrasting them with the scantily-clad bodies sunbathing and making merry out on the riverside during the summer months.’ . Peter Hujar: Speed of Life runs until May 20th 2018, at The Morgan Library & Museum . @h__smart #queerhistory #queerhistorymatters #queerbible #lgbt #lgbtq #lgbtqia #gayinstagram #gayinsta #lesbianhistory #sarahkane #gay #gayworld #gaypride #gaylife #gaylove #gayrights #gaygram #queer #queerart #lgbt #lgbtq #lgbtmemes #lgbtproud #queerhistory #andywarhol #candydarling #peterhujar #queerhistorymatters #lgbtqhistorymonth . © Peter Hujar Archive, LLC, courtesy Pace/MacGill Gallery, New York and Fraenkel Gallery, San Francisco @themorganlibrary

3. and 4. For the coolest contemporary queer superheroes:  Hayley Kiyoko + Janelle Monae

We all need celebrities to fantasize and gossip about with our equally mildly shallow friends. Kiyoko has been called the "lesbian Jesus." Janelle Monae made pansexual a household term.

For that, they deserve all our likes and love. The best place for that? Instagram.

5. For the best queer rural Appalachian memes (and social services), Queerappalachia

Queerappalachia is Instagram"s best account for rural queer Appalachianism, even though competition is, uh, limited. It provides breaking Appalachian news, Dolly Parton memes, BDSM gingerbread iconography, and addiction recovery services for queer and trans Appalachians through a telehealth program.

"These queer [Appalachian] kids need to know about people who got out and did things," Gina Mamone, one of the founders of the account, told Mashable in May. "And that it"s okay for them to stay! Stay home and build things. Or not. Whatever they want to do, it"s okay. They"re okay."

6. For LGBT history, high and low: LGBT_History

If you"re the type of person who complains that LGBT history was so much cooler back in the day, this account is for you. LGBT_History goes back — all the way back — and provides an eclectic collection of cultural images at all points along the queer timelines. The account, which has more than 283,000 followers, reflects on key moments in history as well as minor cultural shifts.

It"s delightful to look at the protest aesthetic of generations past. Teachers and gay fashionistas, take note.

7. For the history they never taught you in school: BlackLesbianArchives

Queer history often bends to the cis, white, and gay. Even if you don"t care about history, BlackLesbianArchives is an awesome corrective to the trend. At fewer than 1,000 followers, the account doesn"t currently have the following of some of the others on this list, which is exactly why you should follow it. The account zigzags back and forth through crucial moments black lesbian history.

"The BLA was created in June 25, 2017, due to the lack of resources and representation of Black Lesbian history on the web," the account"s founder, Krü Maekdo, told Mashable. "As I started coming into myself, I started to research history on my people of the past. I"m a huge history archivist, so having this information available is crucial to me. I figured if I"m searching for this, then I know there"s other people in the world probably wondering where we at."

Black Lesbian Archives has since expanded into an exhibit at Affinity Community Services in Chicago.

8. For overall excellence in funny memes: Xenaworrierprincess

Let"s not lie, 2018 is a low point for planet Earth. But Xenaworrierprincess offers some of the funniest damn queer memes on the internet, and for that, we should be grateful.

"@xenaworrierprincess is a niche lesbian meme page and queer advice zine. I started making memes after moving to a winter-y, strip mall city in the midwest for a Women"s Studies grad school program," Madeline Court, the account"s founder, told Mashable. "I was researching and writing about lesbian culture all day, but I didn"t know any lesbians. It was a really surreal, lonely relationship to my sexuality," she says. "I started making memes and sharing them on my personal Insta because I wanted to feel some kind of connection."

XenaWorrierPrincess doesn"t think that Instagram always supports their queer artists — it"s not uncommon for the platform to take down posts that include the word "dyke" — but Court is glad the platform doesn"t seem to have the same negative energy Tumblr once did: "Instagram prizes curation and deliberateness, I think. It"s also a photo app; captions and comments are secondary. Tumblr was really, really text-heavy. A lot of the queer discourse was bad. We were all babies, trying to make sense of the world without any lived experience."

9. For representation that matters: BlairImani

Blair Imani is a black queer Muslim activist and, with more than 28,000 followers, an Instagram star. Imani"s account defies constricting stereotypes that people can"t be queer and Muslim or a person of color.

"A lot of people assume that I"m homophobic, or that queer Muslims could not and did not exist. I do exist," Imani told Teen Vogue recently.

Her Instagram is testament.

