Tech Executives Are Testifying on Capitol Hill About Russian Election Interference

But Colin Stretch, Facebook’s general counsel, hemmed, saying the rejection of a foreign currency for political ad placements wouldn’t solve the problem of foreign interference.

“The reason I’m hesitating on foreign currency is it’s relatively easy for bad actors to switch currencies,” Mr. Stretch said. “So it’s a signal but not enough.”

That response didn’t satisfy Mr. Franken, who interrupted with exasperation.

“My goal is for you to think through this stuff a little bit better,” Mr. Franken said, raising his voice.

Republicans try to change the subject.

When his turn came for questioning, Senator Ted Cruz, a staunch conservative from Texas, pushed the conversation toward a very different concern: Tech companies putting a “thumb on the scale” in the country’s political debate.

Mr. Cruz ticked through studies and examples suggesting a left-leaning bias on the platforms, but he began with one that was personal. A study of how Google served stories about political candidates, he said, showed that users searching for Democrats were more likely to see positive stories than those searching for Republicans, including Mr. Cruz.

“The prospect of Silicon Valley companies actively censoring speech, or the news content, is troubling to anyone who cares about a democratic process with a robust first amendment,” Mr. Cruz said.

The executives assured Mr. Cruz that they were taking steps to train employees to counteract any distortion of the political discourse online.

“Free expression and free speech are at the core of the Twitter mission and we do everything we can do enable that,” Mr. Edgett said.

Russia had no favorite candidate, Republicans wrongly claim.

Republicans lawmakers stressed that Russian agents did not favor a particular presidential candidate in last year’s election.

“Russia does not have loyalty to a political party in the United States,” said Senator Charles E. Grassley, the Republican chairman of the Judiciary Committee. “Their goal is to divide us and discredit our democracy.”

But American intelligence agencies have concluded that President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia tried to sway the election in favor of President Trump, beyond just posting disruptive content on social media. Russian operatives also hacked Democratic email accounts and released messages embarrassing to Hillary Clinton’s campaign.

Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina and chairman of the subcommittee, asked Facebook to confirm a narrower point — that the pattern of activity it saw from Russia was more focused on sowing chaos in the United States than in bolstering Mr. Trump’s candidacy.

“During the election, they were trying to create discord between Americans, most of it directed against Clinton,” Mr. Graham said, addressing Facebook’s general counsel, Colin Stretch. “After the election, you saw Russian-tied groups and organizations trying to undermine President Trump’s legitimacy. Is that what you saw on Facebook?”

Mr. Stretch agreed.

Google tries to distance itself from Facebook and Twitter.

In his opening remarks, Richard Salgado, Google’s senior counsel of law enforcement and information security, walked a tightrope. He said that the company was taking the threat of government-backed interference seriously, but noted that Google’s array of services functioned differently than its social media peers, Facebook and Twitter.

He said while Russian agents used YouTube, owned by Google, to upload political videos, it gained momentum because of social media platforms.

“We did observe that links to these videos were frequently posted to other social media platforms,” he said. “We believe that the relatively limited amount of activity we found is a result of the safeguards we had in place in advance of the election.” He added, “Google’s products also don’t lend themselves to the kind of targeting or viral dissemination these actors seem to prefer.”

The distinction is one that Google has made privately, and it is more an accident of history — because Google’s social media efforts have largely failed — than an intentional strategy by the company.

— Daisuke Wakabayashi

Where did the ads go?

After some prodding from Senator Dianne Feinstein, Democrat of California, Mr. Stretch shed more light on some of the ways the Kremlin-linked Internet Research Agency used Facebook to target Americans.

For one, Mr. Stretch said about 75 percent of the 80,000 ads were targeted broadly at Americans as a whole. The goal, he noted, was largely to “sow discord and divisiveness” among Americans.