10. For all the best queer women"s history, high and low: Herstory

With more than 133,000 followers, Herstory is the leading queer women-specific history account on Instagram.

"I started the lesbian culture Instagram h_e_r_s_t_o_r_y, which I have been running for about three and a half years now. I post mostly herstoric photos and images from the 1800s to the late 1990s," founder Kelly Rakowski told Mashable. "It all happened organically. I didn’t plan for it to have been so popular. People seem to really respond the images and stories I post. About one and a half years ago I started @herstorypersonals, now renamed @_Personals_, on Instagram. It’s a dating and community account where followers write personals based on old-school newspaper personals ads. I’m currently fundraising on Kickstarter to turn this account into a text-based dating and community app for queers."

11. For queer astrology that"ll make you feel all the feelings: Chani Nicholas

Astrology is having a moment, and queer astrologers like Chani Nicholas are leading the way.

You can head to her Instagram for the best queer-friendly, loving, affirming horoscopes on the internet.

"Queer, trans, and gender nonconforming folx, and many marginalized communities, in my experience, have always been attuned to wisdom traditions, art practices, mythologies, and story-telling that explore the value of life beyond the normative conditions we"ve been given, but cannot exist within joyfully," Nicholas told Mashable earlier this year.

Mercury enters Cancer today, reminding us that when we don’t have people and places where we can articulate our feelings, they are so much more of a burden to work through. Emotions need to be expressed. Unpacked. Investigated. Left alone they fester. Twist themselves into strange monsters that lurk in the shadows of our lives. Threaten to wreck what is working. . The world is a dumpster fire of injustice. It is constructed to keep us separate from our power. From our wisdom. From our wildness. We need to both construct, and get ourselves to, the spaces that reflect our beauty and our becoming. The spaces that help us sort through the situations that bewilder, betray, and become too difficult to carry alone. . Each interaction that is done in kindness can become one of those spaces. . This month’s new moon workshop goes into great detail in regards to Mercury’s journey as it will trigger the July 12th eclipse point as it opposes Pluto. If you want to know more, please join me for A Workshop for The New Moon in Gemini and The Full Moon in Capricorn, which is now available for immediate download. . In it you’ll receive meditations, altar suggestions, and rituals specific to your sign for both the new and full moon. I’ve geared the whole course to help cleanse and clear in preparation for this summer’s eclipses as well. Hope you enjoy! #Tuesday #Mercury #NewMoon #Gemini #Astrology #ResetYourSystems

12. For excellence in Samira Wiley: Whodatlikedat

Samira Wiley doesn"t provide queer history or astrological wisdom on her account, and that"s okay. Sometimes all you need is a simple, relentlessly positive, thirsty queer account in your feed. Bonus: she"s apparently in a healthy, happy marriage that should make all of us who"ve experienced queer drama feel really good.

13. Because we all need our Queer Eye fix: Jonathan Van Ness

Jonathan Van Ness is a ray of queer sunshine, and we"re all desperate for a little light in these sad times. His account features some of the best selfies on the whole damn site. Bless him.

14. If you feel like you want to understand queer culture but don"t get half the terms: gayglossary

Listen. I"m queer and 34 years old, and I still feel like my queer vocabulary is out of date. Gayglossary provides helpful explainers and super-pretty illustrations to make learning all the less irritating. At fewer than 1,000 followers, gayglossary is still a young account, but it"s growing, as well it should.

"I wanted to create a really visual glossary that helps to make sense of all LGBTQIAA+ identifying language. Honestly, even a lot of the people I started talking to about the idea didn"t even know what LGBTQIAA+ stood for," Kate Carter, the account"s founder, told Mashable. "Which made it even more obvious there was a need for a modern resource."

If you"ve retired from Tumblr or can"t find queer community in your hometown or even your big city, you"re not alone. The platforms, not the verticals, are where you"ll find the best in queer culture.

There"s so much queer excellence out there. You just need to know who to follow.

What’s the Difference Between Regular Lemons and Meyer Lemons?

What

Some produce is obviously special—take always-stunning dragon fruit, for example, or perfect, in-season peaches and berries, which are here for a short while and then gone until next year. Other fruit seems more ho-hum, and easy to take for granted. Lemons, for instance; we see them every time we go to the store, and they’re useful for lots of different dishes, but not terribly exciting. The exception to that rule are Meyer lemons. When they show up in early spring, people swoon. But what makes them so special, and how are they different from regular lemons anyway? Read on to find out.