But importantly, some 25 percent of the ads were targeted specifically to certain states and parts of the country. What is unclear — and what Facebook has yet to detail — is how many of those ads were targeted specifically to swing states in the run-up to the election.

The tech company representatives talked at length about what they were doing to change how advertising worked on their sites. Facebook is testing a new type of transparency tool and database that will allow people to see who bought the ads they’re seeing. Facebook also said it was doubling its team that worked to remove objectionable content, to 20,000 employees from 10,000. Twitter banned RT, the Russian media arm, and is investing heavily in its Trust and Safety team.

— Mike Isaac

The problem was worse than reported.

Facebook, Twitter and Google have been slow to acknowledge their significance in the Russian influence campaign. Right after the election, Facebook’s chief executive, Mark Zuckerberg, scoffed at the idea that fake news on the site could have swayed public opinion before the election.

It took months for the companies to begin their own investigations. In late September, Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said that information provided by Twitter and Facebook seemed to greatly underplay their problems.

On Monday, the companies acknowledged the problem was much bigger.

In prepared remarks, Facebook said inflammatory posts by Russian agents intending to sow discord among Americans reached 126 million users. Google said that the same agents, from the Internet Research Agency, uploaded over 1,000 videos on YouTube. Twitter said they published more 131,000 messages on Twitter.

And the companies also acknowledged they were wading into new territory.

“The abuse of our platform by sophisticated foreign actors to attempt state-sponsored manipulation of elections is a new challenge for us — and one that we are determined to meet,” Twitter’s acting general counsel, Sean Edgett, said in written testimony.

Mr. Stretch said in written testimony, “The foreign interference we saw is reprehensible and outrageous and opened a new battleground for our company, our industry, and our society.”

The companies stressed that over all, content connected to the Russian company was a sliver of all that they publish each day.

But the new information will only raise more questions: How long did they know of the activity? How far back have they investigated the activity of these accounts? Beyond the Internet Research Agency, were there similar efforts by other foreign-linked companies?

Lawmakers want more tech regulations.

The political winds have shifted for Silicon Valley, with a growing number of legislators sounding alarms in recent months over the power that Facebook, Google and Twitter have over public opinion.

Some lawmakers are now proposing to rein them in by regulating political ads on their digital platforms. After Facebook disclosed in September that it had identified more than $100,000 in advertisements paid for by the Internet Research Agency, lawmakers proposed legislation that would ask websites to submit to the same sort of disclosures rules imposed on broadcast television.

Senator Sheldon Whitehouse, Democrat of Rhode Island, called for the companies to explain what efforts they were making to ensure the same mistakes were not repeated.

“Can you come to us and say, ‘We have accomplished X, and therefore you, as a Congress, don’t need to worry about legislating in this space or creating regulations or holding more hearings, because we have now got America’s back?’ Can you do that for me?” he asked.

Senator Amy Klobuchar, Democrat of Minnesota, was also expected to make a strong push for a bill that required sites like Facebook and YouTube to disclose the sources of funding for political ads. She recently introduced the legislation with Senator John McCain, Republican of Arizona, and Mr. Warner.

Ahead of the hearing, Facebook and Twitter announced they would voluntarily disclose the sources of funding behind political ads. Twitter went further to ban ads from two Kremlin-backed news outlets as well as vowing to disclose the source of funding for all ads.

But lawmakers say self-regulations won’t cut it.

“If their policies comply with our bill, they should support our bill and maybe can use their policy as a standard when we pass our bill,” Ms. Klobuchar said in a recent interview.

— Cecilia Kang

It’s not just about ads.

Political ads are just part of the problem. Russian agents also spread nonpaid content through the creation of pages on Facebook dedicated to hot-button issues like race. On Twitter, the Internet Research Agency used automatic messaging tools known as bots that could quickly spread tweets through multiple accounts.

Lawmakers are pressing the companies on what they’ve done to to fight misinformation on “organic posts” and bots.

“They’re using our own social networks, our friendships, families and biases and viewpoints against us,” Mr. Whitehouse said.

Another problem is issues-oriented ads that are not defined as political ads because they do not directly promote a political candidate. Such ads would include an environmental group publishing an ad attacking environmental deregulation or anti-immigration groups calling for stricter border policies.

“I have a particular concern about issue advertisements, sock puppets, and the dissemination of made-up stories, tactics we know Russia and other actors have used extensively,” Senator Ron Wyden, Democrat of Oregon, said in a statement before a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing on Wednesday with the same executives from Facebook, Google and Twitter. The House Intelligence Committee also has a hearing scheduled.

— Cecilia Kang

Republicans are pressing tech companies, too.

Republican lawmakers are also beginning to criticize the Silicon Valley companies. This is important because any call for regulations by Republican lawmakers, who tend to be free-market-oriented, make the long-shot risk of tech legislation more plausible.

In one contentious exchange, Senator John Kennedy, Republican of Louisiana, pressed Mr. Stretch on whether Facebook could possibly have oversight of all of its advertisers.

“I’m trying to get us down from la la land here,” Mr. Kennedy said. “The truth of the matter is, you have five million advertisers that change every month. Every minute. Probably every second. You don’t have the ability to know who every one of those advertisers is, do you?”

Mr. Stretch acknowledged Mr. Kennedy’s point.

Singapore Airlines Is Now Serving Even Better Champagne In First Class

As far as I’m concerned, Singapore Airlines has the single best champagne selection of any airline in first class. On longhaul flights in both first class and Suites Class, Singapore Airlines offers both Dom Perignon and Krug. While they’re not the only airline to serve Dom Perignon or Krug in first class, they are the only airline to serve both Dom Perignon and Krug.

Both are fantastic, and there’s something especially enjoyable about doing a side-by-side taste tests of these two top notch champagnes. I didn’t think Singapore Airlines’ champagne selection could get much better, though they’ve one-upped themselves, at least for a limited time. FlyerTalk member SMK77 notes that Singapore Airlines is serving 2004 Krug for a limited time. While the 2004 Krug is a promotion, they’re continuing to serve Dom Perignon as before, so this isn’t coming at the expense of anything.

While I’ve had Krug plenty of time, I’ve never had the 2004 vintage, though I’ve heard great things. For what it’s worth, 2004 Krug retails for ~300USD per bottle, which is about double the retail cost of the Krug Grand Cuvee that you’ll usually find on Singapore Airlines.

While price isn’t necessarily indicative of quality, this means Singapore’s top champagne is in a similar price range to what’s otherwise the most expensive inflight champagne. Specifically, I’m talking about the Salon 2002 Blanc de Blancs that’s served on Japan Airlines.

I’m flying Singapore Airlines in both January and March, so here’s to hoping the Krug 2004 is still around. Unfortunately I doubt it will be.

Has anyone had the chance to try 2004 Krug on Singapore Airlines? How was it?

Deutsche Bahn names high-speed train after Anne Frank, lands in hot water — RT World News

The German national railway provider has courted widespread controversy over its plan to name a new generation passenger train after the famous diarist Anne Frank. A Holocaust victim, Frank was taken to the Auschwitz extermination camp by train.

Critics say that the way the Deutsche Bahn (DB) has chosen to commemorate Frank is at least controversial and insensitive, given the story of the girl diarist’s life and death. Frank was arrested along with her family in Amsterdam, occupied by the Nazis at the time, and deported by train from the Netherlands to the infamous Auschwitz death camp in 1944. She died months later in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp in February or March 1945, aged just 15.

The unfortunate role which trains played in the fate of the world-famous Jewish teenager makes the naming distasteful and creates unnecessary parallels with Germany’s Nazi past, the Amsterdam-based Anne Frank foundation said in a statement.

“A combination of Anne Frank and a train conjures up the image of persecution of Jews and deportations during World War II,” it said, as cited by AFP.