The most apparent and important difference when it comes to using each type of lemon is the taste. Conventional lemons (which are generally either Eureka lemons or Lisbon lemons, essentially interchangeable) are tart enough to make your mouth pucker up. Meyer lemons taste recognizably lemony, and they do have acidity too, but significantly less than Eurekas or Lisbons, and are sweet enough that they can be added raw to various dishes; although you probably still wouldn’t want to eat one whole like you would an orange, you can mix chunks or slices into salads and salsa.

The zest of both regular lemons and Meyer lemons is fragrant and bright, but Meyer lemon zest has a more floral and even subtly spicy depth to it. The peel on a Meyer lemon is thinner too, and there’s much less bitter white pith beneath it, which means you can eat the entire fruit (sans seeds) in certain preparations—however, if you want to do that, be sure your fruit is organic and untreated with wax or other coatings, or else you’ve scrubbed it well under hot water to dissolve any residue.

regular (Eureka or Lisbon) lemons

Conventional lemons, Yuliia Fesyk/Shutterstock

Before lemons became a culinary crop, they were grown as ornamental plants, which makes sense when you behold a beautiful tree hung with bright citrus fruit. When you gaze at the fruit itself, you can see that Meyer lemons are smaller, often rounder, and smoother-skinned than their more common oblong and frequently-bumpy cousins. Meyer lemons are a deeper, more orange-toned color than sunny yellow Eureka and Lisbon lemons (both inside and out).

The other thing that makes Meyer lemons so attractive is that they’re comparatively elusive. They usually show up in November or December and disappear by March. Their limited window of availability, coupled with their more fragile nature, which makes shipping them more difficult, naturally makes them more expensive than hardier, year-round regular lemons too.

Meyer lemons, AndreyCherkasov/Shutterstock

So, what can you do if you want to make a Meyer lemon recipe and you don’t have any of the titular ingredient on hand? Substitute a mix of equal parts regular fresh lemon juice and orange or tangerine juice (the latter is a bit more complex and floral). Similarly, you can use equal parts Eureka lemon zest and orange or tangerine zest to stand in for Meyer lemon zest if need be. Since Meyer lemons, which are native to China, are said to be a hybrid of lemons and mandarin oranges, you can also use mandarin juice (or zest) in concert with the regular lemon juice/zest, instead of navel orange or tangerine. Basically, you’ve got options.

You can also make a Meyer lemon recipe with conventional lemon juice or zest instead, but the results will be much tangier and far less sweet, so you may need to adjust other ingredients, like sugar or whatever sweetener is called for. Conversely, when Meyer lemons are in season and you want to add them to everything, choose your applications wisely. If the goal is to brighten a dish with a shot of acid, Meyer lemons won’t have as big of an impact and may be wasted—but they’ll still lend their own unique character to things like simple vinaigrettes and cocktails (speaking of, when you’ve got ’em, make our Meyer Lemon Disgestif to extend the pleasure even when the season’s over). You can try making Meyer lemonade too, though it’ll be a pricey pitcher. Ultimately, as is the case with anything you make, you can—and should—always taste and adjust the flavor until it’s just right (read: precisely to your own liking).

Try some of these recipes to spark your imagination—and your taste buds.

Meyer Lemon Thyme Icebox Cake

Meyer Lemon Thyme Icebox Cake

She Wears Many Hats

This beautiful icebox cake is simple to make, although if you’re feeling extra ambitious, try swapping in our Meyer Lemon Black Pepper Cookies for the store-bought lemon or vanilla wafers. They’ll add another layer of savory-sweet intrigue to the fabulously fragrant cake. Get the recipe.

Meyer Lemon Tart

Meyer Lemon Tart

The Food Charlatan

A lightly salted shortbread crust and a dash of honey in the filling are unexpectedly brilliant complements to this sweet and floral Meyer lemon tart. Get the recipe.

Meyer Lemon and Rosemary Focaccia Bread

Meyer Lemon and Rosemary Focaccia Bread

The View From Great Island

While Meyer lemons are wonderful in desserts, they shine just as brightly in savory dishes, like this tender focaccia with aromatic rosemary, perfect for nibbling with cocktails, or pairing with a main course. Get the recipe.

Roast Chicken with Meyer Lemons and Potatoes

Roast Chicken with Meyer Lemons and Potatoes

Martha Stewart

A simply roasted chicken is a gorgeous thing, and all the better if it’s surrounded with juice-soaked potatoes and caramelized Meyer lemons (which you can cut up and eat along with the other morsels of meat and potatoes). This dish comes from Martha Stewart, who is often credited with popularizing Meyer lemons in America, for which we thank her. Get the recipe.