“This association is painful for people who experienced the deportations and leads to new pain for people who have to live with the consequences of persecution,” the foundation noted, adding that it does not believe that the German railway company harbored ill motives when it came up with the idea.

“We also understand that initiatives like this are normally carried out with good intentions,” it said. DB for its part defended the move, saying that the company wanted to honor Frank’s memory by naming one their new ICE-4 trains after her.

Rejecting any speculation that it intended to deliberately harm the diarist’s legacy, the company said that “rather DB, conscious of its historical responsibility, decided to keep the name of Anne Frank alive.”

Responding to the barrage of criticism directed at it by customers, the Anne Frank foundation and Jewish organizations alike, the German railway issued a statement, saying that it “profusely apologizes if anybody’s feelings were hurt.”

It pledged to pay due attention to the concerns voiced by the public over its naming choice and “hold internal discussions, with the blessing of Jewish organizations.”

Anne Frank’s name was among some 19,000 suggestions sent to the DB in response to its appeal to the public for ideas. Among other candidates to grace the trains were former German Chancellor Conrad Adenauer, members of the White Rose resistance movement against the Nazi regime Hans and Sophie Scholl, and famous children’s writer and poet, Erich Kästner.

The new trains are expected to begin regular circulation from Hamburg to Munich and from Hamburg to Stuttgart in December.

In 2008 DB acknowledged the instrumental role its predecessor, Deutsche Reichsbahn, played in exterminating millions of Jews during the Holocaust, staging an exhibition titled “Special Trains to Death.”

“Without the Reichsbahn the industrial murder of millions of people would not have been possible,” Susanne Kill, DB’s own historian, admitted at the time, as cited by the Guardian.

How To Join Trusted House Sitters & Get Your First House Sitting Job

Trusted House Sitters is the #1 most used and trusted house sitting website online and we’ve personally used it to land amazing pet sitting jobs in Costa Rica, Grenada and Barbados. There are hundreds of new listings popping up every day and while you can view some of them, to see all of the new jobs and to be able to instantly contact the host and apply, you need to sign-up for the service.

The subscription only costs $119 / year currently. If $119 seems like a lot of money, keep in mind that you’ll be saving a ton of money on travel and accommodation costs. We reckon the service has saved us over $20,000 USD in the 3 years we used it.

So in this post I’m going to explain the steps of signing up for Trusted House Sitters, creating a compelling profile that will get you noticed and landing your first pet sitting / house sitting job!

Walking “Spare Dog” in Grenada during one of our pet sitting jobs

Why Trusted House Sitters?

We’ve tried out all of the major house sitting websites online today, and there’s a reason why more people choose to use TrustedHouseSitters.com. It’s the easiest to navigate website with the biggest network of home owners and house sitters. Period. There are more house sits available on Trusted House Sitters than there are on all other house sitting websites online today. Their customer service is great and it’s easier to find a job in the location you want using their service.

Before we get started, there are quite a few questions that people have before signing up and that’s totally natural. I’m pretty certain that signing up for this website is literally going to change your life, but how? Where will you find jobs? Do you get paid? Are there always free cars to use that come with the house? I’ll answer these and many other questions below:

Will I get paid to house sit?
Typically no, but we have been paid in the past. When you create your profile, you can check a box that says “Paid Jobs” to state to home owners that you’ll only accept jobs that pay.

Where can I house sit?
There are jobs in over 140 countries, from beach houses in the Caribbean to castles in France and vineyards in Italy, you’ll find it all listed on the site. We stayed in one home in the Caribbean with a beautiful pool overlooking the sea, and another one in Costa Rica that was set right in the rain forest!

Does use of a car always come with the house sit?
We’ve always had a vehicle in all of the house sits we’ve done, but not all jobs include them. In our experience, almost every home owner on the site will allow you to use their car as long as you have a license. This is because, in case of an emergency, they’ll want you to be able to take their pet to the vet, pick up supplies at the hardware store etc. You can also add into your profile that you’re only going to accept jobs with a vehicle (recommended).

Can families house sit?
Absolutely. While some jobs will request a single person or a couple, many jobs will love to have a family around as well.

What are my chances of actually getting a job?
Many people believe that because this sounds like such a perfect dream job for house / pet sitters, that there would be many more sitters than available homes, but that’s not the case! There are only 1.5 house sitters to every home available on the site, so your chances of landing the perfect job are actually very good. There are more homes on TrustedHouseSitters.com than on all other house sitting websites combined.

Why should I bother signing up?
You can only get full access to the enormous house sitting network on the website if you sign up. We signed up over 3 years ago and it was one of the best decisions we ever made. We were able to enjoy free accommodation for nearly 2 full years in total and we stayed in some of the most beautiful homes we could imagine. House sitting completely changed our lives and we can’t recommend it enough.

How To Sign-Up

Okay so you’re convinced… GOOD! Let’s get started with the process of signing up. To get started just click the button below. This will bring you to the first step of signing up over at TrustedHouseSitters.com.

After clicking that button you’ll be brought to a screen where you’ll be asked to enter your information and begin building your profile. You won’t be asked to pay until you’re done this process and the total will be $119.

house sitting websites

Simply enter in the information including your YEAR of birth (you don’t need your exact birthday here), and click “Create Account”.

After that you’ll be brought to the next screen where you can choose where you’re interested in pet sitting / house sitting. If you only want to pet sit domestically, then put in your home country, but if you want to house sit overseas I recommend clicking “Everywhere” because you never know what amazing homes may inspire you to visit a new country 😀 . When you’re done entering this info, click Save & Next.

Signing Up For The Best Websites For House Sitting

Now a new little box will appear above the Save & Next button that says “When would you like to sit?”. If you’re not sure, just click “Anytime” for now, or if you know you can also enter exact dates. When you’re done with this box, click “Save & Next” again.

house sitters wanted

Next the site will begin the basic parts of building your profile for you. It will ask you your sex, to write up a profile and add photos etc. At any time during this process, you can simply click “Skip to checkout” to complete the sign-up process. You can always create your profile later as well.

best house sitting

Next it will ask you if you’re male or female. Go ahead and tick a box and then enter your birthdate when prompted. You’ll then be prompted to enter in your town of residence. Start typing your city and then choose it from the drop down that appears. Click on your city and you’ll then be prompted to enter your occupation (this is all for the sake of your profile).

With each new thing you enter, you’ll be prompted to add more info. This is very useful information for homeowners so make sure you answer every question as accurately and descript as possible.

Next it will ask you if you’re house sitting as a single person or as a couple. Then if you have previous house sitting experience. If you say no, you’ll be brought to the next step, but if you say yes, it will prompt you to type in some details. Be very detailed here. Homeowners will be able to see this, so even if you’ve watched your relative’s dog for a few hours, add that in. Be honest and be thorough.

The site will then ask you what type of house sit you’re interested in – beach, urban, countryside or mountain. I recommend ticking all of these boxes because you never know what amazing places you’ll find.

The final question is if you’re house sitting with children. Click on an answer and then click the button that says “Save & Next”.

The next step is all about your previous experience with pets. Click the types of animals that you have experience with and be honest. You will likely get quite a few offers from homeowners, so you don’t want to clog your inbox with people wanting you to take care of their horses if you’ve never done so in the past.

Click the animal(s) that you’d be comfortable caring for and then click “Save and Next” again.

best pet sitting websites

Note: There is no opportunity to say “no pets” because most sits on the website includes taking care of an animal. But there are jobs available that are only house sits. If you don’t want to take care of any animals, type “NONE” under “any type”. Be aware that this will significantly limit your ability to find a job.