Preserved Lemons

Preserved Lemons

Daring Gourmet

Preserved lemons, a staple of Moroccan and Middle Eastern kitchens, are a great addition to your pantry too, and ultra easy to make. Meyer lemons are preferred, but you can use regular lemons in the same way too; here, they’re simply scored, packed in salt, and left to sit for a while. When you’re ready to use them, gently rinse off the salt and chop the peel. They add lovely lemon brightness to countless dishes, including salads, rice, pasta, and desserts, not to mention traditional tagines and the like. Get the recipe.

Smoked Salmon Hash with Lemon-Parsley Vinaigrette

Smoked Salmon Hash with Lemon-Parsley Vinaigrette

Chowhound

The acidic zing of conventional lemons is a perfect counterpoint to rich smoked salmon and Yukon Gold potatoes, with black pepper and fresh parsley adding even more punch. Get our Smoked Salmon Hash with Lemon-Parsley Vinaigrette recipe.

Avgolemono (Greek Lemon Chicken Soup)

Avgolemono (Greek Lemon Chicken Soup)

Baking the Goods

This classic Greek soup relies on eggs for creaminess and fresh lemon juice to make it as bright as the Aegean coast. Tender chicken and orzo make it a full meal. Get the recipe.

Seared Scallops with Lemon and Vodka

Seared Scallops with Lemon and Vodka

Chowhound

Lemon is an old friend to fish and seafood of all sorts; here, the juice and zest cuts through the richness of golden-seared scallops and pasta and perks up the vodka-based sauce, while a dab of heavy cream smooths it all out. Get our Seared Scallops with Lemon and Vodka recipe.

Lemon Curd

Lemon Curd

Chowhound

Tangy, creamy lemon curd is like a little pot of sunshine. Spread it liberally on pancakes, toast, or scones, or use it to fill tarts and cakes, and pair it with plenty of berries. Get our Lemon Curd recipe.

Shortbread Lemon Bars

Shortbread Lemon Bars

Chowhound

Old-fashioned lemon bars never go out of style. You can certainly make them with Meyer lemons in season (and those are particularly great for making whole lemon bars, in which you include the peel), but there’s real harmony between the electric lemon topping and sweet shortbread base of the standard version. You can always dust them with powdered sugar to soften that sweet sting a bit more if need be. Get our Shortbread Lemon Bars recipe.

Man Charged With Threatening to Kill Ajit Pai’s Family

A California man was charged Friday with threatening to kill the family of Ajit Pai, the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission, over the repeal of net neutrality rules, the Justice Department said.

The man, Markara Man of Norwalk, is accused of sending three emails to Mr. Pai that included the death threats as well as a photo of the family. In one email, Mr. Man referenced three locations of the town where the Pai family lives.

Mr. Man, according to the F.B.I., sent the emails on Dec. 19 and 20 last year. Agents confronted Mr. Man at his home in Norwalk in May and he admitted sending the emails because he was “angry” about the repeal of net neutrality regulations and sought to intimidate Mr. Pai, the F.B.I. said.

The arrests come after a swell of consumer protests over Mr. Pai’s decision last November to roll back rules meant to protect the equal treatment of content online, a policy often called net neutrality. F.C.C. officials have said Mr. Pai received multiple death threats against him and his family over many months.

Mr. Man is being charged with threatening to murder a member of the immediate family of a United States official with the intent to intimidate or interfere with that official’s ability to perform his duties. If convicted, Mr. Man faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison.

An F.C.C. spokeswoman said the agency does not comment on law enforcement matters.

Josh Homme Shares Letter Anthony Bourdain Wrote to Daughter

Josh Homme has shared a letter Anthony Bourdain wrote to the Queens of the Stone Age frontman"s daughter Camille that encapsulates the friendship between the rocker and the late chef.

"Tony, I miss you bad. Once Camille was so mad at you. She was defending me. & So were you. Defending me. As we had done & would do many times over the years for each other. & you, with great care, such empathy, such sweetness… you apologized to a little girl who was defending her daddy," Homme wrote of the letter, noting to Bourdain"s own daughter, "Ariane, this was your father."

In Bourdain"s letter, he apologized to Camille for smashing one of Homme"s guitars during a promo for the Parts Unknown episode that Bourdain filmed with Homme in the California High Desert.