Next you’ll be prompted to enter in your profile write-up. This is all about you, your characteristics, your previous experiences and why you’re the best person for the job. The website says “Minimum 50 characters” but you should go all out here. The longer the better. Our profile is around 1,200 words and we’ve been told by countless home-owners that they love our profile write-up.

Now you’ll add the “heading” to your listing in the website. Your listing will show up amongst thousands of others so it’s important that you add important keywords to your headline so that you can stand out in the eyes of home owners as they scroll through the listings.

After you’ve entered a catchy title, click “Save & Next” it will prompt you to enter an intro to your profile (again, be descriptive here) and then it will ask you why you want to house sit. As most jobs include animals, it’s a good idea to rave about how much you love cats and dogs here, or whatever animals you can care for, also that you love travel and if you have experience with travel, list it here.

When you hit Save & Next after the final questions, you’ll be prompted to add photos to your profile. Of course, it’s a great idea to add photos of you with animals. Cuddling animals, playing with animals, petting animals, anything with animals. Also photos of you travelling if you have them. Most homeowners want to know that you’ll be confident travelling to and living in another country.

Avoid adding photos of yourself partying or being to crazy for obvious reasons.

To add photos to the site, either drag and drop them from folders in your computer, or click Upload Photo(s) to browse for them on your computer and upload them. After each one is done loading, you should add a description to tell the home owner who is in the photos and where they were taken.

After adding a few photos, you’ll also have the option to add a YouTube video. You don’t have to do this now, but I highly recommend you creating a video (with your phone or camera) and uploading it to YouTube. It will definitely help you get a job down the road.

After clicking “Save & Next” for the last time, you’ll be brought to the final stage of your profile creation. Here you can see what your profile will look like to homeowners. If there are any parts of the profile you’d like to edit or fix, you can click the pencil icon in that section to edit it.

To beef up your profile a little further down the road, make sure to create an intro video of yourself. It can simply be you sitting in a room and talking to your camera phone! It doesn’t have to be special, but it should show your personality.

You should also head into your local police station and get a police check printed out so that you can add it to your profile. It won’t cost you much and should take too long to retrieve, but it will help show homeowners that you’re not a thief…or worse.

Liquid Slide Tests

Liquid Slide Tests since november 2012. The idea is to film these with a proper camera and edit into new visuals.
The trial & error process concept of live liquid projection is all about making the slides on the spot. For me it"s a new addictive way of exploring and i"m intrigued by these energetic forms maqnified by optical lenses. Playing amongst the audience instead of on stage, an open process, dealing with chaotic chemical processes, the unpredictable outcome of the interaction between the fluids. Making each content surprisingly unique in it’s form. Inspired by the pioneers i’m creating formula’s and recipes which result in different organic forms. Filming samples since it is difficult to accomplish the same form again.

The Long, Strange History of People Filing Flying Saucer Patents

An articulated view of a Discopter in flight, floating through the night sky above the San Francisco Bay.
An articulated view of a Discopter in flight, floating through the night sky above the San Francisco Bay. With permission from discopter.com

A version of this post originally appeared on Tedium, a twice-weekly newsletter that hunts for the end of the long tail.

Early in the summer of 1947, an amateur pilot from Idaho named Kenneth Arnold spotted something in the Washington skies that kind of blew his mind.

Despite the skies being clear that day, he saw a series of nine flashes of horizontal light. He landed, told others what he saw, and his story spread through the popular consciousness, taking on a life on its own, as well as a name—the flying saucer.

Two weeks later, a much more famous incident in Roswell, New Mexico, involving a weather balloon (if you believe what the government tells you), further cemented the idea of the flying saucer in the public consciousness.

Not long after, hobbyists of all kinds suddenly felt inspired make their own—and they’ve been flooding the patent offices globally ever since.

But the guy who got to the U.S. Patent Office first, surprisingly, wasn’t actually inspired by the popular perception of the UFO at all. He had the idea, in fact, years before Kenneth Arnold took his fateful flight.

"They did not appear to me to whirl or spin but seemed in fixed position traveling as I have made drawing." From Arnold

The Dutch painter and sculpture artist Alexander Weygers, who grew up in the Dutch East Indies—now Indonesia—and spent most of his adult life in the U.S., was something of a 20th-century Leonardo da Vinci. He had both an engineering and artistic background, and his work spanned sculpture, illustrations, photography, and many other fields.

In 1927, he conceptualized a device that predicted the infatuation with flying saucers before they even had that name. And as an engineer, he did so with a practical eye toward the failings of the device he hoped to replace.

“Helicopters are vulnerable,” he said in an interview with UPI in 1985. “People were being killed in them during the 1920s. They go down like a brick. The saucer became the logical answer.”

His creativity was driven by tragedy. In 1928, his wife died during childbirth, as did his son. The painful incident ended up pushing him closer to art, with the losses inspiring some of his most notable sculptures.

A similar tragedy—the capture of his family, still in the Dutch East Indies, by Japanese forces during World War II—pushed him in the early 1940s to complete his saucer project, which he had first started in the 1920s. He called the device a “Discopter.”

The idea was inspired not by spaceships or science fiction, but by a practical desire to create a vehicle that could be used to rescue people in incidents not unlike the one that faced his family members. His frame of reference was his own prior work.

Weygers
Weygers’ patent for his Discopter. Google Patents/ US2377835A

He filed for a patent in 1944, and that patent was granted the next year. A key passage from that patent:

To a helicopter, a craft constructed on the principles of my invention bears a superficial resemblance in that both types are sustained by at least one horizontal rotor. From this point on, however, all similarity between the two types of flying craft ends. A craft embodying my invention is distinguished from a helicopter in that the rotor or rotors in my craft are enclosed within a substantially vertical tunnel, the rotor regarded as a whole is mainshaftless and the external form of the craft is not very different from the familiar discus of the athlete, in common with which the craft enjoys certain aerodynamic advantages characteristic of the passage of the discus thru the air. Not only the rotors and power plant compartments but all of the usual moving and fixed protruding parts, present in both airplanes and helicopters, such as stabilizing and directing means and otherwise, are entirely enclosed within the strikingly simple and cleanly streamlined contour line of the craft when regarded from exteriorly thereof in any elevation view, thereby concealing from the casual view such parts.

Alexander Weygers wasn’t trying to invent the flying saucer. He was trying to reinvent the helicopter, along with aviation in general, so that it could be used more practically. (It should be noted that the device was never built.)

But the existence of everything that came afterwards meant that his name would forever be associated with futurism and science fiction, elements that didn’t actually inspire his invention.

Weygers envisioned large passenger ships with windows all the way around the edge of the disc.

Soon after the flying saucer hit the public consciousness in the late 1940s, people noticed what Weygers had done. A 1950 article in the Allentown, Pennsylvania, Morning Call, dedicated column space to a dentist named Dr. Harold T. Frendt, who used the existence of the patent to argue against the existence of aliens. Frendt suggested that the patents were being used to create these saucers, despite his only evidence being Weygers’ patent.

“They should be operated at high altitudes instead of exposing them for observation to the general public and the pro-communistically inclined, and thereby stimulating a trend of foolish speculation,” Frendt told the newspaper at the time.

Frendt’s statement is ironic, because he’s also speculating. There probably was no flying saucer.

While Weygers was certainly first, the folks that followed him clearly were inspired by whatever happened in Washington and New Mexico back in 1947, perhaps with a little touch of H.G. Wells in the mix as well.

Reporting on Roswell.
Reporting on Roswell. Public Domain

As soon as there was a popular “spark,” the inspiration that had us looking up in the sky and wondering what if, the saucer was everywhere. It’s been keeping patent offices around the world busy ever since—first, with a spate of flying saucer toys in the early 1950s that looked like frisbees, and soon, in the form of aircraft clearly inspired by flying saucers, like this 1953 design and this helicopter/flying saucer hybrid.