"You saw me take Daddy"s guitar and smash it against a tree and I"m sure that was upsetting," Bourdain wrote, explaining that the promo was a "not so subtle" ode to a similar scene in National Lampoon"s Animal House where John Belushi"s character destroys an acoustic guitar.

"Know that that was in fact not really Daddy"s guitar, and that we were both just playing around," he continued. "Daddy would have been very angry were I to do such a thing – and as he is a large man, I would not still be here to write this letter. I like your Daddy very much. We are friends."

As evidence of their close friendship, Bourdain colorfully reminisced about an incident at the bar Pappy & Harriet"s were a "superfan" accosted Homme, who "guided him by the thorax" to a security guard.

"I would have broken my beer glass across the man"s skull and then jabbed the remnants into his ****ing neck. That"s the kind of guy I am," Bourdain wrote. "I had your Daddy"s back – just like he had mine."

Bourdain closed out the letter by praising the "completely brilliant" Homme, stating that the rocker never got drunk during filming despite the frequent tequila drinking and asking what Homme cooks for her at home.

Following Bourdain"s death by suicide on June 8th, Homme paid tribute to his friend both on social media and onstage, with Queens of the Stone Age dedicating "Long Slow Goodbye" to his "brother" Tony.

Want to know when your meat is spoiled? There’s a gadget for that — RT World News

You no longer need to sniff the meat that’s been languishing in your fridge for days to make sure it’s safe to eat. A wireless device can now do it for you and send all the information you need directly to your smartphone.

A group of scientists from the University of Texas at Austin and China’s Nanjing University created ‘nano-structured’ polymer-based gas sensors capable of detecting biogenic amines – the substances which give decomposing meat a bad smell. The verdict is then sent to the user’s smartphone.

Researchers placed the devices near pieces of meat stored for 24 hours at 30 degrees Celsius, claiming their tests proved to be successful.

“Traditionally, many consumers just smell a food to detect spoilage, but this technique is only as reliable as the sniffer’s nose,” says Nano Letters, a peer-reviewed journal of American Chemical Society, which published the study on the rotten food-detecting device on Wednesday.

The invention can prevent food poisoning and foodborne diseases, including fatal cases. It is also expected to help shop employees and consumers at home to check the quality of food.

Some 48 million people in the US get sick from foodborne diseases every year, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Description:

From: John Rowley, Personal Trainer

What"s interesting is medical science has proved normal aging actually causes these tiny internal clocks to speed up12. Once you hit a certain age, THEY ACCELERATE. You"re actually getting older faster and faster, day by day and month by month.

You"ve probably experienced this yourself at some point.

As you get older, you may have noticed...

"What the heck is going on?" you may ask yourself.

Could be. Could be, even if you think you"re doing everything right.

Left unchecked, this is what we all can anticipate.

Hi my name"s John Rowley.  Perhaps you"ve heard of me.

I"m a celebrity nutrition, personal trainer and fitness expert, best selling author and popular TV personality.

They call me "old school" for good reason.

Mine was the Brooklyn-based gym that gained international fame and attention when it was featured in the movie Pumping Iron, featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger and Lou Ferrigno back in the 80"s.

So when it comes to knowing what it takes to sculpt lean, strong bodies, let"s just say I know what I"m talking about.

However, to be totally candid with you, I haven"t been totally healthy, I haven"t been totally fit throughout my career.

Nowhere near. I made a crucial mistake... one you can learn from today.

Assuming you learn from my mistake, I can promise you...

Let"s be clear, today I have all those things and more. And I want you to have them, too.

If you"ve ever wondered how ageless movie stars and celebrities such as...

...are able to stay so vibrant and youthful, defying the laws of aging, then read on.

You"re about to discover the secrets ONLY A SELECT FEW in the fitness community know.

My story is pretty simple. I"ve been involved with health, fitness and nutrition all my adult life.

I"ve coached and trained people you would know very well, including other popular Internet personal trainers.

However, and it"s a BIG however.

There was a time... ok, I admit it... when I was overweight. Fat. Call it whatever you want, but let"s just say I was not in the best of shape.

And for the life of me, I couldn"t figure it out.

I mean, I was 40 at the time and I had an inner tube around me that wouldn"t budge. No matter what I did.

As a celebrity fitness trainer, it was incredibly embarrassing. I tried everything to reverse the process.

Searching for answers, I started poring over medical journals. Fortunately, I tripped over a major gem of an insight in one journal called Metabolism.

It discussed in precise scientific detail HOW a person"s metabolism naturally slows down at the age of 3515.

I can"t tell you how many times I read that article—because it contained the secrets I"m about to share with you.