Buried in the USPTO’s many classifications for airplanes and helicopters is the indexing code “B64C 39/001,” which represents “flying vehicles characterised by sustainment without aerodynamic lift, often flying disks having a UFO-shape.” Yes, USPTO got so many patent applications for flying saucers that it earned its own classification.

So how many flying saucer patents are we talking about? According to Google Patents, around 192 items in this specific classification are listed as being produced in the U.S., with three particular surges in their creation—an initial jump in the years between 1953 and 1956, a second wind between 1965 and 1971, and an unusually dramatic surge in such inventions between the years 2001 and 2004. USPTO handled 37 flying saucer-related patents during that particularly busy time in U.S. diplomatic history.

There’s a lot to look at, and it’s entirely possible that due to the complexity of the patent system, this doesn’t cover everything. Fortunately, someone with a pseudonym and apparently a large amount of time already did a huge amount of curation for you.

Earlier this year, an Internet Archive user named Superboy collected more than 100 flying saucer patent filings spanning the past 75 years or so. It took the user over three months to gather the documents from the U.S. patent offices and other patent offices globally, and is split up over two pages.

(Superboy helpfully noted that the documents prove “that humans have obtained and incorporated flying saucers for personal and secret use.”)

Some of the patents look like massive frisbees; others like tiny, squat planets; and others still look like they’ve taken clear inspiration from movies set in space. (And of course, Weygers’ groundbreaking craft made the list. It had to.)

Most patents were credited to individuals, with a handful of companies involved.

The patent document for this 2003 invention describes it as a “ring-shaped wing helicopter, which is similar to a flying saucer in appearance.”
The patent document for this 2003 invention describes it as a “ring-shaped wing helicopter, which is similar to a flying saucer in appearance.” Google Patents/ US 20030122033 A1

The weirdest such applications—though eventually withdrawn—came from a man named John Quincy St. Clair. People have been wondering about St. Clair for years. During the 2000s, he filed for for dozens of patents for all sorts of bizarre things. (It should be noted that filing for a patent isn’t cheap, even if it’s withdrawn.) Among his greatest hits: a “magnetic vortex wormhole generator” and a “walking through walls training system,” which comes complete with instructions on how to print the “training system” using a home printer.

One of his applications, from 2006, was for something called a “photon spacecraft.” “This invention is a spacecraft propulsion system that employs photon particles to generate a field of negative energy in order to produce lift on the hull,” he wrote.

Of course, not every flying saucer patent has been produced by a hobbyist, an eccentric inventor, or an engineer who turned tragedy into creativity.

San Francisco
San Francisco’s future, according to Weygers. With permission from discopter.com

Some of the largest companies in the world have occasionally taken interest in the flying saucer idea. In 2014, for example, Airbus invented a device that has a lot in common with the modern flying saucer, but also looks like a stealth fighter jet with a donut in the middle.

As CNBC reported at the time, it wasn’t intended for either outer space or the military—it was a reinvention of the passenger jet that was intended to help reduce cabin pressure. And there’s a good chance we’ll never even see it.

“It’s just one of many ideas,” a company spokesman told Fortune. “It doesn’t mean that we’re going to be working on making it a reality.”

That actually sounds somewhat sedated compared to an attempt by the British Rail to patent a spacecraft that relied on “controlled thermonuclear fusion reaction.”

And of course, the future may have room for a flying saucer—or at least a flying car—yet. As Bloomberg Businessweek reported last year, Google co-founder Larry Page has been investing in the idea of flying cars for years through his startups Zee.Aero and Kitty Hawk, with Weygers cited as an early inspiration for what could come next.

Earlier this year, Kitty Hawk released a video for a product that, if you squint hard enough, shares a lineage with what Weygers did way back when, with maybe inspiration from all the things that have come along since.