Now for you to appreciate what I am about to reveal, you should understand what your metabolism is and what it does.

Most people don"t understand metabolism. It"s ok, I didn"t either, until I went on my quest to solve my problem.

So for you to get the greatest benefit out of what I have to share with you next, you need to understand what metabolism is.

Your body"s energy is created in little cellular power plants called mitochondria.

This energy, called ATP, is used for all sorts of functions in your body. Everything from muscle activation to thinking to healing.

Now, when you"re a child, your body is bursting with mitochondria. I"m sure you"ve been amazed at kids" energy. They"re bouncing off the walls, aren"t they?

Yet here"s what happened to me and it"s probably why you"re looking for answers as well.

Sometime in your mid-thirties your body goes through a change. A shift. Your metabolism starts slowing down.

Your body starts producing LESS ENERGY.

You"re biologically getting older. (But as you"ll discover, you don"t have to look it.) There are 3 reasons…

1You"re not creating new mitochondria efficiently…

2They"re not generating as much energy as they used to...

3Your mitochondria actually start dying off quicker...

That makes living difficult for your body. A struggle. (Now you know why you may be tired all the time.)

Don"t worry. It"s NOT your fault, but there IS something you can do about it...

Now, here"s what was happening to me. I was exercising like I did in my twenties.

You have to understand, I was crushing it in my 20"s and well into my 30"s. However...

As I hit my late 30s, I started to gain weight. Not a lot at first, just enough to notice. I started getting what I call "thicker."

I also started to get tired much more easily.

Nothing at first. I figured it was just a phase my body was going through. Thought I"d snap out of it if I kept training as I was used to.

Then one day, I looked in the mirror and it was clear to me.

As I stared at my belly, I got pi**ed off. "Now things are getting out of hand." I thought to myself.

So what did I do? I trained harder and harder. And longer and longer.

More and more crunches. Something"s gotta give. Right....?

Now when I looked in the mirror I was thinking...

You need to know I"m embarrassed writing that. But it"s true.

I was dead tired most of the time. Instead of building lean muscle like I used to, I looked big and FAT... and sweaty.

"Portly" is the word they use. ("Fatass" is the word I used when I looked the mirror.)

I was stumped. It was a mystery to me...

Work out and you get fat. Don"t work out and you get even fatter.

For a while I thought I had some sort of disease. I thought I had some sort of thyroid or liver condition. I had all sorts of tests done. Read all sorts of medical journals.

I was a maniac on a mission.

At that point in my journey, three things became crystal clear:

I believe (and my later results validated) my metabolism... my mitochondria held the key to looking and feeling like I had in my 20s.

And as you"ll soon discover, they hold the keys for you, too.

Amazingly, inside each of our mitochondria are little clocks that can be speeded up… and even slowed down!12

Now here"s what"s fascinating...

Do you know the most effective way to
adjust your internal clocks in your mitochondria?

There are lots of ways actually, like caffeine and other stimulants.  Even prescribed drugs can speed up your thyroid.

But the most effective and ultimately, healthy way?

Answer: Amazingly, WORKING OUT is absolutely the fastest, most effective way to controlling your body"s internal clocks.

Working out is the key to slowing aging as well as combatting all the maladies of middle age—BUT you have to do it right.

NOT working out like you did in your 20s and early 30s.

If you work out like that? You"ll do what I did: "get thicker." Plus eventually you"ll add tons of extra "padding" on your belly, butt and thighs.

Maybe you"ve already experienced this.

Their once intimidating muscle has been replaced with flab. They don"t know how to work out—even though they may be spending hours a week in the gym! They"re still working out like they were 21!

Instead, what you need is to train with a focus on adjusting your internal clocks THE RIGHT WAY.

Trust me, it may not make sense right now, but it will.

When you do it right, you"re focusing on the cause (your mitochondria and energy production) and NOT the symptom (your fat.)

I started testing and experimenting. A man on a mission. Newfound drive and ambition.

I was committed to coming up with an all-around "recipe" for getting your body and your youth back. One anybody over 35 could use .

I was a sponge for all things related to controlling your metabolism.

I kept eating diaries, I kept workout logs. I kept adjusting, measuring and documenting.

Packed full of short, snappy little body hacks you can put to work in JUST MINUTES each week.

Old School Body Hacks™  pours everything I"ve learned about burning fat, boosting energy and slowing aging from a life spent training and coaching celebrities and regular, hard working people just like you.

It is really the foundational concepts that should be the focus and John has captured this in an easy to follow way."
